What did YOU think of the premiere: ‘Two And A Half Men’ Season 9 Premiere Review & Discussion
With the taping of the Two and Half Men season 9 premiere completed, details are beginning to leak out about the previously-rumored death of Charlie Sheen’s character, Charlie Harper – and they’re even more gruesome than originally thought.
In late July, it was reported that not only was Chuck Lorre set on killing off Harper from the series (to make sure that Sheen could never return), but that he was going to make the death, well, violent.
Originally, sources close to the series said that Lorre was set on having Harper drive off a cliff, but after the Two and a Half Men season 9 premiere taping, the real cause of death was revealed – and it’s much, much worse than a simple “cliff jump”:
Charlie is going to be murdered by being pushed in front of a subway car, and his body literally explodes from the impact.
According to those at the taping, here’s how Charlie Harper’s death happens:
- In the Two and a Half Men season 8 finale, Harper flew off to Paris with Rose – his neighbor/stalker.
- Harper and Rose got married (during the fictional summer), but the relationship took a turn for the worse when she found him with another woman in the shower.
- The day after catching Harper in the shower with another woman, they were waiting for the Paris subway when Harper “slipped” in front of a moving car where his body blew apart upon impact.
- It’s implied that Rose pushed Harper in front of the subway and got away with his murder.
Wait. Two and a Half Men is a comedic sitcom, right? How is murder, a graphic explanation of his death, and a funeral of the main character supposed to be funny? Or even humorous? Short answer: it’s not.
Not only will all of this “hilarious comedy” serve to present a deserving return to television, but then Ashton Kutcher must jump in as the “lonely internet billionaire” who buys Charlie’s house after the funeral.

When news first broke regarding Lorre’s intentions to kill Sheen, the fans of Two and a Half Men weren’t all too happy. Considering that news was only about driving off a cliff, one can rightly assume that their reaction to this will be much worse.
Fortunately, there’s at least one person that’s happy to hear about Charlie Harper exploding: Charlie Sheen.
Shortly after the news of his character’s death was revealed, Sheen told TMZ, “I am honored that it took something as large and violent as an oncoming train to terminate my character.” Quickly adding, “Anything less would have been an insult!”
While this type of news is more-or-less fun to pick apart – outside of any direct regards to the development of a television series that hundreds are employed by – when one thinks about the path that Lorre has decided to take, it’s hard not to be concerned. For all of the problems that Sheen caused (and he caused many), he always noted that his intentions were to do the best show he could – and from all counts, that’s exactly what Sheen did (no matter what state he was in).
With Sheen gone and Ashton Kutcher taking his place, it appears that Lorre has forgone any type of logical plot progression – especially on a comedic sitcom. Instead of focusing on how to make the best series with what he has left – which is extremely hard in its own right – Lorre is taking unneeded risks in order to provide himself with some type of passive aggressive relief.
At a certain point, one has to ask this question: Is Lorre hurting the series more now than Sheen ever was in the past?
I think some would say “yes.“

IT SUCKED, NOT FUNNY.
Just watched 2-1/2 men premiere with Ashton Kutcher. It was great and will continue to grow. Nothing against Charlie Sheen but within a few more episodes he’ll be a distant memory and viewers will be fully invested in Ashton and the new storyline. I wish Charlie the best but life goes on…
You and I must have watched a different episode. It was forced and it sucked. Nothing close to the past.
when was it on? or did u have a special viewing, if so when will it premier?
Just as many of you did, I watched the premiere episode of season 9 out of pure curiosity. I knew they were going to kill off Charlie but really now… this was not funny at all. Regardless of what you might think of Sheen, you have to admit that he did a superb job with Charlie Harper. He and Jon Cryer with the perfect duo, a bit like Bronson Pinchot and Mark-Linn Baker in ‘Perfect Strangers’. The chemistry was there. THEY WERE the show. Now for Alan to start dating and go on as if nothing happened…again that’s downright disrespectful. Charlie was his brother for God’s sake! Take a break to mourn him! That’s what I loved about the show, that even though the brothers were getting on each other’s nerves at times, they were there for one another when it got tough.
What truly disgusted me was the last scene where Ashton appears naked. The show did stretch the boundaries of decency at times but this takes the cake. Nop! Charlie Sheen, you can rest easy. You were a big part of the show and you will be deeply missed. This fan will properly mourn your loss.
I like Ashton but he’s NOT right for the show.. they should be bring Charlie back… He makes the show what it was and I’ll not be watching the new ones it’s not funny …

It wasn’t funny. Ashton does not have the comedic timing of Charlie. Bring Charlie back from the dead, or this may be the last time I watch Two and Half men, except for season 1-8 reruns.
I like really like Chuck Lorre’s shows and his writing but this first show was a complete failure…it was not funny and wow the anger… it feels forced and I don’t think he is going to turn it around, hope I am wrong. The show was Charlie’s character the rest was secundary and I think Charlie Sheen deserves another chance, we all do, …nothing against Ashton but these shoes are too big to fill..

Watched the show and didn’t really know what to think of it. There was a lot of attention paid to the pathos of Charlie and the usurpation of sexual prowess unto a newcomer with even more impressive talents and bigger wads. I don’t know if you can sustain it before it will inevitably blow up in our faces with not enough clever wordage to keep our attention other than to have ourselves laugh at how stupid we are for laughing at what would otherwise be dumb humor.
Why is my comment awaiting moderation? I now know that this blog is censored.
I was so disappointed tonight. The plot doesn’t have any substance. And kutcher seemed very stiff. Only the original actors were funny. Why didn’t kutcher show up as their 1/2 brother? I thought the premiere was going to be great with all of the marketing. The writers are lost without Charlie sheen. Very boring tonight!
Honestly, I don’t think it was as bad as everyone is posting. But, the death of Charlie was ridiculous. I mean, really? Ashton should be given a chance. I understand that Charlie is irreplaceable, and is extremely unique, and honestly if the show could go unchanged, I wish I wouldn’t have, but it did. Ashton wasn’t too bad, you have to remember, he is a completely different character from Charlie’s and either the show can sink now or it might just make it.
But it defiantly should be given a chance.
Was Lorre following the show???
What happened with Alan’s ponzie scheme?
Why didn’t Alan feel guilty for not warning his brother about Manny Quinn??? Rose is the guy’s stalker fer cryin’ out loud!!!!
For the record people, I wanted Charlie Harper to die from an STD like Jeff Goldblum did in The Fly. I also wanted his ashes flushed down the toilet. However, the writers thought it was a little much.
I wanted the entire cast to beat Charlie Harper to death with their shoes, but I had to settle for Rose shoving him off a platform.
I also wanted his head to get stuck in a wood chipper while an anaconda was eating him.
But alas, I’m not bitter.
I was wish Mr. Sheen the best of luck in his new career and may he rot in hell
Charlie Sheen made the show, without him it will fail. end of.
On the slight chance this is actually Chuck Lorre and not just some toss pot trying to be someone better…
Stop being an utter jerk about it. Give the viewers what they want! So what if you had your ‘artistic differences’ Happens all the time, man! If you hate him that much, offer him an insultingly low paycheck to come back, no matter how cheesy you make his come back, whether it be all a dream or some form of deception on roses and evelyns part, the viewers will mop it up if it means the return of their hero. If Sheen turns down the offer Then he looks a twat to all his fans. What was said, was said. He was on drugs and in a bad bad place, surely you can see round that for the good of the show. Oh yeah, and Ashton Kutchers character, NO! TERRIBLE! I can see the show becoming all about him while Alan runs around him, him stealing every partner Alan has and distracting Jake’s love interests. A role fit for a guest character, but the main character cannot be that well going! There needs to be bad things about it. A lot of the shows charm towards the end was Alan’s contribution as his life began to continuously come back together then fall apart, his life always falling apart would suck! And Charlie? Well he was a ladies man for sure, but he was withering, old, alcoholic, argued with everyone causing those around him to hate him, and for some reason, LOVEABLE! Who does that sound like? Oh yeah, CHARLIE SHEEN! His real life turn for the worse was very much fitting to his character and most would say, method acting! Please don’t ruin the last perfect show on TV. You still have a chance to fix it! I personally will not be a fan until the day Walden Schmidt is seen leaving the Harper house with his tail between his legs, the door being closed either by Charlie himself, or by Alan as an inebriated Charlie lay bumbling to himself on the sofa (Coach)! Thank you and goodbye! Thom Hill.
I honestly believe that Charlie’s little breakdown has been used to keep the show alive. Having already “jumped the shark” last season, something drastic had to happen. The brilliant use of Rose being the only witness, and a convenient explosion of the body precluded any way to see that Charlie was truly dead. I think it us very possible that Rose’s craziness and obsession with Charlie caused her to make people believe that Charlie is dead, but she is actually holding him somewhere in response to her jealousy and obsession over him. I think when the time is right, sweeps maybe, Charlie will start to show up again. People might think it is his ghost, but it is actually Charlie attempting to escape from crazy Rose. There was nothing in the very deliberate writing of the first episode that made anything about Charlie’s supposed death absolute or 100% convincing. Rose was not upset enough, and her story was not convincing. I think Charlie is not dead, just temporarily suspended. The actor is already turning himself around. Somewhere there will be a reconciliation. It’s a brilliant marketing scheme. The whole mess has brought a lot of attention and press to the show. Not to say that the blow out didn’t really happen, I just think the door has been very much left wide open for a possible return of Charlie Harper. Let’s face it, it would be historic, and fans would go crazy, giving the show a much needed boost!!
As I watched the opening scene, I thought the writers purposely left the door open (with Rose’s character being the only witness) that Charlie Harper is indeed alive and that she’s got him locked up somewhere.
Chuck and Charlie will kiss and make-up soon, as soon as this “imminent” settlement between CBS and Sheen gets finalised (very convenient timing…don’t you think?)
Just my 2 cents… (Canadian Currency…lol)
Shut up and say ahhhhh! Face the truth, the death speech by Rose isn’t true. She’s a liar, stalker and recently been seen with Mr Harper stalking her. He probably saw something he wasn’t supposed to and she goes after him and kills him off the show. This is where we all get creative! Let’s say the producers could at least reveal hints about rose’s untold past, while ashton, alan and jake for the sake of the death of charlie at least spy on her, until ashton’s character gets distracted by rose’s conspiracy woman stalker while jake and alan freakishly separate and then the three of them find each other in an unknown place where charlie was killed off. But is Charlie there?! There’s your show….
Nope nope nope hated it hated it. ashton is not a good actor for this show he is as dumb as the boy. I may see it a few times flipping channels but will never rush home to watch it like I did when it was Carlie. They should have killed the show not Charlie. They knew if they did not have ashton nude no one would have flipped to watch it. If I knew he was going to be nude I would never have watched. I also told my daughter the next part of the show before it even happen. I like to be surprised but you could tell what was going to happen before it did. will never watch it again like I said….
Charlie you rock the show is not the same.
Kill the show or bring Charlie back………
Eh! It was ok I guess. I’ll give it a few more episode before I decide whether I’ll continue to watch it or not. Its obviously not the same w/o Charlie but i hope they add another character… maybe Newman from Seinfeld or Steve Urkel…somebody to make it more appealing to watch! Haha. By the way, isn’t Jake a little too old for his mommy to still be dropping him off to his daddy? Just sayin’
a) it’s supposed to be a comedy, so I won’t over analyze the lack of emotion (“I’m hungry. Is any one else hungry ?” Was that Angus’s only line last night ?)
b) it wasn’t funny.
c) I was hoping Ashton wouldn’t be doing Kelso, so that was disappointing.
Overall I think this premiere was a C-. I don’t like how his death was handled nor do I like how they treated his funeral. Underneath the rough Charlie Harper skin he was a person with a heart by the way he treated everyone.
There was Berta who Charlie always treated like family, Jake who Charlie brought into his house and at times treated like a son, Crazy Rose who Charlie could have put in jail for the insane things she did to him, and finally the leach Allan that Charlie supported and let live under his roof rent free. So you would think these characters would show some sadmess and mourne the death of Charlie. Instead they act like they were happy to see him go. I know this is a comedy but it could have been made funny but with some class. That makes those characters more warped than Charlie Harper could ever be.
I do hope that future episodes respect the memory of Charlie Harper a bit more.
I agree I missed the show but from I’ve been reading…. Charlie was the kind hearted one in that group, he took in his opportunist brother and his son. Treated Berta as she owned the place. I wish I could have seen it. I kept looking but didn’t find it what channel is it on?
I see by the end of the season Sheen coming back, and this season will be a “dream”. The show was terrible last night, lacked any of the comedy it’s been known for over the years, and Kutcher looked as if he didn’t belong there.
The show was starting to get a little smelly before the “Charlie” thing.
Now it just plain STiNKS!
Two and half men will NOT be the SAME without Charlie Sheen. It Will Fail.
(I am Not a fan of Charlie Sheen, But I enjoy watching the old two and half men.)
