True Blood Season 4 Teaser True Blood Renewed For Season 5; Plot Details Revealed [Updated]

Update (8/11): True Blood has officially been renewed for a fifth season. Look below for a press release regarding this announcement.

Love it or hate it, HBO’s hit vampire series True Blood shows no signs of slowing down – especially now that show creator Alan Ball announced today that he has just signed a new contract with HBO for another season.

Speaking at the True Blood panel for the summer Television Critics Association press tour, Ball laid to rest the rumors that fans have been spreading about True Blood coming to an end. Following True Blood season 2’s premiere, HBO quickly renewed the series for a third and fourth season. With that move, fans began to speculate whether or not season 4 would be his last.

Making his intentions clearer than ever, Ball stated, “I have no desire to leave. Doing the show is more fun than anything else I’ve ever done.”

Even though Ball’s contract renewal means that True Blood will almost certainly return for a fifth season, HBO has yet to officially announce its plans to renew the fan favorite series for another season. That being said, fans should take Balls announcement as a sign that the series will continue.

To add fuel to the proverbial fire, Ball also revealed that the writers are already working on stories for True Blood season 5. While Ball wouldn’t go into much detail, he did say that one of the stories would include viewers seeing how one of the vampires was made.

Updated: HBO has officially renewed True Blood for a fifth season. Below you’ll find a press release of the announcement.

HBO has renewed the hit show TRUE BLOOD for a 12-episode fifth season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.  Created by Alan Ball, the series will begin production of new episodes later this year in Los Angeles, with debut set for summer 2012.

“I am thrilled that TRUE BLOOD continues to enjoy a phenomenal reception from both subscribers and critics,” noted Lombardo.  “Alan Ball and his gifted team have devised the greatest thrill ride on TV.”

“I remain amazed and delighted by the enthusiasm of our viewers,” says Ball.  “I can’t imagine having more fun than this.”

Mixing romance, suspense, mystery and humor, the Emmy®-nominated show takes place at a time when vampires have come out of the coffin, and follows the on-and-off romance between waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).  Series creator Alan Ball (creator of the Emmy®-winning HBO series “Six Feet Under”) is also an executive producer of the show, which is based on the bestselling Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

Following the disastrous third season, which was rampant with poor character arcs and a compete mishandling of the series’ ever-growing cast, fans were more than worried about what they might see as the fourth season began.

Fortunately, it appears that Ball has figured out how to perfectly handle the fantastical storylines and numerous cast members – but does that mean a fifth season will do the same?

burned russell edgington true blood season 5 True Blood Renewed For Season 5; Plot Details Revealed [Updated]Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) is already confirmed for True Blood season 5

As True Blood settles in its pseudo-soap opera nature, many fans are beginning to wonder whether the series has become too fantastical. With vampires, witches, gods, ghosts, shapeshifters, werewolves, werepanthers and fairies (phew!), the series, as it currently stands, is much more “grandiose” than when it humbly began.

Of course, that can be said for many series. As shows progress with age, the storylines and characters tend to grow – and it’s typical for them to lose some of the audience that originally trumpeted a premiere. With Ball only slightly basing each season of True Blood on the books, we’ll just have to wait and see how the series makes its transition into season 5.

If anything, we can at least look forward to Russell Edgington’s return, as Denis O’Hare has already stated that the producers intend to bring his character back at the beginning of the fifth season.

  1. I’m over the whole Bill, Eric, Sookie thing! I was jumping up and down with joy when Sookie chose niether of them. Her Gran is right when she told Sookie being alone ain’t nothing to be afraid of…I have respect for Sookie again. Maybe she could start dating Alcide for a while cause there needs to be more of him. It just won’t wash if Arlene believes the spirit of serial killer Rene, when he told her Terry is bad… I love Scott Foley but his face is too fresh still in my mind from the excellent tv show the Unit. The story line there could only be some sort of emotional hell that Terry experienced in the war! I’m still dissapointed that lovely Jessica and beautiful Hoyt split, their relationship was so sweet in season 3. I still can’t grasp that Jezus was killed. I want more Pam more Andy more Laffy & Jezus and more Tara she cannot die!!!! I hope season 5 will have Tara turned into a Vamp hopefully by Eric, a very strong powerful Vamp with more of a lead role because Pam and Tara’s bitchen would be enhanced with Eric (their maker) in the middle… it would be fantastic to watch as it has been. I wonder if Jason will ever get a visit from Crytal with a litter of pups in tow, how good would that be? I love True Blood bring it all on in season 5 Russell the Rev anything and everything I want more bring on Season 5 cause waiting really does Suck.

    • personally i was lookin for more eric and sookie. i mean give him a chance. she gave bill a thousand. eric is a much more complex character. i say more eric!!!

  2. For those who think the show is too “fantastical” I suggest looking closer at the books the show is based on. There are more ‘were’ animals (foxes for example) in the books than the show. There are more witches, more state to state vampire marriages, more of everything. I guess Im just saying the writers get the majority of their ideas from the books. They arent simply adding new supernatural elements to prolong the story or attract a new audience. I doubt true blood will get many more fans but the fan base they currently have will stay tuned till the end.

    • ohh yeahh!!

  3. I seem to be in the minority on this one, but I rather liked season 3, and found season 2 somewhat lacking.

    • Me too I prefer season 3 to season 2. Season 2 took to long with Maryann Forester and her horn god; their was even orgy scenes!!!

    • same here season 2 was just a big orgie and season 3 seemed like they either didnt care or they were scared to open up about too much

    • I agree. I absolutely loved season 3 and thought it was the very best season. Season 4 was so disappointing.

  4. I agree that Qunn should be left out of season5 and Sookie and Alcide should hook up instead if she is going to be romantic with someoner else. If not with Bill then she and Alcide would be great together and more chance for her to have a regular life with him.
Alcide deerves someone he is such a good guy. Eric is just not as god invlved with Sookie as he is by him self with his ruthless power and his coldness and Pam. W#ith Quinn it looks like she just jumps from man to man but Alcide has been in her life for sometime so it would look more natural with him.

    • I agree as well. I think bringing Quinn in will just confuse everyone and there’s so much out there that’s still open that they can work with (werepanthers, fairies, etc)

      • I have read the entire series several times and Quinn was one of my favorite characters…. leaving important characters out of the tv series would be a huge disappointment to those of us who were fans before the show. Though this series hasnt done in the way of staying within the range of the books most of the changes are good ones especially Lafayette, but I personally would rather they stay a little closer to the books. Characters who are not even a part of the original works(not that we dont love them for the most part) are involved in the series why leave out the characters most of us are dying to see come to life

        • I totally agree with your comment. I am a Eric and Sookie fan, but I think leaving Quinn out of the series would be a really bad idea. I really liked him as a character and I think that he is an important character and it would be wrong to not have him in season 5.

          • Me too! I’m on tge Eric and Sookie bandwagon completely!!! Thier romance within the book series is amazing :) I can’t wait to see what the writers do with it since they have pretty much killed the entire 10th book lol

  5. just finished 4 season. Hope 5 season will be great :)

  6. I love them all keep up the good work

  7. I love them all like I said keep up the good work

  8. I love True blood it will be a bad ideal it if yo don continue with true blood. is great dont stop now we want to see more of true blood.

  9. true blood really got our attention

  10. we are waiting for season 5 hurry cant wait to see it

    • really i mean i watch all in a week more more!

  11. I cant wait for the 5th season. It’s like being pregnant, you got to wait 9 months.

  12. for anyone who read the books, are you as disappointed as i am that the show didn’t include the were-witches on V and the witch war? i think marnie was a weak character, where in the book she is still named marnie but goes by Hollow and is super powerful and incredibly evil. i like that they don’t follow the books on everything, but i just feel like that plot in dead to the world was much stronger and they should have at least made the witches more wicked than these meek little nerds in the show.

    • totally agree!!!!! I love that Lafayette was not killed off and the added bonus of Jesus… they strengthen the plot line but the witches in the book were much more bad ass!!!

    • i like them both but the books r TOTALLY different!

  13. i am disapointed that eric knew they slept together. he wasnt sopposed to no, and it was sopposed to drive him crazy in season 5 as it did in the book. but now he knows and sook brock up with both of them and now they have an opitunity to pull sook out of the love tringle for a while and give her a completly new, unconected to anything, boyfirend. aka. quenn. come on baby, nows your chance

    • I was very disappointed too! I hoped that Eric wouldn’t remember when he returned to normal. Also I think they should have slept together with Eric being himself. I was hoping she would fall for him and not the memory lost Eric. I still think they will be together. They work for each other.

      • she said she loved both sides of eric not just lost memory eric. pay more attention to when she turns them both down!

  14. I liked all the seasons, its a change from all the reality and True TV not to mention the other garbage I’ll take True Blood any-day. I’m also happy that Sookie choose no one I was kinda tired of the sex no matter how amazing it looked she was giving herself to freely.I will enjoy season 5 thank you True Blood for all your hard work the show is awesome.

  15. I am a late stage cancer patient who enjoys looking forward to watching true blood on hbo. Today i turned on my tv to discover that hbo (which i am paying for) is no longer available on my old fashioned tv because i dont have a special copy proof digital setup. Everything worked fine before. I cant afford a new tv, i have big medical bills. I feel that hbo is discriminating against me and others who cannot afford fancy new gadgets, all of my other channels work just fine. Guess i will cancel hbo and read the novels instead.

    • no no they r WAY different!

  16. The tv thing really sucks!!!! Idk why they would do something like that! I would definitely recommend reading the novels anyway they are amazing!!!

  17. I love true blood so much i don’t know what will go one with them season 5 but i have a very good suspension that Pam is the vampire that Alan said we will see the making of becuz think about it, we now how everyone else was made becuz we saw everyone’s flash backs but Pam’s

  18. I just hope that my main b**** TARAA!!!!!!!!! Is gonna come backk, I lovee that hoe. LOl :)

  19. I need to know when will show again for true blood: the complete fifth season thkx ya. Im forward for tht :)

    • me too

  20. I personally refer Bill for Sookie he has been there from the start and definetly has strong feelings for her hes “just wright for her” even if he is a vampire and cant give her the life she has always wanted. Alcide is too good, I mean him and Sookie together would be like watching Barney, all smiles, giggles and all the happiness the world has to offer. Eric is too high maintenance I only liked him without his memmories. I only watch this show for the romance so Im only gonna state the facts and say bring the LOOOOVE back.

    • Hey,we need to watch the 5th series in Italy..true blood can’t be stopped :) lot it so much!!!

      • I mean love it so much lol

    • eric is harder when it comes to feelings. he is complex much better cuz even as cold blooded as he is he fell for her. its so cute! perfect

  21. I just recently started watching true blood and could’nt stop. It is one of the best shows I have ever seen!! I will definitely be watching it for as long as it is on tv! Keep up the good work!!

  22. To be honest quinn should come into the 5th season, i loved the 4th season of true blood, but i agree that we need to move bit closer to the books sort of feels like it’s moving way off base.

  23. I think that eric and sookie shoud be together -they are so cute together .
and I hope lafayette is coming in season 5 hes such a funny guy .does anyone know when the season 5 is coming ?cant wait for season 5 :D :D

  24. I hate that its only a 12 episode season! I love it so much I wish it was 20+ episode season. So long to wait :(

  25. I hate that its only a 12 episode season! I love it so much I wish it was 20 or more episode season. So long to wait :(

  26. Okay…does anyone think that Pam will turn Tara? That would be a good way to do Pam’s flashback to her being turned. But, I am so SICK of watching Tara’s lip quiver every time she is about to cry. I honestly don’t think she is a very good actress. She is all wide eyed and shaky lips and s***** yelling and anger. I don’t think she balances out the show at all. I think LaLa would be a cool vampire..but I don’t think that will happen. Bill should be ousted as King. I mean, really…he has been just a liar the whole time. In all the seasons, he has shown that he keeps his cards tight to his chest and lies to vampires and humans so easily. Seems like the last 20 years have just been some kind of power play with Nan.
I don’t know what Sookie would even do with Eric if she got back with him again. What is she going to do….stand by his side at Fangtasia?
The council should make Pam the queen and oust both Eric and Bill for killing Nan. Pam is is very old and has her s*** together. That would be cool. Bill should go back to Bon Temps and Eric should move back in with Sookie…if the writers want that relationship to continue. Then Bill will have to see them together all the time and he will just be insane.
Protagonist for season 5? Maybe Russell vs Pam in some way?? King of Texas has to be quite the draw for other vampires.
Be done with the witches already. Ugh to them and the stupid werepanthers. Jason is just an idiot…and if the writers should have him grow up to make him interesting.
I would like to see Godric again…although I don’t know how the writers would fit that in.
Christopher Meloni??? That shall be interesting. Maybe he will solve crimes on the side.

  27. pleas till me when the new epsiode of true blood is on channel 4 please

  28. Please till me when the new epsiode of true blood is on uk tv on frreview please thank you very much

  29. I havent even read the books but LOVE this show and honestly the fantasy of more supernatural creatures make the show what it is . I’ve been watching the show since it began and im hooked on this show ILOVEIT!!! I really hope that Eric and sookie do end up together in the next season , i love them together!!! TEAM ERIC (lol) BUt this show is amazing and i cant wait for the new season to start :)

    • Ok.. Love the show.. Season 2 sucked just like season 4.. To me season 3 was the best!! I love Bill and Sookie!! They should be together again and stay together.. Love bad vamp Erik, but he sucks as an actor, and he was soooo boring in season 4 after his momory loss.. He and Sookie sucked together, and I didn’t like to see her jumping from bed to bed.. This series has been all about Sookie and Bill for me!! so yeah I want to see them together.. Love Pam, and bad ass b**** Tara, not gay Tara, although I like her look in Season 4.. I do hope she gets turned by Pam and becomes her b**** if she now is going gay. I loved Jessica and Hoyt together as well, she’s the one vamp I do like seeing horring around.. Sookie to me was a sweet girl, I hate that they keep putting her in everyones bed, and I’m sure next season she’ll be in Alcide bed.. sucks!!! I like him.. but he’s too nice, it would be a disaster..
      Team Sookie and Bill!!!
