Rumor Patrol: Summit Planning ‘Twilight’ Spin-Off Movie

Twilight Bree Tanner Spin off movie Rumor Patrol: Summit Planning Twilight Spin Off Movie

With the huge success of The Twilight Saga, and only two movies left to go (Breaking Dawn parts 1 & 2), is it really a surprise that Summit Entertainment is already looking ahead to see how far it can carry on the franchise?

Now consider this as strictly RUMOR at this point because it comes from a first-time tipster but a source (who works in licensing) over at What’s Playing is reporting that Summit is looking to turn the Twilight spin-off novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner into a movie.

Our own Rob Keyes (correctly) speculated that the release of the Bree Tanner book back in March would lead to a possible movie adaptation, which would act as a spin-off to the Twilight movie franchise, just as the novella is a spin-off/companion to the book series.

Fans of Twilight will know the character of Tanner from the book and she appeared briefly in this year’s Eclipse movie where she was played by Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill). “It goes without saying Summit want to continue this franchise… Tanner is the one they’re looking at post-Breaking Dawn,” said the source, although supposedly the studio would most likely switch actresses from Ferland for the spin-off (why exactly?).

When pressed for any possible names for the new Tanner that were being thrown around, a couple were noted by the source: Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass, Let Me In) and Ellen Fanning (little sister of Dakota, who also stars in a couple of the Twilight movies). Those aren’t exactly definitive choices but more like “wish-list” type thinking. It would have to be at this point as, after all, we’ve still got both parts of Breaking Dawn to come before we get to the point of Twilight spin-offs hitting the big-screen.

However, with the amount of cash The Twilight Saga has snagged so far with just three movies (over $1.7 billion worldwide and that’s not including the books), you can bet on the fact that there will be more Twilight to come post-Breaking Dawn. Whether it’ll be a Bree Tanner-focused spin-off remains to be seen, but if this rumor is anything to go by then discussions are already underway.

Again, take this latest Twilight info as RUMOR until we either something official that proves it true or false. It could go either way as on the one hand I can definitely believe that Summit wants to make spin-off movies, but at the same time rumors are abound when it comes to this particular vampire franchise.

One of the problems Summit has had and still faces today is the fact that they’ve run out of books. Make no mistake, the studio wants to milk the Twilight franchise for all its worth but all they have to go on is one spin-off book that focuses on a supporting character. After that what will the studio do next? Perhaps author Stephanie Meyer will write more spin-off books and Summit can go from there.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – for now let’s just concentrate on Breaking Dawn and this one (possible) spin-off movie, shall we?

Stay tuned to Screen Rant to see if this rumor is true or not.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn will be released in two parts, with Part 1 hitting theaters on November 18th, 2011 and Part 2 following almost a year later on November 16th, 2012.

  1. They are sure trying to milk it for all its worth…

    • Awwwww GEEZ!! Somebody bite me and put me out of my misery!

  2. dear god when will the madness ENDDDD

    • Uhm… Never

  3. What groundhog popped his head out and decided we needed another one of these? Help us all.

  4. So they won’t stop till mankind is dead eh???

  5. Omg i hate twilight sooo much, they cant possibly go on forever can they?!? Theyre vampires for crying out loud…..they dont age lol!

  6. As a Twilight fan, I am NOT interested in freaken Bree, WTF is that about? ALICE YES, other Cullens YES, why Bree?? She had like 3 sent in the book.

  7. So now they will need a stable-full of teenage boy-actors being force-fed steroids so they can have the teen-age girls wetting their theatre seats?

    Honestly, this is disgusting.

  8. As a fan of the books and one who finds the movies harmless fun: this is ridiculous. I don’t care if they do make this movie. I won’t pay to see it.

Who will see a “Twilight” movie without Robert Pattinson anyway? Everybody knows that he is their major box-office draw and good luck getting him to come back. Crazy fans that follow him everywhere? I’d stay as far away from this franchise as I could once my contract was up.

Bree had much too big a role in “Eclipse” the movie as it was. Who wants to watch just her story?

  9. If this movie happens and if it tanks at the box office THEN you will see the end of all this.

Until they decide to do a reboot of the entire series in 5-6 years. 8)

    • Don’t say that Vic! Some studio head might read that and think its a good idea. Then in 5 years I’ll have the twilight cast and crew running around my city again!

      • sully,

I don’t think I have to give them that idea, bud.

        Vic

  10. Why don’t they do twilight from Edwards pov yeah I wish she would finish the book

    • Yes.. Stephanie needs to finish Midnight Sun. Enough time has passed since the leak. Eager fans want to get inside Edwards head again.

  11. To have more movies added to this series is a awsome idea myself and my daugter are fans and would love to see this happen. We dont want to see these movies end after breaking dawn. Maybe they should start a tv series that would be a big hit too. Hope to see this happen.

    • one tween TV vampire series is enough….

      • the vampires diaries is not as bad as twilight. its better than the crap teenage girls die to see and say it sucked

  12. Why am I not surprised.

  13. This is a waste of time to be honest. I actually like these movie. not a twihard but I enjoy the sillyness of it all. It’s my guilty pleasure. I can see how this would make a good story since we know how she ends but it may be too grim for the tweens.

  14. It won’t work. The only reason it won’t work is because the audience is not invested in the character Bree. The story is about Bella/Edward/Jacob and the wonderful supporting roles. Bree is an insignificant role. Most people didn’t even read the novella. I mean no offence… there is just not an audience out there big enough.

  15. I am a big fan of both the twilight books (including bree tanner) and the films, but i dont see what they can get out of this movie. What I do think will work is a programme or movie about Fred, who is a character in the bree book. He never meets the cullens because he escapes from the newborns. I think his gift would be great to watch

  16. they picked Bree because the book is out there for them to adapt and she is the star of the novella.

  17. If Summit are desperate to make extra cash on this series then perhaps they would be better off focusing on Jaspers story. What little we heard of his past sounds like it could make a really entertaining story.
With regards to Vic’s comments on a reboot, I for one would not have a problem with this, after reading the books several times over I have come to see what an horrendous job they did on the first movie and would happily see it remade – right.

  18. I am honestly not surprised, actually I am surprised they haven’t decided to reboot the franchise already (which I suspect they might attempt post last movie)…

  19. Well, I like all the books & the movies as well. IMO…I feel to continue the saga it would need to be based on Reneesme. Since she is the daughter of Edward & Bella & is imprinted on by Jacob. How that story would play out would be interesting.

  20. wattttttttttttttttt? Bonjour tu n’es pa americain? Tu es francois?

  21. Really?…
