Howard Shore, the man responsible for the Academy Award-winning score for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy has been corralled by the Twilight folks for that franchise’s forthcoming third installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.  A brass band-backed thank you to MovieScore Magazine by way of First Showing for the news.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will of course feature the franchise’s stars (Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner) and has been directed by David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy).  Melissa Rosenberg (who penned the screenplays for the previous installments, Twilight and New Moon ) adapted the  Stephanie Meyer novel.

Shore’s resume is extremely impressive, having worked in the film department on Doubt, Eastern Promises, The Aviator, The Game and Mrs. Doubtfire, as well as the aforementioned LOTR (just to name a few).  So we know the music will be solid.  A great score elevates anything it’s attached to, so twi-hards should be thrilled their newest fix is all-but-guaranteed to be decent.

  1. Not sure this movie deserves a score done by Howard Shore, but maybe it'll bring some decency to that mess :D

  2. yea not sure this movie deserves howard shore….. why is he doing this? Must be the money

  3. Between the choice of director and now Howard Shore maybe they're really trying to raise the bar with this one.

  4. I highly doubt it, but it would be a nice surprise if the third movie turns out to be decent..

  5. It's the best book. Not like that is saying a ton…

  6. Agreed, but I have issues with the actors, that's why I'm so prejudiced, haha

  7. THIS IS HORRIBLE!!!

*First off, let me premise this as coming from a composer. That's what I am, what I study, and what I plan to do for the rest of my life.*

Even though Shore is an absolutely phenomenal composer, what has really made the Twilight series even halfway tolerable has been their soundtracks and sourcing from independent and alternative bands.

The films' music supervisors did a grand job in recognizing viable indie music trends and asking forerunners in that genre to come up with original music for the film. To quote a Sirius XMU radio DJ, the film's have “brought a whole generation of popcorn-chomping teenagers to loving independent music.” Though the films overall are not altogether 'good', they've inadvertently gave a big boost to what many believe to be the saviors of our failing music industry.

Ergo, by employing a major composer into the mix, they're killing off the one main benefit these films have brought to popular culture.

  8. Mr. Shore, don't waste your time on this crap! You will lose several fans! Like ME!

  9. He should do it, I've never even heard of him, but if he does he will gain many fans (like me). Many more people will know of him and like him if he does.

  10. I loved the first two movies waiting on three and four ~~Also read all four books~~~they are all excellent~~and I'm glad Mr Shore is doing the score!!!

  11. Ahem. Pardon me for disagreeing, but um…no offense, but do we Twilight fans really CARE if YOU think it sucks or not???? In case you didn't quite get what I was implying…the answer is: no. :P :) lol Just know that the number of teenage girls who are in love with those guys seriously outweigh the people who don't like it! Mwuhahahaha! Twilight rocks.
    The End.

  13. I completely agree with “Christopher Walker”. This mainstream major motion picture type music has really taken something away from the unique quality of the former Twilight movies. Terrible even! Robert Pattinson’s music was soooo much better. I really hope they bring Rob’s music back for the last film(s)!
