Two New I Am Legend Trailers: One Great, One Lame

It’s raining I Am Legend trailers today. There’s a new U.S. version and a new international trailer for the movie. While I liked the first U.S. trailer, this new on is IMHO pretty damned boring. On the other hand, the international trailer really makes me want to see the movie.

The film opens mid-December, stars Will Smith and seems to be a twist on the old Sci Fi movie The Omega Man which starred Charlton Heston. Smith plays the last man left on Earth after some sort of catastrophe wipes out everyone else. Of course he’s not really alone… eventually some rather creepy characters start showing up, no doubt mutated by whatever happened, and they look suspiciously like vampires to me.

I’m actually very interested in seeing this for a few reasons:

1. Sue me, but I’m a big fan of Will Smith.

2. The concept is interesting to me, and based on the first trailer it looks to be quite well done.

3. They’re releasing an IMAX version of the movie.

4. They’re attaching the first 5-7 minutes of The Dark Knight to the IMAX version of the film.

First we have the new U.S. version of the trailer, which up until about the last 5 seconds just about put me to sleep:

And then we have the new international trailer, which is much more appealing (sorry, couldn’t find a larger version of this one):

Maybe someone can explain to me why it is that international trailers for U.S. movies are consistently better than the the version they show in the States? I just don’t get it.

Oh, and here’s the poster in case you haven’t seen it:

Thanks to Filmstalker for the international version.

I Am Legend opens on December 14th.

I kinda like parts of both, going through Neville daily routine parts in the U.S. one. Plus, Clint Mansell’s score from The Fountain is used.

And the little things in the international, like Neville in the bathtub covering his ears and the desperation in his voice as he’s calling for his dog.

I’m a big fan of the original book, and I know that there will probably never be a faithful translation of it. But I’m still looking forward to this. As long as ther isn’t an “Awww hell no”, I’ll be happy.

I’m one of those ignorant folks completely unfamiliar with the story the film is based on, so I will be taking the film at face value.

BTW, your “Awww hell no” comment put a big smile on my face… good one. :-)

I agree with Mike V, I like how the international trailer shows his basic daily schedule then builds to the action. I’m also glad that Will Smith is playing the lead over Arnold ‘the governator’Schwarzenegger, Micheal Douglas, or Tom Cruise. Very much looking forward to this movie.

Same here, looks to be the goods. I also haven’t the book but after seeing the premise I might go look it up.

I like both of the trailers but I definitely like the international one better. The poster is pretty awesome too. Kinda reminds me of “War of the Worlds” but not too much. I was really hoping that Tom Cruise was NOT going to play the lead character in this film. So I was rather relieved when I saw Will Smith was going to be the star (big fan of the MIB movies).

“…seems to be a twist on the old Sci Fi movie The Omega Man which starred Charlton Heston”

Um, yes, it’s a remake. Or, to be more accurate, it’s another adaptation of the novel that Omega Man was based on, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. There was also a third film version starring Vincent Price, which I think was called The Last Man of Earth.

Just FYI.

Jason,

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I thought it was based on a different and more recent story.

The Vincent Price one was The Last Man on Earth. So you were just a smidgeon off Jason. Another great Vincent Price performance. Also it’s in the public domain!

I haven’t downloaded it as I have a DVD version, so can’t testify to the quality.

I’m looking forward to the Will Smith version as well. I haven’t watched The Omega Man yet, but anything with Charlton Heston is a must see to me.

Vincent Price, Chalton Heston and Will Smith versions. Is that the axis of awesome or trilogy of terrific or what?

“the axis of awesome”

Dude… I *like* that! :-)

Also, it’s worth to note I Am Legend was a big influence for Romero’s Night of the Living Dead.

The book is great I’d recommend it to anyone.

Yes this Will be good.
Not because of Smith but because of the way they can make the world look empty using CG.
A remake of Omega man is permitted by the Remake Gods!
^
28 days later remake or redux. I’m beginning to see where they got their inspiration?

This looks like the next blockbuster to me ???

Will Smith is usually good for some big box office.
