Uncharted Movie Gets Horrible Bosses Director Uncharted Movie Gets Horrible Bosses Director

The last time an Uncharted film adaptation – based on the popular video game property of the same name – was a serious possibility, David O. Russell was attached to write and direct, Mark Wahlberg was attached to star, and the plot of the film had little to do with the plots of the games.

Naturally, this caused a bit of an uproar with fans who wanted some fidelity to go with their video game movie jam. Since then, the adaptation has gone through different writers and directors, but we haven’t heard anything solid about it in nearly a year. For example: Who’s going to direct the film, considering Neil Burger (Divergent) dropped out some time ago?

According to Deadline, the new guy in charge is Seth Gordon, whose directing credits include Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief, the documentary King of Kong, and a whole bunch of sitcom TV episodes. Does his filmography – that of (primarily) a comedy director – indicate that we’re in for a much funnier version of Uncharted?

While the protagonist of the games, Nathan Drake, certainly loves to crack wise, the games themselves have never been laugh-out-loud hilarious. The tone is something of a mix between Indiana Jones and Die Hard, except less funny than the latter of those two films.

Considering Gordon has never made an action movie (or anything even remotely outside the comedy or documentary realms), one can assume they hired him for his proven success with movies intended to make people laugh. Should we therefore expect Uncharted: The Movie to be wall-to-wall gross-out jokes? Probably not.

Rather, it seems more likely that the film will be going the Iron Man route, where the main character is supposed to be hilarious even when the action and drama are intense.

Still, Gordon’s lack of action expertise might be a little worrisome to hardcore Uncharted fans. If there’s one thing an Uncharted movie should do well, it’s action. This is, after all, the video game version of Indiana Jones we’re talking about here.

We don’t know much about the plot of the film adaptation, but producer Avi Arad has said the following:

“I think ‘Uncharted’ will be very successful. It’s a father and son game. There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft, there are many countries in the world that realized they’re being robbed and they’re trying to recoup these important pieces. Now, the script has a lot of character [and] I think that has a shot at being the first one [to succeed].”

We’ll assume when he says “father and son game” he actually means “father figure.” (As in, Victor “Sully” Sullivan is a father figure to Nathan Drake.) After all, all that talk of family dynamic is what got the Academy Award-nominated David O. Russell in so much trouble in the first place.

What say you, Screen Ranters? Are you looking forward to an Uncharted movie directed by the guy behind Horrible Bosses? Drop us a line in the comments.

  1. It’s a bit odd they keep going after comedy people for the Uncharted movie. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg said they were approached for the movie ages ago also. Not very encouraging. Seth Gordon, at least, has some video game knowledge/experience with his Donkey Kong documentary. This can also be another case of Anthony and Joe Russo. Two comedy directors who MIGHT have just made one of the best Marvel movies yet.

    • Given from what we’ve seen from Cap: TWS, I think the Russo bros are already proving a lot of people wrong. They’ve directed some of my favorite Community episodes including the “A Fistfull of Paintballs”. They can do action just as well as they can do comedy but Cap appears to have a bit more of a serious/thriller overtone to it and it looks amazing.

  2. Not too sure whythey did a new script written, the game has a good enough story as it is. Maybe needs fleshing out a bit more with dialogue but thats it. If they follow the story of the games it will be awesome film if not, well don’t call it uncharted.

  3. As a big fan of the series I have no idea how to feel about this. Honestly they should not even bother adapting this into a film since all three games are very cinematic as it is.

But here is my obligatory cast:

Nate: Zachary Levi. Fillion would have of course been perfect but he’s gotten old and is nowhere near in shape as he used to be and that’s a problem considering it’s a very physical role.

Elena: Emily Rose. Who would really know the character better than the person who has voiced her for three games?

Sully: I could not decide between Bruce Campbell, J.K. Simmons and Jeff Bridges. I think all three of those would be quite acceptable.

Chloe: Always had my eyes on either Lena Headey or Olivia Wilde.

    • Spot on with casting

    • Personally I always saw Jensen Ackles as Drake. And Emilia Clarke as Chloe. Agree with Elena, and for Sully, Campbell all the way. Also Steve Valentine as Harry Flynn

    • I don’t agree with levi or Emily rose at all. Zachary Levi is way to feminine to play Nathan drake. You need someone with a little more edge and a cocky attitude. Also just cause you voice a character doesn’t mean that you can handle yourself on screen. They need someone who is an established actress like Charlize Theron. Tho id even accept that girl from the big bang theory.

      • I disagree with casting established actors just to sell a property, a lesser known B or C-list Hollywood can very well do a lot more justice to a character than a say expensive A-list actor. The name “Uncharted” alone will be able to sell tickets just from being a well known, critically acclaimed gaming series. From what I’ve seen on Chuck and the numerous interviews, Levi very much comes off as a cocky but charming kinda pretty boy, and that IMO is perfect for Nate. Emily Rose does just fine on Syfy’s Haven, her character(s) on that show are pretty similar in terms of attitude and demeanour as Elena is.

  4. Well this is going to suck.

  5. Colin Donnell for Nathan Drake

  6. Whatever happened to that inFamous movie?

  7. I’m excited for a uncharted movie. I’m on board with this guy till I see a trailer. Russo bros have already probed me wrong with there. Is ion this guy could be the same.

    Dream cast
    Colin donnel for Nate
    Hannah new for Elena
    Olivia Wilde for Chloe
    Jeff bridges for sully.

  8. LOVE the Bruce Campbell casting for Sully. That’s perfect. For Nate I actually like, speaking of Captain America, Chris Evans or even Chris Pine. For Elena, maybe Jennifer Lawrence. Navarro, Edgar Ramirez.

  9. Forgot, Jonathan Pryce as Gabriel Roman

  10. I think Zachary Levi should play Nathan Drake.

    • Chris Pine or Bradley Cooper would be great for Nathan Drake, and J.K. Simmons as Sully. Maybe Melanie Laurent or Diane Kruger as Chloe.

      • Elena*

  11. Jensen Ackles as Drake
    Emilia Clarke as Chloe
    Emily Rose as Elena
    Bruce Campbell as Sully
    Steve Valentine as Harry Flynn
If they use: Gabriel Roman – Alan Dale, Zoran Lazarevic – Mark Strong, Katherine Marlowe – Judy Dench/Helen Mirren, Talbot – Luke Evans, Charlie Cutter – Jason Statham, Jeff the photographer – Joel David Moore, Karl Schafer – Michael Caine/Malcolm Macdowell.

    • I would totally be on board for Jensen Ackles as Drake.

  12. I wonder how studios figure out who their going to pick to direct their movies. Why would they choose a director whos expertise is primarily comedy? Why not choose a director thats had some experience directing action/adventure films. Wouldnt that make sense?

  13. This doesn’t quite make sense. While I liked King of King, Horrible Bosses and even Identity Thief, none of them are anything like an Uncharted movie so he hasn’t proven himself in that regard. Sure, as the article said, there is some comedy in Uncharted, but it’s more of an adventure series not a comedy series.

The writers of National Treasure doing this is a little reassuring though, since that’s much more in line with what Uncharted is.

  14. Skeptical. I am a huge fan of the franchise and would love to see a good version on the big screen. That being said they could easily screw it up.

  15. At least with a comedy director you know they can focus on characters better and actually make an audience like them. Far too many action adventure movies with “meh” characters.

Personally I was thinking of Dylan McDermott for the role of Drake.

    • I can’t see him as Drake but I always thought he would make a great Joel for a live-action adaptation of The Last of Us.

  16. “It’s a father and son game.”

    Erm, no it friggin’ isn’t!

    • I mean, it depends what he means. Personally I’ve played every game with my dad there, he enjoys the story I enjoy playing, in that sense it. But if he means Sully/Drake then I’m worried for the movie.

  17. I think that James Roday from “Psych” would be an amazing Nathan Drake.

  18. My cast:

    Nathan Fillion – Jensen Ackles
    Elena Fisher – Kristen Bell
    Victor Sullivan – Kevin Kline
Gabriel Roman – Anthony Stewart Head
    Antoq Navarro – Benjamin Bratt
    Eddy Raja – Diego Luna
    Chloe Frazer – Kate Beckinsale
    Harry Flynn – Jude Law
    Zoran Lazarevic – Michael Fassbender
    Karl Schafer – Jonathan Pryce
    Lt. Draza – Jason Momoa
    Katherine Marlowe – Helen Mirren
    Talbot – Tom Hiddleston
    Charlie Cutter – Jason Statham
    Salim – Oded Fehr

  19. I don’t know much about video games but I do know a lot about movies. I’ve never played the Uncharted series but I have watched the storyline. I love the storyline. It better than a lot of movies I’ve seen. I think that the script for the game should be used for the film. Also hiring a comedic director to bring Nathan Drake to life is a mistake. This movie needs to be epic and I don’t believe that this guy is right for the project. It needs to stay true to the games and have a good cast. I think of Nathan Drake as a male Laura Croft. Tomb Raider was a great film. Angelina Joli looked like Laura and did an amazing job. The Uncharted film needs to be amazing like Tomb Raider was. I actually think that the ones who brought Tomb Raider to the big screen should also be the ones to do Uncharted. The only way that the movie will succeed is if it stays true to the game. The movie has to be based off the first game. I will be disappointed if the movie is not like the game.
