Uncharted Movie Director Neil Burger Uncharted Movie Has A New Writer & Director

For many fans of the Uncharted video game series from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Computer Entertainment, it was a relief to hear in May that directer David O. Russell would no longer be bringing us his strange adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune to the big screen with Mark Wahlberg starring as franchise protagonist, Nathan Drake.

Their plan for the film had little to do with the game, so why potentially tarnish that brand and use that character name for something unrelated? The fan outcry won in the end and now the Uncharted movie is back to square one. As of today however, the project has a new director and writer in Neil Burger.

Neil Burger doesn’t have a long list of filmography on his resume but he did write and direct three projects himself, including 2006′s The Illusionist with Edward Norton. He also made a splash earlier this summer, directing Bradley Cooper in Limitless.

According to Variety, Burger offered his own take on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune which producers Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner were impressed by so now, Sony/Columbia Pictures is moving ahead with that. We don’t know what Burger’s plan is or how it relates to the game series so we’ll have to wait and see if it’s “true to the source” or something a little different.

With Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception releasing this fall, exclusive to the PlayStation 3, Sony is serious about getting to work on expanding the franchise ASAP and we can expect the Uncharted movie to release in the summer of 2013.

The big question now becomes, who will star as Nathan Drake? We’re rather certain it won’t be Mark Wahlberg so will the studio go with someone bankable or someone younger and not yet on the A-List? There will no doubt be requests for fan-favorite Nathan Fillion as well so share your suggestions in the comments.

On another note, Avi Arad, the once-Marvel-CEO,  is clearly showing his push towards the video game movie genre. Along with acting as a producer on most upcoming Marvel Studios projects, he’s involved with adaptations of inFamous, Mass Effect and Lost Planet. Let’s hope he can usher in a shift of the tide towards quality adaptations like he helped do for comic book adaptations.

  1. Chris evans own this role wonder why nobody ever think of him

  2. I think the guy who does the mokap and voice acting for nathan drake should play him. It would be like having the real drake.

  3. While I was playing uncharted 2 the whole time I thought it should be a movie. I so thought that Bradley Cooper should be drake because he’s in a lot of action movies and kind of looks and sounds like him

  4. Has anyone seen the guy from the optimum online commercials? Perfect for the role of Drake…

  5. David Boreanaz is Drake! Not Nathan Fillion!

  6. I love Fillion, but he’s not believable as Nathan Drake. I would like to see someone who can deliver a quirky line as well as be believable doing some of the most amazing action scenes with the highest level of athleticism … Bradley Cooper has done comedy (Hangover) and just watch A-Team and you have all the evidence that he is capable of pulling off a kick-butt action movie.

  7. chris hemsworth should play nathan drake in the uncharted movie!!! when he has short brown hair he looks just like him

  8. Chris Hemsworth as he was in Ca$h would be perfect for Nate~!

  9. I’m really feeling Jason Stathem as Gabriel Roman. He’s the perfect bad guy. Nathan Drake is a complete mystery to me. Emily Rose for Elena

  10. I think Nolan North (The voice of Drake in the games) should play Nathan in the movie. In my opinion he even looks like Drake.

  11. I was talking to my sister about this, cause me and her both play both games over and over again. We love the storyline so much and the characters. We think a film would be a fantastic idea. I was talking to her about the characters, and we definitely agreed Jensen Ackles or Chris Evans would make a great Nathan Drake. And Jaimie King or Katie Cassidy would be an interesting part for Elena. And Liam Neeson for Sully and Jason Statham for Gabriel Roman, but we also thought Daniel Craig, even though young might do well. And possibly Timothy Olyphant for someone. We love the idea of Uncharted film. We love the story. Althought, the character that always made me laugh was Harry Flinn in Uncharted 2.

‘There’s a guy above you, there’s a guy above you. There’s a guy below you. There’s a guy below you.’

    ‘In like Flinn. Get it.’

He made me laugh all the time. I loved the second one. I can’t wait for the third. But definitely, Evans or Ackles.

  12. Bradley Cooper all the way!!!!!

  13. james roday is my #1 choice. I dk how anybody could see the episode of psych: The Greatest Adventure in the History of Basic Cable and not want him as Drake.

I would love bruce for sully

  14. it is clear that nathan fillian should play the part… look at some videos of him, he looks, sounds, and even acts almost exactly like nathan. His little remarks are just like nathan drakes to. It is a no brainer he should play him in the movie cmon people

  15. Nathan Fillion without a doubt!

  16. Definitely Bradley Cooper. Drake has the whole smart-a$$, hangover meets Indiana Jones thing going on and Bradley Cooper would nail it. If anyone of consequence is listening, please offer him the role!!!

    • And yeah Bradley Cooper is goood! But Fillions Face structure and features match with drake(except his nose)

  17. Seriously people? cmon… I know it’s starting to come off as a broken record, but nathan fillion would be PERFECT! bradley cooper just gives off too much of a suave (and, yes! even slightly sissy) impression. Nathan Fillion acts, looks, and sounds like a perfect fit. sarcasm to action, no one would be better.

  18. My top three choices for Drake would be Chris Evans, Jake Gyllenhaal or Jensen Ackles. Nathan Fillion and Mark Wahlberg are both too old.

  19. Fillon and Wahlberg are way too old and not that good for the role of Nathan Drake. Yes, Bradley Cooper is a good choice but really we could do better. I personally think that Chris Evans would be perfect. But if you could change his voice for this role I also think that David Chocarro is also a good choice because he just looks like Nathan Drake.

  20. I think either David Boreanaz to play Nathen Drake or the actual guy who done his voice and movements in the Game Nolan North. They both seem perfect for the parts, and just replaying the games and watching it’s awesomness I have to say that these two would be my top two choices.

  21. I think Bruce Campbell from Burn Notice has to be Sully, and maybe Chris Pine or Mike Vogel for Drake, although I’m really liking the Cooper idea.

  22. Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. The castle stars. Perfect!! Stana Katic just needs a dye lol. They look Great on castle and will surely look great in the movie!!

  23. I think that Nathan Drake should be played by Gerard Butler, Robert DeNero as Victor Sullivan, Jason Stathum as Chalie Cutter, Jennifer Anistan as Elena Fisher And Angelina Jolie as Chloe Frazer

  24. Why didnt I think of shia lebouf? Ok Gerard Butler or Shia LeBouf as Nathan Drake

  25. I think chris evans would be a good choice too.
For Drake ^^ he looks like him in a way and next to that he isnt too bad of a actor :D
But what is more important is to choose the right actor who actually has the looks and can perform drakes role well.
I noticed that fans now are pretty ticked off when these two things are not looked over carefully. Now we dont want to anger those fans right? :)
but I am looking forward to the movie. And hopefully it is has strong of a :) attention grabber just as the game itself was?
Well also Drake has many gestures so I hope they throw that in too.
D’: dont want to destroy his personality.
