The new Uncharted movie is a big step up for the lead, Tom Holland, and it has the potential to become his second big action franchise. Holland does not have much presence in other movies as of late, but the successes of Uncharted and other blockbusters prove Holland is on his way to becoming an action star in his own right. With the Uncharted post-credits scene promising further adventures with Holland's Nathan Drake and his partner in crime, Victor Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg), it seems that an Uncharted franchise is very likely.

Holland has his Spider-Man movies to thank as his claim to fame though he has appeared as the wall-crawler in multiple MCU movies, as well as the Homecoming trilogy. Outside of Holland's MCU and Spider-Man films, his box office repertoire consists mostly of critical and commercial failures. The British actor's film career began in 2012 with a few minor roles, nothing like the blockbusters he would later star in. His Spider-Man debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War excited MCU fans and was also marked by news of Holland's special Spider-Man audition. But Holland has struggled with replicating that success in his other acting ventures until now.

Uncharted's popularity with casual audiences and its basis in multiple video games give Tom Holland an opportunity to create his second big action franchise. Longtime action star Harrison Ford has appeared in four Star Wars movies and four, soon to be five, Indiana Jones movies. Another popular action star, Vin Diesel, is credited for five installments of the Fast & Furious franchise and both of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. So far, Uncharted is a success, costing $120 million to make and grossing $305.8 million at the box office. With the credits scene of the movie revealing Pilou Asbaek as the next film's antagonist, it is fair to say Holland and Sony are ready for more.

Tom Holland has had relatively poor box office performances outside of the MCU and Spider-Man. Onward wasn't a big box office hit for Pixar, with the numbers showing a loss of $60 million. Attempts at action and young adult movies like In The Heart Of The Sea, Cherry, and Chaos Walking also failed at the box office and have disappointing reviews. Ford and Diesel have made millions from their multiple franchises. Though some of their movies may not have braved the critics, they still performed well at the box office. Take Vin Diesel's F9, which scored rotten but earned $726.2 million on a $225 million budget. While Uncharted is not well-liked by critics, its financial success and respectable 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes shows why it could become Holland's second big action franchise.

The Uncharted games have always had a cinematic quality to them that has made them top-notch candidates for film adaptations. Seven different Uncharted games could mean at least seven installments for an Uncharted franchise. Tom Holland's similarities to Uncharted's Nathan Drake could help him become synonymous with the action movies audiences love, just as he is now as the MCU's Spider-Man. This is something Harrison Ford achieved as Han Solo and Indiana Jones, and Vin Diesel with Dominic Toretto and Xander Cage.

While many critics rate Uncharted in line with Holland's other movie flops, the fact that fans are still going to see Uncharted means Holland is on the same path as other action stars before him. Just as with Harrison Ford and Vin Diesel, Holland is sure to have a varied career. With an estimated net gross of $220 million so far, Uncharted's box office has beaten the awful reviews to become a success. Even if Uncharted doesn't become Holland's second big action franchise, Holland is sure to endure for audiences as Spider-Man. Though the burgeoning star has set his own limits on his Spider-Man career, he is still sure to reprise the role for years to come as his Spider-Man story continues to unfold.
