Short version: Twilight really is strictly for fans of the book – while not terrible, it’s far from great.

Screen Rant reviews Twilight
So it’s finally here.
Twilight, at least for a select group of ladies, has been THE most anticipated movie of 2008 – and their wait is finally over. The question is: Was it worth it?
For them, yes.
For the rest of us? Eh, not so much.

Twilight opens with the introduction of our heroine, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart). She is in sunny Arizona with her mom and new stepfather, and as they prepare for a long road trip she decides that she’d rather go up to Washington state to stay with her estranged father, Charlie (Billy Burke). He lives in the small town of Forks (population 3,000) and is the local sheriff.
She arrives in the middle of the school year so although it should be hard to make friends (and it’s implied), she manages to connect with a group of kids who are far more welcoming than she is ready to be welcomed. They give her the scoop on who’s who and they soon point out the Cullens, an odd assortment of very pale-skinned guys and gals. To make things weirder, they are apparently foster brothers/sisters yet they are “couples.” They’ve been taken in by the local Dr. Cullen and his wife.
One of the group is of course, Edward (Robert Pattinson). His story is that “no girl is good enough for him.” Of course Bella is immediately fixated on him, although the feeling is apparently very much not mutual. As a matter of fact when she is assigned to be his lab partner, he seems to be repulsed by her.
Edward leaves for a few days, and when he returns his mood towards Bella has changed considerably. He’s now polite and at least feigns interest. She (mostly) gets over being offended and tries to get to know him although he still doesn’t want to get close to her. Almost immediately he saves her from being killed in a car accident in a scene that’s been shown in the trailer. She’s no dummy and doesn’t miss the fact that he was across the parking lot, got over to her in a flash and was able to keep a van from smashing into her (to the point that he left a dent in the door with his hand). [Note slight sarcasm there, folks]
Anyway, we soon meet Dr. Cullen (Peter Facinelli) at the hospital, whose makeup job is so incredibly white that he looks like the Cesar Romero version of the Joker. He is none to pleased about Edward (I guess I can’t call him “Ed,” huh?) possibly exposing who he really is to save Bella’s life.
One thing leads to another and the burgeoning romance is on its way, with a side trip to a confrontation with the “bad” vampires who actually kill humans to feed (go figure). You see the Cullens only drink the blood of animals. The bad guys have been responsible for a number of gruesome murders in town recently. One of them decides to target Bella and thus we get the final confrontation which finally brings us some decent action.
So what’s good?
I thought that the stars and supporting cast actually did a really great job. Bella’s friends were engaging, funny and they played their roles very naturally. Billy Burke was low key and very good as Bella’s father, Kristen Stewart did a decent job, and I have to say that despite his severely sculpted eyebrows and uber-funky hair that I liked Rob Pattinson’s portrayal of Edward Cullen. I don’t know how closely the way he played the character matched the version in the book, but I thought that his uncertainty and awkwardness in light of how powerful he really was made him quite charming.
There were quite a few moments of unexpected humor in the film that I enjoyed. Nothing huge or slapsticky, but just little things that were enough to actually make me laugh out loud (which some comedies this year didn’t manage to make me do). Really the performances made this worthwhile for me.
So what wasn’t so good?
For a non-fan, it was really a pretty bland film. It seemed very slow-moving at times, and let’s face it – it’s a pretty “stock” teen romance movie. There wasn’t anything really special here outside of the fact that it had, you know… vampires.
Nothing really eye-catching as far as cinematography or interesting shots, and one think that really struck me as bad were the visual effects. When the film had its first “super-speed” effect, where the bad vampires corner one of the locals, it was so poorly done that I think I actually gasped out loud. I mean there was this incredibly cheesy blur that I can’t really describe except to say that anything you see on an average episode of Smallville is done far better.
Imagine my shock at the end of the film when in the credits I saw Industrial Light & Magic listed among the visual effects companies. I can only guess that they were responsible for some other effect and not the one I just mentioned (which was terrible throughout the film).
Towards the end the teen-romance-cheese-factor pegged the needle in the aftermath of the big battle in a scene between Edward and Bella. That was about the hardest scene in the movie to sit through, and pretty much from there until the end it was quite sappy and reminded me of a typical teen TV series on the CW.
The audience full of Twilight fans seemed to enjoy it a lot and gave it a thumbs up, so I guess it’s achieved its goal. I’m curious to see if it does well enough at the box office to generate a sequel (which I’m thinking would actually be better than this film).
So take all that for what it’s worth – I’ll leave the decision of whether to see it or not up to you.
Oh, and yes (for the fans), Edward does “sparkle” in the film and Bella is clumsy.

Jess H, thanks my teachers very smart but extreamly hard to keep up with .. i liked the movie just a lil bit more the 2nd time i saw it .. i was a bit fussy the 3rd time dow.. :/
Wooaa Tina dont you think u should slow your roll with watching twilight so much i mean i like twilight just as much as every person in this room but as a big and i mean BIG movie fan you should limit how much you watch a film cuz you can get pretty bord with it and not want to watch it as much,, well at all .. but then again everyone reacts differantly . but im just saying
oh by the way i no they already casted the ppl for new moon or whatever there gonna call it (cuz there putting new moon and eclips together) let me no if you find anything interesting about it , cuz iv been looking and havent found much :[
Well I was dragged kicking and screaming to this movie… gotta love having a g/f. But after i sat in my seat and was willing to give the movie a shot, i did enjoy myself. Enough for me to read all of the books since the veiwing. Im looking foward to new moon. and yea get a new jacob black cause hes got alot of acting to do in the next 3 movies.
Book was way better then the movie.
@Josh
Im suprised a lot of people I talked to liked the guy that played Jacob but just thought that he needed to cut his hair.
@Rachel
I agree that is why i am only seeing it one more time so I wont get bored with the movie. I almost did that to myself when TDK was out. I dont want to ruin the movie for myself! Also where did you hear that they were combining the next two books for the next movie?
funny how many people still drop money to watch this movie over and over even when they didn’t like it much to begin with , I just watched it online for the second time and it’s still not great to me lol, I can actually see more and more crappy acting from Kristen every time I watch it .
I thought that the actors/actresses in the movie did a great job. It stayed pretty close to the books. It was kind of corney in a funny way. I look forward to seeing the sequel. I hope they keep everyone to play in the next movie.
Let me start by saying I know that adaptations can be difficult. The story had such potential, the adaptation failed miserably. Key elements were skipped over and the story that played out on screen isn’t a fraction close to the story in the book. Edward and Bella’s blossoming love through time spent together was lost somewhere along the way…maybe in the trees. The key elements that I missed the most were Edwards glorious meadow and the trip that lead them there. The amazing struggle he faced in the meadow as he let Bella get closer to him was lost to a small patch of grass off school property. What happebned to the time spent in her room and the conveniently overlooked confession from Edward that he stays at night and listens to her sleep. The revelation that she speaks the words “I Love You Edward” in her sleep, where were all of the key elements that lead us all to adore this couple? What happened to the times he hummed her to sleep while holding her, when the love grows stronger and deeper than either could possibly imagine? The prom was another total loss, right along side the whole James fight scene. What happened to the revelation about Alice? Someone over at Summit thought of a teen audience and stopped there, these people need to have other projects to work on during New Moon’s production! I would have gladly sat through a low budget 3-4 hour film at double/triple the cost for some insight as to why they love each other play out on screen! The cast however was a great choice, no complaints there! Abc, CBS, NBC could have done better! I wish there was some way for a REMAKE!
Sorry I am so late with my review for viewing number four for the movie twilight, but I just been so busy, that I haven’t been able to do anything else but chores, work and schoolwork!!!
Anywho! Reading all of your replies about the warnings of watching twilight movie so much got me to think!!! I am promising that after this last viewing of twilight(my fivth), I will wait until the dvd comes out. I am starting to realize that I am watching the movie more than reading the twilight books and that is bad for me. That is bad only because as a reader, I yell at others who would reather watch a book on screen than read the book and because of that, I need to start get back onto the train of reading and less on the train of watching movies. I am not saying the watching movie is not a bad thing, but in a book vs. movie debate I would be fighting on the book side!!!
Also I am part of a book club were the members come back to discuss the twilight movie and I feel that the more you view the movie, the more detail you catch!!!
(Coming up next Tina’s fivth and final review of twilight, so please stay tuned!!!)
This movie was downright horribal. Listen kid’s if you want to see a good vampire movie with all the vampyric romance and intrigue, with half of the teenage cheese…check out interview with the vampire,or even bram stoker’s dracula….there are far better movie’s out their worth watching. All this movie is is a trend setting over-exposed piece of crap aimed at teenage girl’s hungry for a story that’s almost as alienative as they are.
Let me start by saying I am a HUGE fan of the books; all of them. I (like always) never expect the movies to be as great as the books. It felt so rushed and squished. It was like the main actors were board and wanting to leave. In my opinion, there was no connection between bella and edward, they made it out to be a high school crush, not two madly in love, infatuated teenagers that new they were destined to be together forever. I completely see were the director was going with the transfer from book to movie, naturally you are going to loose detail, so why not put in the small things. For instance; Victoria, in the book the author descibed her hair as ” A startling shade of RED”, “brilliant orange”and “fire like”, why not dye her hair red/orange? These smaller details are what bothered me the most. The scenery was my favorite part.:<

i loved the twilight saga. it was amazing i just couldnt stop reading it. when the movie came out i didnt get to see it until two days later, but my friends all hated it. i went into the movie theatre suspecting a train wreck but i absolutely loved it. Edward (in the movie) didnt seem creepy. he was doing a good acting job. in the book is said he looked like he was in pain from being close to bella. and he did a good job acting like that. if u read the book reallt closely than maybe u could understand that they hit the spot in acting. and stephanie meyers even helped with the movie and so obviously she would want to make it like her dream she had in 2003 that started this.
I commented earlier and it wasn’t that great of a review, but I saw the movie again with other family and it was so much better the second time around, b/c I was able to relax and enjoy it for the essence of the film, as opposed to nit picking it apart. I really loved it and despite some little flaws (like the meadow scene could be better) I appreciated it for what it was.
Also, the director noted that many scenes had to be cut due to time and weather restraints, so that is one reason why the meadow scene wasn’t better.
Now go to my website and get a Bella bracelet!
I thought it was a crappy movie but I kind of found it endearing in a way. I like the whole indie thing though. Surprisingly 3 adult friends who hadn’t read the books saw it and love ‘the love story’. Two went and saw it a second time and the third said she would have gone right back if she could have.
I see many complaints about Kristen’s acting. I liked her shuttle performance. I thought she really nailed some of the scene just like the book, ie the way she hesitated before saying she wasn’t afraid just to make sure it was true.
I think without the chemistry between her and Rob (even in interviews/photo shoots they seem like two magnets with a push and pull between them) and her keeping the story grounded it might have been a complete disaster (like the completely beautiful but so boring Phantom of the Opera – way to ruin a great stage play). I like Kristen as an actor but I think having to wear such dark brown contacts did make her eye flat, and she was stripped of so much of her character by the screenplay/editing? In many places, i.e. when Edward says he’s been watching her sleep, Bella doesn’t even have a line! I thought Kristen did a great job there and in a few other scenes with just her looks. Also I loved her voice overs. I wonder if Billy Burke (Charlie) or Rob (Edward) would have been as good if they’d cast a light weight actress to be Bella? Guess we’ll never know for sure, but we’ll get to see how Kristen does with the heavy stuff in New Moon. Hopefully she’ll gain some new fans.
Just one thing to say about this movie – SEXUAL TENSION, from the momment Bella meet Edward to the end… Damn, i enjoyed this film a lot, and i’m glad to say, i haven’t read the book yet. Best scene, the baseball game xD
I just came back from seeing this movie with friends, and to be honest, it was pretty much as bland as I expected.
I personally think there was some major over-acting going on, and too much push on making everything awkward.
I found the actors suited the characters in the book quite well.. and who knew Jacob’s hair was THAT long
I felt that Charlie was done perfectly. Bella seemed more mature in the movie than she in the books – which I found to be a surprise, and a great relief. Also, I found that the Swan house was practically exactly how I pictured it from the book. However I had a different idea of the Cullen house, but in the books it’s pretty much left up to the readers imagination.
Personally, I think the movie was alright… but nothing to rave about. I don’t see why people are spending money to see it four times.
As you noted.. the graphics where terrible! I was watching in pretty much shock, wondering how and why they didn’t fix it up. The speed ups lagged, which made it look quite strange. And personally, I didn’t really like the way the sparkles looked on Edwards’ skin.. It looked very touch and go so to speak.
The books were an entertaining easy read, and quite hard to put down. The movie is on the other end of the spectrum. It was almost painful as some stages.
I’m hoping New Moon is better… but damnit, someone PLEASE with Jacob a haircut! I knew his hair was long.. but I though shoulder length, not elbow!
(Btw, you made a few minute spelling errors, like think instead of thing, but nothing too major :] I’ve probably made a fair few myself)
I Just want to say are you made, the film is amazing and yes we already knew its not going to be as good as the book but come on its a bloody good shot and i cant wait for new moon. i give it 5.
btw courtney i have been to see it 6 times and i never get bored. but everyone is entitled to there opinion.
i just think its the best movie of the year.
I am Glad that the actors put there own thoughts into the characters because i think it give a little more depth to the film, also i want to say what a grand job they all did, i think the casting crew have made a great job of picking the right people.
Also i want to say what a magnificent singer/songwriter Rob is. What can’t he do. lol
I just want to say thank you stephenie meyer for giving us the Twilight saga.
Hello, sorry for my late respond with my last viewing of the movie. I regreat seeing the movie for the fivth time. I don’t regreat falling in love with the series, I only regreat seeing the movie too many times. During my last book meeting I out of the nine members of the group, didn’t say a thing and I had seen the movie more than anyone there. What does that say to you?
It says to me that I need to really start rereading the twilight series again. Just to refresh my memory. No I am not old!!!
That is all!!!
I agree with the comments above that the film was an average one while the book did a better job with discriptions, the movie didn’t.
Not only that, the characters potrayed in the movie wern’t exactly how they were described at in the book. Some important scenes to show the sequence in the film were missed out and other extra scenes were added in, which confused the audience.
But there were good points – the special effects were rather good for an average film, and there was a basic story line and there was a good ‘feel’ towards the movie.
Overall, it was a good one, despite the negative points but the book still would receive more thumbs up than the movie!
I watched the film first and i absolutely loved it, thought the film was great. I told all my friends in college to watch it, and some of them told me they are reading the book, so i decided to read the book yesterday.
The book is nearly 100 times better than the film i can assure you. In the book you read about their love and it makes you tingle. There is so much missing in the film and i think the director left out the main bits from the book, but i think thats what happens when a book is made into the film, for example, the Harry Potter books have some amazing chapters, but arent in the films which dissapoints the audience.
I thought the acting was good, but i thought Kristen’s portrayal of Bella was a bit awkward, she seemed a bit stiff and in the book she seemed a bit more happier and alive, so i was dissapointed at that.
I think the movie would have been better if there werent any “improvised” scenes, and that the director would have stuck to the scenes in the book instead of going off on a different track and adding bits in that werent relevent.
Before reading the book, and watched the film, i gave it 5/5, brilliant!
Then i read the book and decided the film was more of a 3/5, okay.
I WENT TO SEE TWILIGHT AND LIKED WHEN EDWARD IS SUCKING THE VENOM OUT OF BELLA IT LOOKED REALLY FUNNY:)
I THINK THAT THEY WILL DO A BETTER JOB WITH NEW MOON BECAUSE THEY WILL HAVE MORE MONEY! BUT ISWEAR I WILL NOT GO AND SEE NEW MOON IF THEY REPLACE JACOB BECAUSE WHEN I READ THE BOOK I HAVE TO PICTURE TAYLOR BECAUSE I ALREADY SAW HIM IN TWILIGHT.I THINK THEY COULD HAVE FOUND SOMEONE BETTER TO PLAY EMMET.BUT I THINK IT IS STILL A GOOD MOVIE
GOOOOOOOOOOOO EDWARD I LOVE U 4-EVER <3
Seriously, no movie can live up to the book.
The book was indescribebly amazing, i read all 3, on the 4th now.
So, in my opinion the movie is an A =]
Amazinggg….
Nice acting-portrayed the book well.
I saw Twilight this weekend (I’m English, so it’s not been out all that long) and I must say, despite not being a reader of the books (or even knowing this film was based on a series of novels) I was impressed.
Now, the whole vampire-turned-love-story isn’t new, in fact, it’s probably one that’s been around since vampires were first talked about (whether they do or don’t exist is something to ponder, right?) but Twilight really does it justice.
I agree with the majority of people here who say that the film feels awkward at times (I was trying so hard not to cringe during the first few interactions between Edward and Bella) but I feel the electricity between the two characters really helped to keep me and my girlfriend interested.
I feel the story was explained well, and there were plenty of moments where I felt as though I was able to work out future plot-lines for myself (Jacob’s family being werewolves, for example) which kept me saying “Ah! So that’s what it’s all about”.
I think a tiny aspect that I’m not sure I’m fond of or not were the visual effects. I didn’t know this, but after reading an older comment here earlier, Industrial Light & Magic were one of the SFX teams who worked on this film – that is, I must say, quite difficult to believe. Though I think the visual effects really did help to keep the modesty of the film throughout, and made the whole experience seem more realistic (or as realistic as a fictional story about mythical creatures can be!) they did have a slight ‘TV drama’ feel about them – again, they could’ve been better, but I’m not holding this against the film, no way. Actually, saying that, the baseball scene really did blow me away.
There’s nothing immense in the way of cinematography here (it’s certainly no ‘Sin City’ or ‘300′) but again I think this could help to preserve the realism here, and make it feel more like a drama, rather than a piece of fantasy fiction. The very basic blue filter that is used throughout most of the film also works well to keep the atmosphere ice-cold, and is very effective in creating the appropriate mood.
Overall, we both enjoyed this film very much indeed, in fact, my girlfriend went out the day after and bought the second book in the series, and now can’t get enough of them. The characters are effortlessly cool and portrayed perfectly (especially Jasper – he really stood out for me) the soundtrack fits excellently, despite the fact that I’m not so fond of Paramore, but never mind. I think, if I were to score Twilight out of a total of five, I’d be very quick to give it full marks, but I think that’d be a tad frivolous. I’ll give it a 4.25, just to be difficult. I’ll definitely buy the DVD.
i am a book fan and the film was well disapointing the first half was like some bad porno! cheesey music and awkwardness!
im surpised no one has said anything about the soundtrack which was awful.
music can really capture the feel of the film,. they failed with this.
effects were well bad.
the love i could not see at all.
edward was yummy but he didnt look like he loved bella.
it was sooo awkward to watch. dont remember it being like that in the book?!!?!?
the 2nd half was better but i had to explain things to my friends who had not read the book. alice was hardly in it and nothing was explained. basically i was pissed off. if they didnt have the funds to make it good why bother. they just ruined it. they prob remake it like they did with the hulk as the first one of that was shit in a few years times.
however the scenery was good and some scenes were like how i imagined. but acting was no good. effects bad soundtrack crap.
there was NO chemistry between them. apart from when they kissed. so it seemed like a physical thing really.
they focused alot on how bella felt for edward but not all the things edward says about bella which makes u see how much he cares for her.
i could have directed that better man.
I think that Nikki Reid played Rosalie very well.
I just don’t understand why they always kept blinking so much. Like when they were talking they were blinking non-stop! It was sort of funny.
The movie was okay, but could have been better. I’m glad they are changing the director.
Out of 5, I would give this movie a 4. Because it wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t excellent. It was surprising pretty good compared to what I had in mind. They changed some scenes, but I understand why they had to.
Watch the movie if you haven’t already!
I am a huge twilight fan and loved the movie, even though I was mostly watching Edward=)
For the record, you need to read the book first!
I saw the film advertised over here in the UK but read the book first. I was totally hooked after the 1st book and have read all 4 in the past 2 weeks (much to my boyfirends dismay).
The books are some of the best I have ever read, I loved the storyline and loved the explanations behind everything. As well as the romance I found everything else very interesting.
I have just been to see the film and actually felt sorry for my bf (who hasn’t read the books) for having to sit and watch it.
I thought the film missed out way too much of the storyline. They didn’t emphasise the bond / connection between Bella and Edward enough. It made it seem like a soppy highschool romance.
The meadow scene was dissapointing to say the least, and they didn’t show the importance of Alice or the family that much.
I knew there would be a lot missed out however it seemed to miss too much out for the film to be able to truely encompass what the story was all about.
Overall out of 5 stars I would give it a mere 2. This is based on the excellent castings of some of the main cast. (However some of the acting left a lot to be desired)
My only issue with casting was Jacob Black, I am not sure it is because of his acting ability but more to do with he wasn’t what I envisaged for that character.
No doubt I will still buy it and watch it again and will go and see the sequal!
I’m going to see it….when it comes to my local theater next week…small town…small prices compared to the mall cinema! I buy myself a $9.00 ticket at the mall when I reeeeeally think the movie is going to be great! LOL!
I read the first book in 2 days…yes, it was like crack…. addicting. So, I have to see the movie, but I’m not expecting too much here.
I am going to read the rest of the series too….. one of my fellow teachers at work summed it up well: “ahhhhh to be 16 and in love with a Vampire”! Ha ha ha. Funny how the book is grabbing women of all ages!
I almost cried when I came out of the cinema!!!
What the he’ll was that film about?
I’m obssessed with all the books and I loved how the author expressed Bellas love for Edward but it really didn’t come across in the film
I’m utterly dissapointed in it.
Maybe if bells actually smiled more because I swear she’s suppost to be happy!!!
Also I agree that this should win the award for the most awquard silences just spit it out will you?!?!?
Wish a better person would have done it, hopefully new moon will be better??
X louise
