David O. Russell Wants Scarlett Johansson For ‘Uncharted’ Movie

Published 3 years ago by , Updated August 23rd, 2013 at 4:08 pm,

It seems most everybody wants Scarlett Johansson (keep reading…) to star in their next film, and David O. Russell is no exception. The Fighter filmmaker is in the midst of developing his Uncharted adaptation and has mentioned the blonde bombshell as being on his wish list to star.

Fans of the original PS3 title Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune have been vocal about their displeasure concerning Russell’s decision to cast Mark Wahlberg or deviate significantly from the game’s plot by adding a family dynamic. Bringing Miss Johansson onboard, however, is one move that’s unlikely to upset them too much.

Uncharted protagonist and treasure-plunderer Nathan Drake (Wahlberg) is accompanied on his adventures by the reporter/journalist Elena Fisher – the role Johansson would play. Miss Fisher is not only a match for Drake in terms of spirit and sheer gusto, but she is also (unrealistically?) capable in combat – and, of course, easy on the eyes. After watching Johansson disassemble a team of security guards with naught but her hands (and thighs) in Iron Man 2, one would be hard pressed to argue that she can’t handle a part like that.

Russell mentioned the Lost in Translation star as someone he’d like to see play Elena while chatting with Empire, and also cited his Fighter actress Amy Adams as another potential candidate – if he gets his way. On the topic of the Uncharted female lead, the offbeat auteur had this to mention as well:

“Ah, Elena. I’ve cultivated her quite a bit and I think I’ve added a lot of dimension to her so that’s all I’m going to say. I love the woman characters and the more robust they are, the more robust the movie … there’s [sic] a lot of greater [actresses] I think might suit. Hopefully, we’ll see how it works out with everybody who are being scoped to do that role…”

Could Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams reunite for ‘Uncharted’?

Johansson is currently busy filming Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo and has The Avengers to tackle soon thereafter, so her immediate availability is limited. The actress has long been rumored as a possibility to star in Lionsgate’s Regency-era splatterfest, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and may still be “loosely attached” to appear in another romance/undead mashup, Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament as well. So the chances that Russell will get her onboard for Uncharted are rather slim right now.

Someone like Adams would also be quite fun to watch play a rough n’ ready gal in the vein of Indiana Jones love interest Marion Ravenwood. The multiple Oscar-nominee shed her cutesy image with her foul-mouthed turn in The Fighter. Would other moviegoers like to see her work with Russell again ?

Wahlberg previously mentioned that Uncharted could begin shooting this summer, but Russell is reportedly also looking into making the comic book flick 2 Guns first. Stay tuned for more information in the near future.

  1. I want Russell away from this project. I want walberg away from this project and Scarlett is fine but I cant see her doing it anyway, not with her schedule.

    • Yeah I lost all interest in it when Whalberg’s name is mentioned…

  2. sigh…..anything she’s in I wanna see.*drools*

  3. The more I hear of this film, the less I want to see it. Russell seems like the complete wrong choice to be heading this project.

  4. We totally prefer Emily Rose as Elena — She does all her actions as well as her voice in the games — anyone else won’t have Elena’s feisty attitude and familiar personality.

  5. I would rather they cast Nolan North, Emily Rose and Richard Mcgonagle for the film. Then as each movie goer enters the theater, they are given mock PlayStation controllers that do absolutely nothing, just to give the people a sense of playing the game :p

  6. Casting is now the second biggest worry about this film. He’s already twisting the story. This is the biggest insult and adds to the lack of imagination of Russel. Why not worry about how to put the source material on film instead of how to wreck the story to make it presentable to the general audience?

  7. How about all of you go out and cast your own movie so the rest of us can tell you how horrible your choices are before the movie is even made. Some of you guys really need more to do.

    • Well this is screenRANT. And the character was modeled after a different actor.

    • Good advice Alpine. I’m putting in my two weeks notice and will become an A list director next month.

In all seriousness, people are expressing their displeasure with the casting choice on a public movie discussion website. Nothing wrong here. Russel, on the other hand, is a film director and his job is to make movies audiences will want and pay to see. Casting, story, etc. are all elements of it. In this particular case, he’s taking a big dump on what the audience really wants to see. That’s the reason for the backlash against this movie.

      • So true. I seriously want to know if he even remotely cares about fans at this stage. It’s not like this kind of uproar happens all the time. Only when the source material is so beloved and already has a clear idea of it’s character dynamic. We don’t need another Hollywoodized version of something people will already be disappointed in even before seeing a single frame. It seems like this story would’ve been helped by an unknown cast as an indie epic. Just call your movie something else please Mr. Russell!

    • Who new “Alpine” was an alias name for David O. Russell?

  8. Wahlberg has put me off this project big time

  9. Wahlberg is a good choice and Nathan Drake is modeled after Johnny Knoxville true story, Wahlberg has the fit and the hair to play Drake and Russell never leaked any scripts so we don’t know what the film plot is, Russell just expressed what was cool in his opinion but I bet he’ll respect the franchise and make the film similar but not the same as the game

    • FYI, Nathan Drake was modeled after Knoxville AND Indiana Jones. And David Russell is such a bad choice. As well as Mark Wahlberg. Get Nathan Fillion PLEASE!! The only thing I’ll say yes to is Scarlett.

  10. Ugh. Another franchise for Scarlett to ruin with her acting abilities? On top of all the old info I think this movie sound like it’s already needing a reboot upon arrival. =p

  11. I want Scarlett…just not as Elena :P If we can get her voice actor, Emily Rose, it would make up for Marky Mark.

does she not look exactly like Elena?

  12. Longtime PS3 gamers will remember that Uncharted launched with much fanfare about how the animation was founded on motion capture. The live actors themselves did the movements and action each game sequence required – creatively interacting with each other – while being filmed and recored just like a movie (except without the benefit of sets and costumes). The animated characters were then created using the LIVE acting as well as their voice work. That is why Uncharted is so very lifelike and detailed with all the nuances we love in the characters. The original actors should at least be considered for their own roles… and yes, Emily Rose and Claudia Black ARE hot! Check out this great behind the scenes interview:
