‘Uncharted’ Movie Has A New Writer & Director

Uncharted Movie Director Neil Burger Uncharted Movie Has A New Writer & Director

For many fans of the Uncharted video game series from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Computer Entertainment, it was a relief to hear in May that directer David O. Russell would no longer be bringing us his strange adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune to the big screen with Mark Wahlberg starring as franchise protagonist, Nathan Drake.

Their plan for the film had little to do with the game, so why potentially tarnish that brand and use that character name for something unrelated? The fan outcry won in the end and now the Uncharted movie is back to square one. As of today however, the project has a new director and writer in Neil Burger.

Neil Burger doesn’t have a long list of filmography on his resume but he did write and direct three projects himself, including 2006′s The Illusionist with Edward Norton. He also made a splash earlier this summer, directing Bradley Cooper in Limitless.

According to Variety, Burger offered his own take on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune which producers Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner were impressed by so now, Sony/Columbia Pictures is moving ahead with that. We don’t know what Burger’s plan is or how it relates to the game series so we’ll have to wait and see if it’s “true to the source” or something a little different.

With Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception releasing this fall, exclusive to the PlayStation 3, Sony is serious about getting to work on expanding the franchise ASAP and we can expect the Uncharted movie to release in the summer of 2013.

The big question now becomes, who will star as Nathan Drake? We’re rather certain it won’t be Mark Wahlberg so will the studio go with someone bankable or someone younger and not yet on the A-List? There will no doubt be requests for fan-favorite Nathan Fillion as well so share your suggestions in the comments.

On another note, Avi Arad, the once-Marvel-CEO,  is clearly showing his push towards the video game movie genre. Along with acting as a producer on most upcoming Marvel Studios projects, he’s involved with adaptations of inFamous, Mass Effect and Lost Planet. Let’s hope he can usher in a shift of the tide towards quality adaptations like he helped do for comic book adaptations.

  1. I do think Nathan would be great for Drake…but just incase he isnt…why not the guy that was in that play live long PS commercial who played drake in the bar with all the other playstation characters?

    • he was a little chunky for drake though

  2. Personally I think Joe Flanagan! He looks like Nathan in the games. :) and he a good actor

    • from Stargate Atlantis

      • I completely agree that Joe Flanagan looks very similar to Drake, and his humor and the way he carried himself in Stargate Atlantis is perfect for Drake.

  3. Nathan Fillion has my vote. He has emotional depth and comic timing. He’d be perfect if they hold with the franchise story line.

  4. I think that the best person for Nathan Drake would be David Boreanaz. They look so much alike. He would be a perfect Drake.

    • My VOTE is for you KATLYN!!!

      • NOT ONLY DO THEY LOOK ALIKE BUT THEY ALSO ACT ALIKE WHEN COMPARING TO HIS CHARACTER AS BOOTH IN THE FOX’S TV SERIES BONES.

  5. What about Gerard butler, he’s great actor and looks like Marjan in the games

  6. Nathan Fillion all the way. I mean…they even have the same first name.

  7. Oh Come on! Nathan Drake would be perfectly played by Brad Pitt. Its a little cliche i know but he kinda does look like him and he’s got that sarcastic humor that Drake totally has. SO!!! It’s perfect. And Brad has done action!.

  8. NOLAN NORTH! geez the guy IS Nate!! and he’s dying to play the role. So what if he’s not an A-lister, thats actually a good thing! It doesnt make sense that they would go with anybody but him

  9. They are all a character fit for the role of Nate. Anyone liking Karl Urban? He’s the one with the (cute) hair according to Bruce Willis in RED.

  10. I think about Gerard Butler to play Nathan Drake

  11. Zach Baggins from Ghost Adventures would be perfect to play Drake!

  12. Joe Flanigan hands down. When I play the games I forget I’m not watching a digital Joe. He’s perfect for the part.

  13. I still think David Boreanaz would make a great Drake. When I played Uncharted for the very first time, I thought it actually WAS David Boreanaz! lol.

  14. I think that Brandon Routh would make a good drake he has the body and style for it hes young enough and i think that he would make the part perfect super stoked about this movies it’s like today’s Indiana Jones.

  15. Nathan Fillion’s the guy. If they go younger though, I agree with the Brandon Routh pick, he’s is an intriguing choice.

  16. it should be without question: bradley cooper. he has the ability to actually deliver the lines like nolan north and sully could be a made up russell crowe, robert redford, or even ed o neil.

  17. Im glad to hear that Mark Wahlberg will not be playing the role of Nathan Drake for the Uncharted movie, I mean don’t get me wrong, Mark Wahlberg is an awesome actor, I just don’t believe he is right for the part. A few days ago, I was going thru some actors facebook pages, and I had ran across an young/kinda of unknown actor, but only because this actors father was an International action star in the late 80′s and early 90′s. And I have seen him in a few movies recently. But his appearence in a picture that I noticed from his facebook page caught my eye and took me into the world of Uncharted! But the actors name is Kris Van Varenberg and I honestly think he resembles Nathan Drake to the T! His acting skills seem to be pretty great, which he has some few supporting roles in movies such as “Assassination Games (2011)” and “Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2010)” but was also had a few small part when he was a child in his father’s movies, which the two I just named was his fathers movies as well which everyone would know him as “Jean-Claude Van Damme”, I mean don’t get me wrong here, Van Damme hasn’t had much sucsess in a long time besides being casted in the next “The Expendables 2″ movie and doing a voice over in “Kung-Fu Panda 2″ but I have to give him some credit for his early movies such as “Bloodsport”, “Kickboxer” and “Timecop”. And if your looking for someone who is fresh, and not too many people know of him, Kris is your best bet for the role of Nathan Drake. In the picture that I saw of Kris, he had his back up againts an concrete wall, like he was hid behind holding a gun in one hand like he was getting ready to point and shoot, and he was wearing a gun holdster, plus in the background, was alot familiar to me as one of the maps in the Uncharted game. I had to play some Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception after I had saw the picture. But in this picture, it was so identical to Nathan Drake in Uncharted games, it was the first thing that I thought of when I first saw the picture, and after seeing Kris Van Varenberg in his latest roles in his most recent movies, I believe Kris would be an excellent choice for the role of Nathan Drake! and if there is any fans that are interested into seeing the picture, you can look me up on Facebook “Luke Griffith” or just look up Kris’s facebook fan page, “Kris Van Varenberg” or you can also find his page from his fathers fan page on facebook “Jean-Claude Van Damme” im sorry but i think Kris would be an awesome choice for Nathan Drake and I think he could nail it no problem. thats my opinion and suggestion

    • Hugh Jackman??? No…too big…too old. Not right.

  18. Actually if you are interested in seeing the picture that I found of Kris Van Varenberg and the reason why it made me think of Nathan Drake and Uncharted, here is a link to the picture. http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w408/stpilotsfan83/kris.jpg

  19. If you want Fillion, you might as well consider zach galifianakis for the role too. David Boreanaz is the most qualified, and looks the most like drake look here

    • I AGREE!!!!

  20. I totally think Matt Dallas would be a great Drake all he has to do is get a tan and more muscle because he already lookes a lot like drake in my opinion way more than David Boreanez

  21. James Roday!! end of story, don’t know him, watch Psych

  22. Bradley Cooper because he kinda has the same personality and voice Just fix him up a little.

  23. Nathatn Fillion, Joe Flanagin, Sean William Scott, Bradley Cooper,Sam Worthington,James McAvoy all good choices

  24. Nolan would be PERFECT for DRAKE !!!!!

  25. Hugh Jackman for sure

    • Hugh Jackman??? No…too big…too old. Not right.

  26. Nathan Fillion would be fine. I little to big and chunky and a little to old…but if any of you watch Cougar Town….there is an actor on there name Josh Hopkins. He has the same face….body structure. He would be perfect. Brent Spiner…(with a little voice modification) would be great as Sully too. He can slick his hair back and give it a touch of grey and can add a mustache. Somebody PLEASE cast this movie properly!!!

  27. I say if Nolan North wants to do it let him do it. its his movments his voice his acting in game its just perfect. Nathan Fillion with J.K. Simmons as sully and Traylor Howard as Ellena. the best part is Nathan and Traylor already have a on screen history wich worked very well.
