‘True Blood’ Season 6 Shortened To 10 Episodes – Will It Help Or Hurt The Series?

Published 1 year ago by , Updated July 15th, 2013 at 12:08 pm,

Season 6 of HBO’s gory, blood-sucking drama True Blood  may be nearly a year away, but departing  showrunner Alan Ball recently revealed that next season will cut out two episodes, leaving the total number at 10, instead of the typical 12. Could a shortened season 6 hurt the series, which is already abundant with characters and storylines?

Ball claims that next season will be reduced to 10 episodes partially because of star Anna Paquin (Sookie Stackhouse), who is due to give birth to twins with onscreen love-interest and real life husband Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) this November. Additionally, Ball also noted that the episode order was cut for “economic” reasons (read: to save money).

Here’s what Ball had to say to TV Guide:

We’re moving production to January to accommodate her. And there will only be 10 shows next season partly because of Anna and partly because of the economics.

The burning question that’s likely on many fan’s minds is what does that mean for their treasured misadventures in Bon Temps next year? While nothing is yet set in stone, this cost-cutting episode reduction could mean that less important subplots could be reduced significantly, if not completely phased out.  Finding time for Alcide and his pack, or Andy and his fae babies, might become difficult come next year.

Ultimately, True Blood is a vampire-centric show, so the main focus of next season will likely be on the the rise of the new Bill/Lilith fusion (affectionately dubbed ‘Bilith’), as well as the exploration of the mysterious Warlow (who apparently “owns” Sookie). Though we’ll have to wait and see exactly how producers decide to approach next season, having to fit so many character stories in a shortened episode order could prove to be problematic for the series overall. Because if there’s one thing True Blood is already lacking, it’s time to include so many of its concurrent, over-arching narratives.

True Blood season 6 down two episodes Bilith True Blood Season 6 Shortened To 10 Episodes Will It Help Or Hurt The Series?Behold ‘Bilith’

Then again, True Blood’s seasons have always feel a bit bloated, often leaving the season finales with a quick wrap-up and cliffhanger. If producers are able to provide a more succinct story, in fewer episodes, there’s a good chance that True Blood season 6 could help perfect the series’ ability to continue on into the future. Having already written off (or killed) more than a few familiar characters, producers have already begun trimming down the series – perhaps in a preemptive move to help the transition into next season easier.

All in all, True Blood season 6 will certainly be something for fans to keep an eye on. Whether this shortened season will be helpful or hurtful still remains to be seen. Either way, it’ll certainly add another level of intrigue to next season’s viewing (as if a god-like vampire and a mysterious vampire hybrid wasn’t enough).

  1. This can only help the show in my opinion because it will force them eliminate a lot of stupid storylines.

  2. I must pull a Ben Kendrick here and say that True Blood should be brought to an end soon, before it gets even more ridiculous than it already has. The ressources that it locks up should be invested into a new show.

  3. I’m a True Blood fan but IMO a shorter season could help.
And for the love of Lilith please kill of some characters. That’s the shows biggest problem for me. There’s not enough time in 1 hour to properly cover everything that’s going on. It’s kind of like Star Trek in a way, you know the main cast won’t ever die a true death…

  4. I’m sorry to see it clipped to 10 episodes, when they’ll just be getting into a new pool of writing and show running. With Ball leaving to pursue other things, I’m eager to see where the show heads in regard to direction – it just NEEDS TO GET GOING THERE immediately. This last season was all over the place, filled with knee-jerk killings, blotted storytelling and nothing terribly satisfying – including the insta-kill of what is probably the series’ best villain to date. We’ll wait with baited breath, but the order is clear – get to it, TRUE BLOOD – your cup hath runneth outeth.

  5. Like everybody else, I hope the number being clipped means a tighter story. I’d like to believe that wackjob Alan Ball leaving will be a good thing, since he has demonstrated he is just a slightly more talented Ryan Murphy that can’t keep a show properly running for more than a season or two. His old show Six Feet Under had similar problems in it’s later years. I hope Mark Hudis will approach things differently.

  6. This is the new norm, shortened seasons. As the budgets get tighter and advertising dollars dwindle and governmnet subsidies for TV go dry you will see more and more “shortened” seasons for shows. In 5 years or less the idea of a TV show season consiting of as many as 22 episodes will be labeled a “Conspiracy Theory”.

  7. Good, maybe they’ll give 2 more hours to Game of Thrones instead.

  8. The BBC does 6 hour and a half mini series that are generally really well done. Maybe they could use a consultant to teach them how to do much better with less…..Providing they actually have good writing that is….Something that others have mentioned has been poorly directed for some time….If you have good writers, but are asked to provide dumb scenereos….Then the writing comes off as dumb

    • That’s very true, this show still has a lot of the same writers from the 1st season on. This may not mean anything, but most consider the worst episodes of the 1st season to be the first three, and those were written by Alan Ball, while the rest were written by the other writers. Maybe this show has good writers but are forced to write dumb stuff Alan comes up with, stuff they don’t really believe in. I know it’s supposed to be a collaboration, but I’ve heard of many cases on TV shows where it’s the one guy vs the whole team scenario.

      • Are you freaking kidding me? You are saying that the show’s creator is the worst writer on the show? You do realize that the first episode is the pilot that Alan Ball wrote and is considered one of the best and most original pilots ever written. Most fans, including me, got addicted after the first episode. The first 3 episodes established the show. How can you say they are the worst? Who are you referencing?

  9. really would hurt the show the seasons are alresdy too short for those of us who love the series…and all of it’s characters have there own tale to tell so you can keep writting them off.this show has millions of views and if the season were longer or the show lenght was more then 1 hour it would have even more viewers…love the show if next season is shorter to accomodate the birth of anna’s twins then fine but season 7 has got to make up for it !!

  10. I love TB its the best show ever… cannot wait for season 6 even tho its 10 ep its still the best… my feelings about that… Way to go cannot wait!!!

  11. some show love the love the humer

  12. last series were sukie says maybe i’m a alien funny stuff

  13. We need a spin off with Eric, Pam, Tara & Lala.

  14. OMG ending of true blood was awsome!!! to bad for billith lol but way the gooo Eric more eric and sookie i hope they end together always wanted them both… And what the heck is happening with jason he’s my favorite too… Is that mean no more jessica and jason?? thats f*** up i love jessica she’s awsome but her being bill maker i wonder whats gonna happen… Pam and tara awsome i always hated the role of tara now i like it lol.. jessica ” I knew it” hahahah great season 5 cant wait for season 6 maybe 10 episode would be that bad i hope so maybe they should have to 2hrs show lol that would be awsome!!

  15. Mmmmm this is a hard decision.
Okay to be honest i am a huge huge huge huge true blood fan and I get excited everytime i watch the show. HOWEVER, i was very disappointed with this season because the story lines weren’t as clever or some of them seem pointless and didnt feel as tight gripping and surprising as some of the story lines were in the earlier seasons. I would love to see true blood to continue on for what 12 seasons but if it going the way it is I think they should just finish with season 6 so that they wont keep making the show go worse. What i found really disappointing about this season is firstly the way they have treated bill’s character and turning him into this god-like creature and it is a huge change of his character as he is always the one with this plan but now he seems weak and gave into this stupid religion and i thought that was kinda dumb. secondly, the show is really base on sookie and this love triangle with eric and bill however that was not elaborated at all this season and we barely saw her in this season which is disappointing (even though she is pregnant i understand that) thirdly the terry storyline was complete b******* and i didnt think it was even necessary, and also the lafayette story wasnt necessary either like what was the whole point of it? fourthly, i didnt like the beginning with jess hanging out with those teenagers because again that was moving away from the whole dark scene like they did in the first season if anyone understand what i just said then. fifthly, the way they killed of russell, pfft please you could have done something way more dramatic and epic then what they did. sixthly, they shouldnt have done alot with the authority because in the earlier seasons we all saw the authority as this big scary organisation and now seeing the whole thing it made it look kinda dull and not so scary.
As for the 10 episode situation, well it really depends on how the fans feel when they watch the first 5 episodes of the season, and i dont get with the economic situation, wouldn’t the show be bringing in the dough??

    • I totally agree with Sammy, I think sookie , eric, and bill should have been seen much more together. wanted to see more of sookie episodes. the three of them is much more interesting to me . for the most part the storyline was all over the place. I hope the next season will be more exciting. I still love love love true blood . huge fan always..

      • The whole point of S5 was to give the viewers a break from the Bill/Sookie/Eric triangle, which most fans got really tired of in S4. Everyone was bitching and moaning about it at the end of S4. Nobody wanted another season of Bill and Eric fighting over Sookie. So yes, in S5 we got to miss Sookie’s interactions with Bill and Eric and now can look forward to them in S6. Also the show is based on the Sookie Stackhouse books, and in Book 5, Sookie also distances herself from Bill and Eric and spends very little time with them. Sookie deals with her own problems, and Bill and Eric deal with theirs. The show always gives the fans what they want, but we are never happy with it.

  16. cant wait to watch the season 6!!! i so love TB! :p

    • I am just waiting fir Bill and Sookie to get back together and be like they were in season 1!!!!!

  17. its bad enough to wait allmost a year to watch then couldent see the ending iam sick of waiting and waiting it was good at first wen they fineshed wat was startet now i could car less and to shorten it how stuped and for the people i no they dont even care to watch a year hell with it just lost a few fans who use to injoy the show

  18. Although I think the seasons are already too short, I always look forward to True Blood, although it feels like a pregnancy – waiting 9 months for a delivery. I think the show is generally well-written and has some fantastic characters. I also think it’s truly overlooked during awards season. Some of the characters with few or little lines (Ginger – total crack up – and Jane Boathouse)are true scene stealers who don’t need a lot of meat on the bone to bring big laughs), and you can’t get good stuff like that with bad writing, acting, or directing. I don’t know why people continue to complain about the show. If you think it’s awful, then simply don’t watch it. And why watch a show that follows the books exactly??? What would be the point? In any case, I’m eager to see what’s going to happen with “Bilith”, Sookie, Eric, Tara, Pam, Lala, Andy, Jason, and the whole fantastic crew, both major and minor characters!!!

  19. I haven’t been on this site before, but I think it’s great for fans to be heard. I’m a huge fan of True Blood, but I have to say that season 5 was a huge disappointment. The series has strayed too far from the books that this show originated from. Most of the plots happening now were never in the books and are extremely out of this world. I don’t mean this in a good way. I sincerely hope season 6 gives fans more than 5 did. This next season will determine whether or not I stop watching the show for good.

  20. I love true blood. I’m glad it’s different to the books. Thou a lot of things that happen in the show I think are bits from the books. Some of the storys like Irene n terry could be cut out so we can see more sookie n Eric. Can’t believe bills lost his mind and is now the bad guy. Love Pam n Tara those smart arse iches. But can’t wait to see where it goes next season. Let’s hope Eric n sookie get back together. Hopefully will still be as good even thou there will only be 10 eps. But I still love the show and hang out for it every year.

  21. i am waiting for bill and sookie to get back together and be like they were in season 1

    • Unless someone invents a time machine and sends you back in time, that’s never gonna happen.

  22. when is season 6 starting ???!

  23. True Blood Season 6 will start on June 9, 2013.

    • I am a huge fan of both the book series and the show. Each are have excellent merits. But this last season almost lost me. The storylines seem to be jerky and disconnected. Some storylines could have been tighter, like the Terry PTSD part, the fae Claude, and OMG,the authority Lilith part. Less is more for mystery. As far as the love triangle…it was getting old. Don’t get me wrong it was plenty hot but more does’t push the story further. After all this isn’t Twilight! Anyhow, the season could be outstanding, ad it had been in past seasons with tight writing……otherwise I’m gone!

  24. Hmmm Well I have to say 10 or 12 episodes, thats not the issue. The crap writing a few seasons ago nearly made me stop watching this which is unfortunate because I am a huge fan. However, that being said, I think season 5 was pretty good because it had a feel of wrapping up some loose characters and all this extra terr. crap.
I think this Billith story line “could” be really good and the show seems to be going in a more focused direction leaning back towards vamps (not were-everythings). With some good writers, season 6 could be the best yet. Billith and Jess, Tara’s new role (which I finally like one they given her), the wolves coming together (will they be written out or allies and a continuing storyline), Sookie and this Warlow…could be good….dont mess it up with crap scripts.
Oh and imo less of Sookie, Eric and Bill together is a good thing, she can get a bit annoying.

  25. I dont care how many episodes there are i love True Blood and my hopes is that it will contine to go on and thrive. When it ends i will be so upset but i know it cannot go on forever.

  26. I don’t mind if they were to cut out things that drift too far from the story line Example: Terry and the lefrit story from season 5. I admit that these “off shoots” seem too long and you really just want more of Eric, Sookie and Bill. I have to say though, I absolutely LOVE Lafayette and I am SO pleased that they went away from the books for his character. I think that if they wanted to get things on an exciting track, take elements from the book with the Vampire conference. And of course, Quinn has yet to be seen. The story line with Warlow sounds like it could be quite exciting. If you are tired of watching this series then stop, but I hope that they don’t rap it up because I absolutely love this show. The actors are top notch, They have fabulous writers and always keep you guessing. I look forward to the summer not for the sunshine and beaches…but my biggest fix, True Blood.

  27. For us fans more is always better than less, I only hope that the 10 episodes keep us content for season 7 to come out.

  28. Too bad it’s gonna have less episodes. I actually wish it had 22, or something like that. Other shows have, and TB is the best, so why not?

To compensate, I hope they won’t take too long to start series 7, and, of course, increase it back to 12 episodes or (preferably) more.

By the way, another necromancer should show up… I really love them! They could explore their strange rituals, magic and ways a bit more. And I can’t stop wondering if Antonia would be strong enough to take control over “Bilith”!

    • i love this show so much i becime one with the characters. tb is so good i watched all 5 + seasons in a week or so. i may cry when this show ends. all the back stories and ction of the show are amazing and i crave more.so…

Dear actors, actresses, writers, producers, derecters keep the show going

      thanks,
      abby kessin

ps. bill and eriks love bits for sooky are so amazing, dont make it end thanks

  29. I really don’t care if they shorten it just keep it on the air and give me more Eric and Sookie love!!!! They have already killed off Jesus and he was the one of the best bit players. I do like the Pam/Tara ship that is happening. Just please don’t take away my true blood.
