Well, that didn’t take very long.

Heat Vision is reporting that executives over at Walt Disney Productions have already set in motion plans for Tron 3, a followup to their upcoming sci-fi sequel Tron Legacy.  Clearly hoping that they’ll have a mega-hit on their hands when Tron Legacy hits 3D and IMAX screens this December, Disney is wasting no time planning ahead for the future of the franchise.

Two of the individuals who worked on the Tron Legacy screenplay, Lost writers/executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, have officially begun writing a second sequel to the virtual-world pic.  No word yet on what the plot will entail, other than speculation from insiders that the two writers will try and round out the TRON Legacy storyline into a full-fledged trilogy.

Here’s a refresher of just what Tron Legacy‘s plot is, for those not in the know:

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey of escape across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

Stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde are already under contract to appear in any future Tron films, so expect to see the further adventures of Sam Flynn onscreen soon, should Tron Legacy be a massive hit in theaters.  No word yet on the involvement of director Joseph Kosinski or the original Tron star himself, Jeff Bridges, but that too is heavily dependent on the success of Legacy when it finally comes out.

This is a pretty confident move on the part of Disney however you look at it.  Tron Legacy has undoubtedly been an expensive project for The Mouse House, with a production budget at least near the $200 million mark of the studio’s recent 3D behemoth, Alice in Wonderland.  Remember that the original Tron came out in 1982 and was kind of a box office dud, grossing only $33 million.

Still, Tron has developed a solid cult following in the 28 years since it was released, and anticipation for Tron Legacy is pretty high amongst moviegoers overall.  Indeed, the Disney marketing machine has been busy promoting Tron Legacy for several months now, so clearly the company is doing its part to assure that they have a hit on their hands. And if the movie turns out to be good, wouldn’t we want to see another chapter on the big screen?

So what do you folks think?  Are you excited for the idea of Tron 3?  Or are you withholding judgment until Tron Legacy actually comes out?

Tron Legacy hits theaters in the U.S. on December 17, 2010.

  1. Tron 2 was a great success. From everybody I have talked to that have seen Tron 2, said it was one of the most exciting films they have seen in a long time. Great action, great soundtrack, amazing CGI affects. Kevin Flynn looked so real to me, you could barely tell it was animated. Tron 3 would be a an amazing idea. The movie ended with so much openings to a next movie. The movie had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Don’t get rid of the cast. They did an outstanding job.

    • Agreed, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Jeff Bridges made the film and it would be ruined without them.

    • Yeah, I agree. Tron 2 really grabbed my attention, and it held me there till the very end. I would love to see another Tron movie! Keep the charecters, keep the action, keep the suspense, and please please please bring back Tron! When he turned good in the end while he sank into the water I swear I almost burst into tears! I was super happy that he turned good but I can’t bear the fact that he might be gone! So, make a Tron 3!!! I bet it will be a huge hit.

  2. This movie was cool, saw it today in 3D and i will totaly see the 3rd one if it ever comes out. It would be awesome if they make it like the show code lyoko. :)

  3. Personally, Tron Legacy is my favorite movie of all time. I would recommend it to anyone, with thrilling scenes, this movie keeps you engaged and involved from beginning to end. I would also have to give credit to Garrett Hedlund, Oliva Wilde, and Jeff Bridges for their spectacular performance. Without their participation in the film it just wouldn’t have reached the incredible potential it has. Along with the amazing Daft Punk music, Tron Legacy is sure to be a huge hit in theaters across the country. Due to the wonderfully positive reaction from the public, we can definitely expect to see an equal quality performance in the soon to show Tron 3, and if we’re lucky, a Tron Trilogy. After seeing Tron Legacy three times in the theater I can strongly say that you will not be disappointed with this film. Big applause to Disney for their incredible thoughts on this film, we look forward to seeing more!!

  4. Tron 3 he’ll ya that was thee best film in 3d Now imagine the the 3rd TRON he’ll yea

  5. TRON Legacy was very good! I thought they could really expand on that world & it would be great if they made more TRON movies. It would be almost a waste not to. There is no other movie out there aside from the original. I did think they had some void areas of the movie where you waiting for something to happen, other than that, very exciting! I will be in line for the next two.

  7. ASTONISHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m speechless. I have seen Tron Legacy 17 times in IMAX. I will be taking my parents and neighbors tonight to see my new number one favorite movie of all time! I knew I was going to be swept away by the opening act of the film. Then the music behind the acts just blow you away!!!! Well Done Disney and Daft Punk!!!! What was so amazing to me is the Grid,ISO,The Program, The User, and the plot. Everything fell into place!!!! I love to play video games, but this is the first time a movie made me fill like I was apart of the video game!!! Once again Outstanding work Disney World Team and Daft Punk!!
PS: I will be waiting patiently for Tron 3 please!!!!

  8. I’m in love in TR2N. The Grid and the music composed by Daft Punk are phenomenal.
I just wished Disney would cheer up a little and let Sam and Quorra lock lips in the end?
Still the idea of TRON 3 excite me, please make more TRON sequels, Disney!
    I am an User.

  9. I’m in as long as Castor comes back :)

  10. Tron Legacy was brilliant, and I would definately see a sequel.

  11. I would live to see a new TRON movie to wrap it up. I think it should open up to Dilinger should make an appearance, so ahold Yori. I would like it to get into the Internet and create an uprising against the users but Jeff Bridges need to come back some how. But I’m undecided if I would like to see a Clu 3. But I would like to see A TR3N. I really hope they make it. :)

  12. I say they wait another 20 years dont rush it develope a good story and good look like the last two don’t just rush and throw something together

  13. Tron 2 was okay- the dialogue was awful. The story wasn’t bad, but I’d rather see $300 million go towards something else

    • Ryan, go to hell. Unless its your 300 million dollars, you have no say in what the masses demand.

      Tron 3 please!

  14. Personally, I think this movie was the best I’ve ever watched. Special FX are SICK, it’s just too good to watch.

    • Totally agree with you best movie I’ve ever seen!
      Tron: 3 please!!

  15. Tron Legacy was a huge hit and I loved it and I defiantly think they should make a Tron 3 i’m guessing the name might be Tron 3:Return to Tron or Return Of Tron(the orange guy who looked like Sam’s father.

  16. I’m like the biggest Tron fan ever… Really, I couldn’t be more exited about a possible “Tron 3″. Is it already an official project? Oh my god I really can’t wait… Is Daft Punk going to make the soundtrack again? Cause that would be so amazing… !!!!! :D I’m so exited!!

  17. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen, really looking forward to Tron 3!.

  18. I honestly just wish Disney would either confirm or deny whether there truly is another sequel in the works. I’m dying to know.

  19. I have seen tron legacy probably 10 times. I love the story, the cast and the music score.

I cant imagine a world where this sequel isnt continued i vote yes for tron 3
