This summer is just packed with high production value action films – so far we have X-men Origins: Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator: Salvation and coming soon is Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I Joe: Rise of Cobra.
Well I’ve got another action film that has managed to dip far below the radar: Transmorphers: Fall of Man.

That’s right, Asylum, the awesome studio that gave us incredible “mockbusters” such as: The Terminators, The Day the Earth Stopped, Street Racer, 100 Million B.C, Snakes on a Train, and most recently, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, has returned with the second installment of their prized Transmorphers series.

Unfortunately, Leigh Scott (who called the first Transmorphers a “cult classic” in his blog) did not return to write or direct this time around but fear not, Shane van Dyke has stepped in as writer and Scott Wheeler as director. This will be Wheeler’s second time in the chair after working his movie magic on 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth (not the version that starred Brendan Fraser). Shane van Dyke is no stranger at putting pen to paper either. He also wrote The Day the Earth Stopped and Street Racer.

Bruce Boxleitner, of Tron fame, Jennifer Rubin and Shane van Dyke all star in this story of robotic Armageddon. This time we see the story of how the earth became overrun with robots from outer space 400 years before the original Transmorphers. So this would make it a prequel of sorts. To get your juices flowing and help build your excitement, I have included the trailer for Transmorphers: Fall of Man below:
By now, you should realize that in this article I have my tongue placed firmly in cheek. Nobody that I know of would find the movies Asylum makes to be modern cinematic marvels, much less find them entertaining. These films aren’t really known though for their cutting edge special effects (did anyone else hear the modem squeal half-way through the trailer as a sound effect?), visionary directing or Oscar caliber script. What Asylum is known for, however, is their ability to release a “mockbuster” film on DVD at or around the same time as the big budget movie they are ripping off closely copying. Think of Asylum as the “Weird” Al of movies, without the parody.
Asylum isn’t immune from legal troubles with their releases either. Last year they were sued by Fox to prevent them from releasing The Day the Earth Stopped. I can’t help but laugh at this irony here. Maybe if someone had done the same thing to Fox we would have been spared their lifeless Keanu Reeves remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still as well.
So who is watching all these ridiculous movies and how does a company continue to produce sub-standard material on a consistent basis and still turn a profit if no one wants watch them? Well, IMDB shows Asylum with 179 movies to their credit since 1992. The answer might just be on Asylum’s website. Here is a quote from their blog/news section on MSvGO:
Almost as popular as porn…the trailer for Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus has become a small internet sensation. We’ve has almost as many hits as [Director David Micheal] Latt’s sex tape.
A quick Google search tells us the porn industry made $2.84 billion in US revenue in 2006. Now, I haven’t seen Asylum’s balance sheets but I’m thinking its WAY under that, but they could be onto something. All that money to make their films is coming from somewhere; so even though they constantly get horrible reviews and criticism, they continue to produce films. If anything you have to admire their tenacity. And don’t think Asylum is oblivious to all the negative feedback; just the opposite is true. They address all the negativity on thier website, and I have to say it’s quite amusing:
Every couple of months we receive an email that includes some variation of the following:
‘Give me back the two hours of my life I wasted watching your movie.’
We don’t mind negative feedback (it’s practically the only kind we get), but this one just bugs me.
For one thing, it’s not clever and it’s not original. In fact, dare I say it… it’s sort of a mockbuster of cinematic criticism. Second, our movies are rarely longer than 90 minutes (they just feel like they’re two hours). And frankly, they don’t usually get any better after the first 15. If you hate the movie and still end up watching the whole thing, I’m sorry… but that’s on you.
Well, I am willing to admit it; I enjoy watching these “mockbusters” but not by myself. I need to watch them with a group of buddies to truly enjoy it. I recently watched Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus with some friends and had rousing good time, even though the movie was horrible. (Debbi Gibson has the same look for concentration, concern, disgust, anger and sexual pleasure.)

So, do you have what it takes to stand up and finally admit that you both watch and like these type of movies? I’ll go first to make it easier for you:
“Hi, I’m Paul and I watch less-than-B movies made by Ayslum.”
Transmorphers: Fall of Man lands squarely on rental shelves June 30, 2009.

I was able to catch the first one on STARZ a few weeks ago and it was a fun film and wanna see this as well.
I work at a Blockbuster movie place and my store has every recent film that they have made over these last two years. It just blows me away that when a new title from them is released, people exactly come up to me and ask if we have any more copies behind the counter when they are rented out! I watched The 100 Million B.C movie, and after watching that I never want to watch another movie that is made from this ridiculous company. I’m was glad to hear that Fox sued them for their “Day the Earth Stood Still” rip-off. I hope Micheal Bay will do the same for their “Transmorphers” rip-off. lol
You kidding me? One of these days, I’m going to build up a library of just Asylum films and keep them hidden from view until such a time as a have a bunch of friends round, we get drunk and one of them says “hey… how about a DVD”.
Of course first I need to get some friends.
Oh, and as for your comment on their crappy special effects, did you see that trailer? Yes, the robots looked horribly fake, but hell if they didn’t look damn cool man.
Never heard of them before though I will say as terrible as it looks that Transmorphers looks better than the actual Transformers. SFX aren’t as good, but the movie it’s self looks like it would be better. Now that’s sad.
You want to know the worst thing? The Day the Earth Stopped is almost as good(or bad) as The Day the Earth Stood Still!
So are these released in theaters at all, or just straight to video? I’ve never heard of any of these, but the trailer for the “Transmorphers” looked a bit like one of those SciFi channel things they keep pumping out.
Weird that they can apparently maker money doing this. Which kinda makes me think “why can’t I can’t I come up with a soulless, schlocky idea and make a living at it”? Dang.
@skippy2057
“why can’t I can’t I come up with a soulless, schlocky idea and make a living at it”?
I think that’s called Porn.
@daniel f
when your not defending christian bale your bashing transformers… did anyone that worked on transformers do something to you personally. I know you hate it or dislike it or whatever and i know several others did as well but why bash it on almost every thread you comment on. Its almost as if you made the movie, bay stole it and made all the money whilst you made nothing. Did they turn down christian bale from that movie…? that you bash it so much…
@Joshi
Well played. Well played.
@skippy
These are all straight to video.
Vic
jago,
Some people just like to hate.
Transmorphers 1 was so bad that the studio and director knew about the audio syncs problems that occur for almost 15 mintues of the film and either couldn’t corrected or didn’t try to. Tey released the DVD with the sync problems. That to me is just piss poor laziness. Who cares if it sucks. At least attempt to produce it with some sort of self esteem.
If you must know…the producers were up against a deadline on the original and ended up releasing a version that was out of sync. The director had nothing to do with it and actually stayed up all night for weeks desperately trying to fix bad cgi shots (he ultimately failed). Later releases of the DVD were fixed.
Leigh Scott – If that truly is you;
I hereby retract my comment about the director, Leigh Scott, knowing about the sync problems and doing nothing about it.
I found your blog while research this story. It is now bookmarked and I plan on checking it out frequently. Your blog is very humorous and I loved the behind-the-scenes stories from the filming.
Why weren’t you asked to write the second one? You’re first story didn’t suck, your budget did
I believe I may own the only copy in Jacksonville of Transmorphers and I have the one with the sync problems. I wonder if the studio would replace it for me.
jago Bale’s a great actor and Transformers was a crap movie. It’s that simple. No secret sinister reason behind it. If you’ll notice this article is related to transformers so I had every reason to bring it up.
@Daniel f
yes this one was… not so much all the other ones you mentioned it. I still think something happened to you during a transformers movie that you mention it almost every other thread…
P.S. as “great” as an actor as bale supposedly is… he sucked in terminator salvation. At least for me he did.
That’s your opinion on both subjects. Like it or not it’s just as simple as I thought Transformers was the worst major blockbuster in the last few years and there are to many people that praise the idiotic-ness behind it.
as is bales performance in terminator salvation… i think the kid that played kyle reese could’ve done a better connor. If the first transformers played in the theater right now i’d rather watch that then that terminator salvation… bale with his batman voice made me dislike the whole franchise… his performance was terrible… “its as simple as that”.
P.S. i believe he sucked in tdk as well.. had it not been for the joker carrying him throughout the whole movie.
I can’t see how these people dodged litigation; lawyers live for suing people.
On the topic of Bale and Transformers; while I did enjoy Terminator Salvation, it had its problems but I wouldn’t say Bale’s acting was one of them. I’ve seen Bale in many films and he has talent. I blame McG for his wooden performance in this one.
Transformers had great special effects and some great action, but the acting and plot was horrible. To be honest, I have a hard time watching it again because of the bad acting and stupid humor. These are just my opinions. I know people who loved Norbert but I would watch Battlefield Earth before I watched that flim..I mean, film.
I watch all these films on the Sci-Fi channel. They are aweful but so fun to watch. That’s how they make their money back. They release them as DVD rentals, they are probably distributed internationally, and cable networks like Sci-Fi broadcast them. Remember the production values are so bad that they probably cost very little to make and therefore very cheap to distribute. Look at all the people in this thread who have seen them. They seem to get around.
@John “Kahless” Taylor
These movies don’t really steal anything from others. They just take the same idea and run in a different direction with it, storylines, character and names are totally different. Think of it like Deep Impact and Armageddon. Their entire company is built on the idea that they’re bound to make sales to people who confuse their movies with the others because the names are similar and the cover art looks like it would fit.
It, of course, also makes it’s money off of stupidly moronic “cult” idiots (like me) who buy them for the laugh factor.
There a place for these films in the world. It gives people a chance to break into the business that wouldn’t normally get it. Add it produces jobs. That’s always a plus.
Tongue in cheek…I sure hope so…otherwise why you wouldn’t reference Bruce with B5 LOL. Are the readers getting so young they think B5 is a vitamin now?
@Paul Young
Thanks for the retraction
I left the Asylum in late 2007 to set up my own production company. It wasn’t a totally happy parting of ways. I still have a lot of respect and personal affection for those guys. When you consider the number of companies and producers that go out of business and loose millions of dollars every year you have to give them a little credit for finding something that works. They also give a lot of young people their first jobs and they really foster hard work and reward loyalty. If anything, the big guys with the big bank accounts and the freedom to be more original should receive the venom.
And thanks for the note about the film being underfunded. Too true. I wonder how it would turn out if you handed out the script for TRANSMORPHERS and the script for TRANSFORMERS and asked film fans which script should be made for $200 million?
jago now I know your just a hater lol by saying his TDK performance was bad. Maybe some didn’t think it was amazing, but to say it was bad is just clearly bashing for no other reason to bash. That’s like me saying Transformers had bad special effects. It clearly didn’t. I can admit good things about Transformers no matter how much I hated it. The film had great special effects. Shia Labuff while being a bit over rated id dependable enough to always put on a decent performance, and Megan Fox is hot. Oh and it made a lot of money.
@Leigh Scott
Totally have to give the Asylum credit for finding their niche. Have they ever aspired to be something more than what they are doing? Some of their stuff is utter nonsense but they have alot of scripts that just need the right amount of massaging to work.
What is your production company up to now?
@daniel f
Actually its not about being a “hater”… I’m just going to balance out your hatred for transformers with how i personally feel about bales performance in tdk… Yes he was awesome in batman begins but tdk to me is only watchable more then once for ledgers performance. I fast foward through his scenes because bale doesnt even seem needed in the movie and batman in costume could’ve just been some random stunt double that could do a raspy voice. So again its not “hating” it’s a simple opinion… Plus my fav batman movies were the one with keaton not bale as i mentioned in an earlier thread.
So you preferred the poor set designes of the Batman 89 and the poor story quality as well as the cheesy portal of Batman ? It may not of been the 60’s version, but it was still very cheesy.
Bale’s performance was nearly exactly the same in TDK as it was in Begins only with more emotion. He cried a little more and was a little more angry. So how can you like one and not the other? Doesn’t even make sense.
@ daniel f
Well i guess they were poor for you richie rich but yes i’d prefer those batman films before these ones. The difference between batman begins and tdk “TO ME” is simply that bale seemed like an extra to me… Someone in the background. Even though i dislike the other batman movies ( forever and batman & robin) at no point did it feel like batman was an extra. Saying that transformers was utter crap knowing that not everybody is ” daniel f” and we all have different opinions is what doesn’t make sense.
I accept that some people like crap I know we all have different opinions.
