 Twilight Zone Movie Gets Screenwriter

According to Variety, screenwriter Rand Ravich has signed on to write the latest film incarnation of the classic television series The Twilight Zone. Rand Ravich previously wrote and directed the Johnny Depp film, The Astronaut’s Wife. The Twilight Zone is being produced by Warner Bros. in conjunction with Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way.

A couple weeks back, I wrote about some of my favorite 4th of July movies. What I neglected to mention was my other favorite part of the 4th of July, watching an all-day marathon of The Twilight Zone on the Sci-Fi SyFy Channel. Even now, 50 years after the show first premiered, I’m entertained and occasionally frightened by Rod Serling’s masterful tales of the weird and wondrous, so it’s no surprise that I’ve been following plans of the most recent Twilight Zone film adaptation closely.

If done correctly, unlike the hit-or-miss 1983 Twilight Zone movie, a modern adaptation of The Twilight Zone could be excellent. Unfortunately, critics did not respond well to Ravich’s previous work, giving The Astronaut’s Wife a very low 16% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, just because that movie wasn’t well-received doesn’t mean Twilight Zone can’t be good. Right…?

Personally, I never saw The Astronaut’s Wife, so I’d love to hear some more educated opinions on Ravich’s talents. Let us hear your thoughts in the comments.

Currently, there is no scheduled release date for The Twilight Zone.

  1. another Twilight Movie I think it Would be Fun,
even I would Like To know About Rand Ravich and Astronaut’s Wife.

  2. I love the Twilight Zone! And I agree the marathons are awesome. I have never heard of the Johnny Depp movie, but I often disagree with Rotten Tomatoes…

  3. This could be a series of movies, like James Bond. They could be something like The Twilight Zone: 30,000 Feet, The Twilight Zone: Wishes, The Twilight Zone: Mars, etc…

  4. Astronaut’s Wife had some problems (what film doesn’t?), but over all I think it’s been unfairly maligned. It has some very interesting cinematography and the performances were superb. It’s basically a story about an abusive marriage disguised as sci-fi monster movie. If you forget the sci-fi angle you’re better off. The usually likable Depp turns our expectations upside down by using all that charm and beauty to sucker us into the clutches of a soulless controlling sociopath. Charlize Theron is wonderful as the tormented wife who can’t decide if the evil is real or in her head. If you’ve ever been in that situation or know someone who has, you’ll recognize the surreal and disconnected nature of her character’s situation and just how perfectly Depp hits the nail on the head. They do a beautiful job of setting up an incredible intimacy between these people, so when it starts to unravel, we question what we’re seeing just as she does. I basically just see the sc-fi angle as an allegory of the “monster” that can emerge from any of us under the right (or wrong) circumstances.
