TRON 3 Confirmed TRON 3 is An Unofficial Done Deal

Fans had to wait 28 years to see Jeff Bridges grace the grid screen once again as Kevin Flynn aka Clu in TRON: Legacy but it’ll be a significantly shorter wait for Disney to bring TRON 3 to the silver screen. Despite mediocre reviews, the 3D sequel earned over $400 million and so it wasn’t surprising to see TRON 3 teaser trailers added to the TRON: Legacy home video releases.

Always thinking in terms of branding and franchising, Disney had people at work on a story for TRON 3 months before Legacy even hit theaters. Back in April, director Joe Kosinski talked about some of those story ideas they had for the TRON: Legacy sequel and not long after, David DiGilio was brought in to pen the TRON 3 screenplay. As for the illusive “greenlight” and whether or not the cast will return, star Bruce Boxleitner aka Tron says it’s a done deal – His words.

Disney showcased TRON: Legacy three years straight at San Diego Comic-Con and during one of those three years, I had a chance to chat with Bruce Boxleitner who was ecstatic that he had the opportunity to return to that franchise after nearly three decades. It was there, inside of Flynn’s Arcade, where I raised the obligatory question of another sequel, a third installment, to which he smiled and replied, “wouldn’t that be nice.”

That was last summer and since then, the film made its run in theaters and is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. According to present-day Boxleitner, TRON 3 is more than just a “nice” thought now, but a certainty. During signings at Disney’s D23 event last week, a fan asked about his interest in returning for TRON 3 to which Bruce confidently replied:

“Oh, it’s already a done deal. It’s already in the works, my friend.”

And there you have it: More confirmation on what we already know. Although marketing expenses and a lengthy development schedule kept costs high for TRON: Legacy, it’s a brand Disney is not giving up on; It’s profitable and now it’s recognizable again. With processes and digital assets already created and refined, a sequel should be much more feasible and we can expect the entire cast to return.

Boxleitner continued, explaining that we can expect to see him back as Alan Bradley and/or Tron in 2013.

As for the story of TRON 3, by all accounts the film will pick up right where Legacy left off with Quorra (Olivia Wilde) and Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) together in the real world. According to the teasers, there’s a good chance we’ll see a few more connections made to the original TRON, with actors such as Dan Shor and David Warner potentially (and hopefully) returning to their roles of Ram and Ed Dillinger, respectively. Dillinger of course, was the villain of the first film and his son, Dillinger Jr., had a cameo in TRON: Legacy, played by Cillian Murphy, who many fans would like to see return as the villain of the next movie.

Expect official word on the next TRON movie around the time they start building hype for the TRON: Uprising animated a series next year, where Boxleitner will again provide the voice and likeness of the title character, Tron, joined by an all-star cast including Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens and Lance Henriksen.

TRON 3 will likely release in the fall of 2013.

  1. Great news about Tr3n! Can’t wait to see Uprising next year!

    • Tr3n? Doesnt work cuz it sounds like tren which is train in spanish lol

      • You know they’re gonna run with something cool like Tr3n. I’m glad to see Boxleitner signed on for Uprising. Really lends credibility to the project.

    • Tr3n? Fail.

  2. Yippee :)

  3. Huzzah!! Yay Bruce, you make me so happy by your words. 2013 can’t come soon enough!!

  4. Isn’t this kind of old to be posted now? He said this a full year ago…

    • This quote was taken from last week.

  5. close enough

  6. Excellent! Tron is a great classic and Tron Legacy was a terrific sequel! I can’t wait to see what the grid has to offer this time!

    • Kevin Flynn won’t be back though. Nothing they have talked about so far involves Jeff Bridges returning. So Kevin Flynn is dead. Blowed up real good at the end.

  7. I am pumped! I loved the 1st movie and the sequel was visually amazing-story wise was pretty good (not as bad as critics reviewed them). I usually read reviews of movies and look for all the “mistakes” that are mentioned and with Tron: Legacy (as well as Green Lantern) I found the “mistakes” to not be a big deal. I really hope Daft Punk scores this next one. Tron: Legacy has one if the best scores of all time IMO, and I would like something fresh from them.

  9. maybe f-ing Tron will actually be in Tron this time

    • Um, he WAS in Legacy.

      • for 2 minutes and under a helmet

  10. I finally saw Legacy last week and was underwhelmed by it. Not a bad film and it visually looked good (although the CGI young Bridges looked off), but it hardly was as groundbreaking or memorable as the first film. I will see the 3rd movie, maybe in the theater, but I hope that this film is better than the last.

    • I still don’t see how the first film was “groundbreaking”. Tron and TL are basically the same film: special effects driven, with no story. I enjoyed both films, but I would hardly say the first was a “classic”. Fun, but by no means memorable.

      • You’re too young to understand. There weren’t movies using CGI back then like that (or any CGI, really, for that matter).

        • Just b/c it somewhat pioneered today’s film where CGI replaces story doesn’t make it “groundbreaking”.

        • Ummm.. excuse me. Do some reading and you will find the FIRST Tron was one of the first two movies to use computer animation doofus!

          • I’m talking to Tim BTW

  11. New Hollywood oxymoron, made-up word of the month. “Unofficial Done Deal”

  12. Tron was the right hand for CLU in Tron Legacy, though he was corrupted. Hopefully we will see TRON redeem himself in Tron 3.

  13. How many qualudes have all of you taken? OMG.. the first one was a mind blowing game changer, cutting edge storytelling. That sequel was a farce. One more in SN endless line of crap. THERE WAS NO POINT TO IT WHATSOEVER. And don’t give me AI, come on that’s a crutch plotfiller. The visuals were devoid of even trying to be anything.. in order to come close to the first one the visuals would have to be Avatar x100. I notice no Jeff Bridges, he knows that was by a mile the worst thing he’s ever done.

Stop ruining cool movies with cheap cash grabs, you bunch of cokeheads..

And stop paying them, you automaton lude addicts

    • If you screw with Blade Runner its so on..

    • I thought Legacy was great.

  14. I never saw the first film, and saw ‘Tron: Legacy’ one week ago (for the first time) and I have to say… I was pleasantly surprised :)
It wasn’t “WONDERFUL”, but still a very enjoyable movie experience (if I had to, I’d definitely watch it again).

Nice to know a third movie is in the pipeline. And when 2013 comes – you’ll see me at opening-night of this movie.

  15. yepee!! loved tron legacy hope every1 comes back with their roles =D

  16. Now … how about Bruce and some Babylon 5 news?

C’Mon … you know he wants to …

  17. really don’t get why this movie got bad reviews, it was visually stunning, had an original script and the facial CGI was pretty awesome. the acting wasn’t terrible, it’s a solid B+ movie for me. critics can be cynical idiots.

  18. Sweet! more bikes please!!!

  19. I don’t like the wording of “Kevin Flynn a.k.a Clu”. Kevin Flynn isn’t Clu. Clu is Kevin Flynn and not Kevin Flynn.

  20. Like you all think you’ll make it past 2012.

    • We haven’t gotten past Oct. 21, 2011 yet. ;-)

      • October 28th is the date you’re referring to and no, the world is not going to end. Pity…

  21. awesome. and i’ve always liked ol’ brucey boy. seems really genuine and nice and he puts a lot of effort into promoting his films. hopefully tron 3 (i’m guessing it’ll be called “tron: evolution” or something similar [you heard it here first]) will tie nicely back into the original tron and they’ll leave it at that. it would also be cool to see flynn or other characters go back into the original tron world for some of the film.

  22. I think Cillian could enter the world of Tron as an all powerful virus and somehow involve the old MCP. Tron could then team up with Sam and Quora to save his world through a mass exodus to the world wide web which could act as a temporary safe haven until they figure how to enter the real world en masse. Or you could flip it with the virtual world becoming a place real world people enter to escape some sort of cataclysm caused by the release of nanites or something. One thing it does need is more light and color a regular PC has 32bits, I see no reason for eveything to be black and featureless. Although the visuals were amazing, they could still stand a small upgrade.

    • Dillinger can enter as some sort of modification of the ABRAXAS virus which came after the ISO’s. Kevin Flynn is still alive because the disc used to get sam and quorra our of the grid had his DNA in it. Maybe he can still be inside the grid but not out. Something like that should happen. and maybe his dad will come back as an upgraded Sark.

  23. I always thought that one or both of the Dillinger’s had something to do with Clu becoming corrupted in Tron Legacy.

  24. I’d really like to see the plot involve the Internet with “good guys and bad guys”. I mean, that’s really happening right now anyway. I’d like to see where somebody at Encom somehow recompiled the MCP, it’s meaner than ever, and that the good guys have to be super-innovative to bring it to justice!

  25. I’ll be waiting!!!

  26. Im glad that there making a sequel to tron legacy cause I like and own both the 1st and 2nd ones

  27. I would like to see the character who played Castor back and having shed the Castor act being Zeus again, and maybe as a bag guy who goes back to being good at the end. Dillinger Jr for the bad guy.
