If you ever wanted proof that The Twilight Saga is truly unlike most any other popular fantasy series out there, consider this: the world-changing plot point in Breaking Dawn – Part 1 isn’t an end-all battle between good and evil or a cataclysmic event that could bring on the apocalypse. It is instead… a wedding.
Twihards will finally get to see teenage human Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and centuries-old vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) tie the knot in the first half of Breaking Dawn – and, in a newly-released featurette, the film’s cast claims its as big a deal for them as for their fans.
Breaking Dawn – Part 1 hits U.S. theaters in about a month, which is why there has been an onslaught of behind-the-scenes clips, images, and TV spots unveiled from the penultimate Twilight flick recently. All of the marketing material unveiled so far has been focusing on the two big events that transpire in the film: Bella and Edward finally getting married and the former’s subsequent unnatural pregnancy (see: the full Breaking Dawn – Part 1 trailer for a visually-succinct outline of the film’s storyline).
Seeing how franchise stalwart screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg and newbie director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Gods and Monsters) have two movies to tell the tale of Breaking Dawn, it stands to reason that they could up the action and drama ante from Stephenie Meyer’s source material. On the other hand, most of the footage and imagery revealed from the second-to-last Twilight movie has been undeniably syrupy in tone, focusing solely on Bella and Edward’s relationship… and that sort of romantic material to this cinematic fantasy universe is (essentially) what epic battle sequences are to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Case in point: Listen to how the cast of Breaking Dawn – Part 1 talks up Bella and Edward’s wedding in the clip below:
There’s no denying that the Twilight cast and creative team understand what their fans love about this series and aim to please with Breaking Dawn – Part 1. The film looks to realize Meyer’s source material on the big screen with style, bringing to life everything from the aforementioned wedding to Bella and Edward’s tropical honeymoon (and all of the dark and twisted plot turns that transpire thereafter) in a fashion that should please those who worship this franchise.
Whether these films pander more exclusively to their fanbase than similar blockbuster series (ex. the Harry Potter movies) – and if that is a good/bad thing – is another matter altogether.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 arrives in U.S. theaters on November 18th, 2011.
