[Note: This is not a review. If you want to know what we thought of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, head over to our Transformers 3 review. If you'd like to discuss the film with others who have seen it, head over to our Transformers 3 spoilers post.]

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is now in theaters, and is THE movie event of the July 4th holiday weekend. There’s no doubt that a lot of moviegoers are going to be cramming themselves into cineplexes to see Michael Bay’s (alleged) conclusion to his Transformers trilogy, but the question is, with the options of 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D all on the table, which version of the film should moviegoers be shelling out for?

By now it’s no secret that I’ve personally endorsed seeing Transformers 3 in 3D, ever since I attended a 20-minute screening of the film earlier this month. So we can scratch one decision off this list fairly easily: if you plan on seeing Dark of the Moon in 2D, you might as well wait for home video or cable. If you’re heading to the theater, don’t cheat yourself: spend the extra money and get the full-on 3D experience.

But what about the extra, EXTRA, dough required for that premium IMAX 3D experience – is it worth it?

Short answer: it depends on the theater.

Look, you want to see Transformers 3 - and all its sick 3D action sequences – on as big a screen as possible. The visual splendor that Michael Bay has put into this film is nothing short of amazing (see: the base jump flight sequence). There are so many little visual details and vivid colors that this movie has a certain amount of replay value simply from the challenge of spotting all the fine details packed into every shot. (Good thing, too, because the plot is certainly not worth re-visiting.) So yes, a HUGE screen is the appropriate canvas for this movie to be painted on.

However, there is nothing exclusive to the IMAX print of the film that should make passionate fans of this franchise automatically disregard any other options. As I said: you want a big screen for this one, but it doesn’t absolutely, positively, have to be an IMAX screen.

Yes, IMAX screens are (typically) the biggest ones around, so some may say I’m splitting hairs here. On the other hand, IMAX screens aren’t always the sharpest screens around when it comes to picture quality. The Regal Cinemas here in Times Square NYC has a phenomenal RPX screen (Regal Premium Experience) that serves just as well (if not better) than older IMAX screens. I actually saw the preview footage for Dark of the Moon on the RPX screen and I vastly preferred it to the IMAX screen I viewed the final cut of the film on.

In the end, it’s really up to you, as moviegoers, to be savvy about the types of screens your local theaters offer. If you know a theater has a big HD digital screen and a sound-pounding system, where you can experience Dark of the Moon in 3D, then no need to go IMAX. However, if you know that your local theater has those mini-to-moderate-sized screens left over from the 20th century, then you may want to consider the upgrade to IMAX (or at least a better, more modern digital screen).

Finally, if you’re not a movie screen expert, here are a few guidelines that you should adhere to when choosing a theater – and don’t be afraid to question theater workers before buying:

  • Big screen (one of those “main auditorium” theaters they run the top-billing movies on each week).
  • Digital projectors (You want the sharpest picture quality you can get, so you can relish all those robot moving parts).
  • Premium sound system (You want to feel every explosion rattle your seat!).

In the end, Transformers 3 is a lame-brained summer blockbuster action extravaganza – so be sure that your choice in theater reflects that reality. If you wind up in a theater that has a screen insufficiently suited to the eye-popping 3D visuals – or a sound system more muted than it is mega, you’ll be left with a movie that has a thin story, little depth, and Michael Bay-brand humor. When buying into a spectacle like this, you (literally) want to get the biggest and best bang for your buck. So buy smart.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is now in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters everywhere.

  1. Good advice Kofi, I plan on seeing it in 3D.

Kudos to you for not fitting a GL slam in there as well. :)

    • I’ve made my peace with GL, INK. I hope the sequel is an improvement.

You won’t be seeing any slams from me on that film anymore.

      • I was just kiddin’ around Kofi.

  2. Can’t stand 3D, so I really don’t care too see this in that format, regular 3D or IMAX 3D. I’ll be seeing this in 2D on the big screen and will enjoy it without the eye strain.

    • Andy, i hate 3D too, but trust me. See it in Imax 3D. It’s not cheap post converted 3D like clash of the titans, this is full blown ass kicking michael bay transformers 3D. You’d be stupid to see it in 2D

      • I have a friend that cant watch 3D. He has tried on several movies (Avatar, Green Lantern to name 2) and he just cant ever adjust to the 3D. I am not sure what the problem is but he ends up getting a headache and he says he cant tell what is going on. He cant seem to achieve the relax factor required to enjoy the 3D experience. So my friend falls in the same category as Andy, he cant stand 3D. Too bad for him as I enjoy it.

  3. 3D works on TF: DOTM might be good.

I hope the film turns out to be great.

  4. Kofi, I am guessing you have been to the AMC Loews Lincoln Square IMAX.
Would you say this IMAX screen meets your criterion to view the film there?

    • @Robert Palmar

I actually live up the street from the AMC Loews 34th st theater so I saw it there. It’s a big screen, just not as crip as that Regal Times Square RPX – I fully recommend that screen.

      • Thanks, Kofi. Much appreciated.

I live in the west 70′s and the AMC Lincoln Square is the closest IMAX
which is probably identical to the AMC Loew’s 34th street screen.

And on Regal Times Square RPX, I have never been there
yet and I’ll have to check it out after what you said.

      • Live on west coast of Florida in Ft Myers. Have a brand new (few yrs old) Regal Cinema here at Gulf Coast Town Center. The have it in 2d, Real@3D and IMAX 3D. How do I know what screen they are using. The IMAX screen they do have I know is bigger than standard 2D (HD- screen) and its way louder. But the question is how do I know if they have a RPX screen or not? The kids making minimum wage trust me won’t know. Anyway if finding this out prior?

        • Try calling the theater during regular business hours and ask to speak with the manager. They might be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction.

  5. I saw it in IMAX 3D at it was amazing. The IMAX screen was one of the best in the world. Being from Michigan, IMAX is kind of our thing.

    • Michael, which theather did you see it at? The one in grand blanc?

    • I’m sorry guys but IMAX is now officially Wichita Kansas’ thing. We’ve got the World’s largest genuine digital IMAX. The largest IMAX screen in the USA. It has beaten out every IMAX in North America in attendance and sales of almost every movie in IMAX since December 17. And you might say that Sydney has the World’s largest IMAX, it is indeed but it only gets the title of retrofit for the newest digital IMAX tech. For the first couple of months people from all over the world came to watch a movie on that specific screen. The Warren World Class IMAX opened up December 17 with Tron Legacy in IMAX 3D and let me tell you I went to see it there 3 times. I’m going to see Transformers: Dark of the Moon tomorrow and it’s going to be freaking awesome.

      • “largest genuine digital IMAX.”

Which means you got the biggest 2K pixel screen, which is no way 15/70 IMAX which is 6120×4500! Some Sony 4K digital projectors are superior to IMAX Digital, look it up…

  6. 3D was incredible for this film. At one point, I thought somebody decided to stand up in front of me and block my view, but then I realized that that was just Shia LaBouef standing with his back to the camera. Talk about immersion…

  7. I will be seeing it in 2D, as with all films.

    • Then your not seeing the film the director intended you to see. You will miss a lot. This is a 3D film, period.

      • Agreed. Movies shot for this purpose are best in the format intended. Post conversions need to left alone.

  8. Don’t know if this was addressed or if i’m crazy but why is the inception score in this movie?? not sure if hans zimmer did it but like..Why? Why? Why?

    • Inception score? Which song? Which scene?

  9. For you transformers people, I’m not watching this but am all for people enjoying what they love the best way possible. If it’s available I only watch movies here in New England on the Imax theater in Jordan’s furniture Reading, MA. Subwoofers in tempurpedic seats, and an 8 story high screen. Just a suggestion to anyone in the area. It’s worth the drive since the whole complex has much more than just imax. I wish I saw Avatar in that theater.

I’ve been spoiled ever since First movie I saw was Tron in that theater and refuse to watch any movie that’s offered in Reading in a regular theater.

  10. The Imax in Madison, WI is the best but if it’s sold out we got a Marcus Ultra Screen to back that up. Spoiled with films here. And a Sundance Cinema for the Independents.

  11. Ugh, I was going to watch it on a 2D screen, but now I’m not sure anymore.

I’ll think on it a while longer and make a decision by Friday. I’ve never been to an IMAX showing. Knoxville has an IMAX screen but I have no idea how good it is and whether it’s actually worth the extra money. From $7.50 to $16.50.

  12. Can anyone comment on the IMAX screen at the Ft. Lauderdale Science Museum (been years since I’ve been there) or the fake IMAX screen at the Muvico in West Palm Beach Cityplace? I’m wondering if either is worth the trip. . .

    • Maybe this will help? http://www.disinfo.com/2009/05/imax-or-lie-max/

      • And I’d think if you already knew the West Palm Beach one was a fake IMAX screen, I’d doubt that one would be worth the trip.

        • Now I remember calling the West Palm theater once, and assuming it was fake based on the size they told me the screen was. I should check again, since that map marks it as “unknown.” Anyway, the West Palm theater (which is in a regular multiplex) is much closer to my house than the Ft. Lauderdale one (like 15 minutes vs. 45 minutes), so the closer one might be worth choosing over a regular Real3D theater (5 minutes away) if I decide that the drive to Ft. Lauderdale isn’t worth it. :)

  13. 3D all the way. I saw the trailer in 3D and it was nothing short of amazing. This is what movie fun is supposed to be about!

  14. thanks for the help!

  15. Interesting link here. It did not help me with my situation (marked by a blue ?) but maybe it will help others wondering about their own IMAX theaters. It differenates between the real ones and the “fake” ones. Green ones are real, the red !’s are fakes.

    http://www.disinfo.com/2009/05/imax-or-lie-max/

    • Thanks for the link, I had no idea some IMAX aren’t real. Good to know though the ones in my area are real :)

  16. IMAX Digital is at best a bright 2K pixel projection while original IMAX film projection is 6120×4500 pixels. It’s kind of a strange thing because Sony makes a 4K projector which some non IMAX theaters use. Never the less IMAX Digital is no way 15/70 IMAX. For the theaters that can display the difference, films like “The Dark Knight” had something to offer because they had at least 6 and by some accounts 30 minutes shot in native 15/70 film. It seemed to me it was the first 6 minutes that really popped in that movie. I think that’s probably the correct run length. But even if Bay used 15/70 film, the limitation I believe will be in the projectors, the conversion process adjusts the final output for them to IMAX Digital standards.

Now with IMAX digital cameras I don’t know what your getting but I suspect your getting hosed at the box office. It’s cheaper to see the film in a digital non IMAX theater and I believe your experience is going to be very nearly the same. The slightly enhanced screens can’t compare to the 72×52 ft screens that use to be the minimum IMAX standard so it’s not as immersive as the standard IMAX. Plus if you sit closer to perhaps compensate for the smaller screen, you’ll probably notice the dreaded screen door or jagged pixel effect! Sitting further back reduces the immersive experience so you’re just as well off in the digital projection venues especially if they’re using the 4K systems…

  17. the decision was made for us by disney. here in louisville they won’t let go of the imax screen to stop playing cars 2 and let transformers on it.
i have seen that this is a real problem in several states.
some problem between disney and paramount.
most comments say the theaters may try to squeeze transformers into the imax rooms between cars 2 and harry potter.

    this blows.

  18. All well and good unless you physically or medically cannot see 3D. They can sell all the 3D stuff as much as they like but unfortunately for people like myself, whether we want to see it or not, its not a choice we have.

Saw it in 2D last night and had to suffer a soft non digital projection. Not the best picture, guess they saved the digital for 3D only at my local (20 miles away!) multiplex.

Loved the film though, anxiously awaiting the blu-ray now so i can see it all crispy!

  19. It’s an improvement over the second one, which isn’t saying much, but still is a very fun blockbuster filled with action, destruction, romance, robots, and Michael Bay once again letting loose on all the special effects and action there is to let loose. Good Review! Check out mine when you can!
