IDW Publishing is looking to create the comic book version of a summer blockbuster hit with Hasbro crossover event First Strike. The new comic is a followup to 2016’s Transformers crossover event, Revolution, which brought multiple, previously unconnected Hasbro characters together into one storyline. The event saw characters from G.I. Joe, Transformers, Micronauts, ROM and Action Man (a retooling of the British incarnation of the original G.I. Joe) united in one shared universe.
Now, First Strike intends to raise the stakes. The announcement came at Diamond Retailer Summit in Chicago this afternoon, where IDW Editor-in-Chief David Hedgecock revealed plot details.
CBR is reporting that while the upcoming crossover event looks to bring together the teams from G.I. Joe, Transformers, and M.A.S.K., First Strike puts an unexpected team in jeopardy. The event sees Baron Ironblood, the British version of the Cobra Commander, intent to destroy all of Cybertron, leaving the Transformers facing extinction. It’s up to the G.I. Joes, lead by Scarlett, and the Autobots, lead by Optimus Prime, to prevent that from happening. With such a large threat looming, the teams will enlist unlikely allies to aid them.
The new series is set to launch in August with the first two issues. The event is being written by IDW Transformers vet Mairghread Scott and David Rodriguez, with IDW Micronauts artist Max Dunbar handling the art. Covers for each issue will be illustrated by comic book artist Freddie E. Williams II, known for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The series is planned for six issues, releasing bi-weekly over a three month period.
As action-packed as the series promises to be, it also seems to contain a character study as well. When speaking with CBR, Hedgecock explained:
One man attempts to dominate, one woman stands against him. Watch as Scarlett leads her G.I. Joes on a daring mission to save all of Cybertron from their gravest threat yet. ‘First Strike’ is a fast-paced, hard-hitting, and deeply personal character story set against the backdrop of intergalactic war with all the giant robots, cyborg ninjas, and massive explosions you could ask for.
The mingling of the dynamic teams behind G.I. Joe, Transformers, and M.A.S.K. guarantees a frenetically paced, explosive story that promises to be a lot of fun for fans of the properties. It also sounds like there will be layered, personal stories ahead for both Scarlett and the Autobots, both with the weight of saving the Cybertronian race on their shoulders, and giving layers to the intergalactic war at hand.
First Strike will be released by IDW Publishing starting August 9, 2017.
