‘Transformers 5′ May Not Arrive in 2016; No Director Changes Planned

transformers 5 release date Transformers 5 May Not Arrive in 2016; No Director Changes Planned

Transformers: Age of Extinction opens in U.S. theaters today (read our review) – and just last week at the CineEurope conference in Spain, Paramount revealed that Transformers 5 (subtitle TBD) is being planned as a 2016 release for the studio. That might not be the case after all, however, as Age of Extinction producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (who’s also been involved with every installment in the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises to date) informed us that the next Transformers movie hasn’t really even started to take shape yet - suggesting a 2016 release date might be (overly-)wishful thinking, on Paramount’s end.

Age of Extinction introduces a whole new set of human characters and Cybertronians alike, with the intention of kicking off another trilogy of movies set in the Transformers live-action universe. Michael Bay has directed all four of the installments in the franchise thus far, but in recent weeks he’s been decidedly noncommittal on the issue of whether or not he will continue on making Transformers films in the future. Rest assured, though, more adventures with the Autobots and their peers should be arriving in the years ahead – the continued box office domination of this Hasbro cinematic property guarantees that much.

During out interview with Bonaventura, we asked about what the current plan is, regarding potential directors for the next two installments in the second Transformers movie trilogy:

Screen Rant: Early on when we were reporting on the development of the film, it was reported or speculated that Michael Bay would come back, do this installment, but set up the franchise to hand off to possibly another director or creative team - to kind of take it for the next two installments. Is that still the plan or are you guys kind of rethinking that? Where are you in the stages of development for Transformers 5?

Lorenzo di Bonaventura: I think it’s one of those classic things where somebody reported that and suddenly it became our plan. We have never discussed the idea of how to hand it off, honestly. It’s not like we don’t think, well what happens if Michael doesn’t do it, of course you do. But we want to keep Michael on this, so we’re not spending any time worrying about who could come in. We’re trying to figure out how to keep him going and keep him excited.

Michael Bay filming ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’

Whether you love Bay’s Transformers movies, love to hate them, or love to sit back and watch people from both sides duke it out in comments sections online, there’s no denying that his “robots in disguise” blockbusters are often impressive in terms of sheer technical craftsmanship – the result of a lot of hard work by many people – and that, at the end of the day, a Transformers movie without Bay just wouldn’t be the same (for much better or much worse, depending on how you view it).

Indeed, the time, money, and effort investment required to make just one of Bay’s Transformers films is pretty intimidating – which helps to explain Bonaventura’s response, when we asked about development on Transformers 5 and the prospective 2016 release date target:

Screen Rant: Recently we learned there’s a potential 2016 release window that you’re eyeing for the next one. Where are you guys in preparing that film?

Lorenzo di Bonaventura: No, that’s not accurate. Somehow that gets reported, it’s made up by somebody and then everybody thinks it’s true. No, I think we’ve been doing these on different cycles. I think the same thing is going to happen this time. It’s an exhausting process to make these movies. The scale of them is so enormous. It really does tax everybody and our tendency is to finish one at a time, recover, and then begin talking. And we’ll do the same thing this time.

Obviously, things could change in the future, but right now it seems as though Transformers 5 isn’t likely to arrive by 2016. The first three Transformers installment were released two years apart each, but three years passed between Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction – in part, because Bay took a break to go shoot Pain & Gain, in the meantime. Indeed, if Bonaventura and his fellow producers want to keep Bay around on future Transformers films, then they might need to give him a break to go off and make something else (like maybe that WWII thriller or the Ghost Recon movie he’s been developing) – then he might be more enthused about returning to the Transformers universe again… and maybe once more after that, for Transformers 6.

Paramount’s already got a couple of big franchise sequels in the pipeline for 2016, including Star Trek 3 (which may serve as the studio’s big summer release that year) – and while there’s still room for Transformers 5 to claim a good spot in, say, June or July of 2016 (May’s pretty crowded), there are far more spots in 2017 for the studio to choose from. In fact, before the Paramount announcement last week, rumor was that Transformers 5 will arrive in 2017, based on a leaked Hasbro presentation – and that was only a couple months ago, at that.

The short of it: 2016 isn’t necessarily the ideal time for Transformers 5 to arrive, no matter how you cut it – be it from a business perspective or creative perspective, as Bonaventura points out. Things can change pretty fast in Hollywood, though, so stay tuned for updates on the situation in the months ahead.

  1. Why would they change director when Michael Bay is doing what he does best for these studios and that’s making a boat load of money. But if they did change it than they would sucker all of the people who hate MB to go watch it, Only to get the same ridiculous poorly told… Lol either way they win.

  2. The review section was too long to comment in so I’m here.
I was pleasantly surprised with AoE. Last night I was almost dreading seeing this today but in my honest opinion, plot wise, this could be the best yet.
The storyline wasn’t half bad. Not sure what the naysayers were expecting. As I said I was assuming this would be terrible, but once the Auto-bots appeared I was game. Ben’s review was good and the rating was warranted.

    • SPOILERS

So somewhere in that 2 hour 45 minute run time was not one, but TWO good movies. Lockdown was awesome, and the most compelling Transformer so far. The story should have been cut to focus on him, have the dinobots at the end more-or-less like they did, and drop hints about NSI making tranformers, and have Stanley Tucci’s character in the movie.
Then in the subsequent movie have that one follow NSI much more closely, with the CIA angle continuing, and the reveal of Galvatron. It really would have been a great two-part narrative.

  3. Not gonna lie tho, I missed my boy Sam. Anybody catch LaBeouf’s voice used when Bumblebee 1st spoke?

    • Really missed Sam.!! And tbh they should not have replaced Megan :/

      • +100

  4. Hey Vic, is there any way to delete my earlier comment? I don’t wanna spoil this for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

    • Scotty – which comment? Unless it’s already been deleted… I don’t see any spoilers here.

  5. There are explosions…OOOPS! Spoiled that part too. Darn, my bad.

  6. 2016 is away too crowded with big-budget tent pole films. If Paramount execs are smart, they’d wait for 2017 .

    • Ugh! Typo. *way. Not away.

“Edit button, edit button. My kingdom for a edit button”

    • Or they are waiting to see how this movie does.

  7. Deadline is calling T4 having a mid-90 million opening weekend.

    T1 – 70 million OW
    T2 – 108 million OW
    T3 – 97 million OW

If that mid-90 holds for T4 (or it’s lower) franchise fatigue may be setting in.

    • T4 has made over 130.1 million… As of today

  8. I don’t give a f*ck about TF series, but Michael pls! Make Bad Boys 3 before TF5. We need it… One R-Rated bad ass all out action movie like two Bad Boys before. Then you can make as many TF movies as you like…

  9. They better make a Transformers 5. The way the 4th one ended it seems like Bay should and has to make another one. Otherwise the Sega doesn’t seem complete. I love these movies. The Transformers movies are my favorite, and I would hate to see it end in a uncompleted series. I would love to see another one. In the last one the talk about the Creators. I want to see how the Prime defeats them and what they would look like.

    • dude transformers 5 should obviously happen the way galvatron left he still alive so theres no way they not gonna make TF5 just because. I love Jazz Ironhide and Ratchet just why kill them off

  10. This was one of the best transformers movies yet. It was the compelling love that Optimus had for his auto bots and some of the humans such as Mark Walhberg. In all Paramount should wait until 2017. But in all a great movie really happy of how it turned out. Keep it up guys cause your bringing me back to my childhood where I would watch the series. Loved it an love this franchise. LOVED this movie

  11. Loved the OST’s. Good work on the soundtracks Imagine Dragons and it was great to see the dinobots. At least they got picked up from the cartoon. All in All, a good movie and time well spent. And yeah the creator talk is awesome !!

    P.S I think TF2 was the best.

  12. Just shoot Michael Bay and piss on his corpse already.

  13. Just watched t4 this was a epic movie can’t wait for t5 Optimus prime bumble bee an grimlock were awesome I hope the Dino’s come back in 5 to make the movie that much more awesome keep up the good work an I really hope to see a t5 and please bring back sam, whalberg, and some of the cast from the first 3 movies that would be great to see how it would play out!!!!

  14. they already did a mess up the seris of transformers.the first 2 was aswome.but they changed to much.ideea was very good for 3 and 4 but, they changed and replaced to manny actors.now the seris is bassed only on SF not actors like was in 1 and 2.very bad, they dont have even one small idea how much they lost because of thouse changing every time when a movie comes out.and the distance bettwen years is to big.2 years are a loot of time

  15. Transformers 5 should have more autobots and a huge autobot. I also really want to see what will happen when octamus prime meets his leaders.

  16. I like all the transformer movie’s just wish the actors lebouef and megan were takin away bring them back fox is so hot!!!!!!

  17. huge fan of transformers,, however the next installment should lead toward hot rod. you cant have galvatron and no rodimus!!

  18. what would hot rod look like in real life transformers 5?

  19. hi guys if you have a ps3 addme im Ride16553 please come Transformers 5 2016 or 2017 i wont just 1 trailer of Transformers 5

  20. Paramount knew bay was leaving back when transformers 3 came out. Bay even stated he will help with TF4 but was going be his last. SO If Paramount said 2016 the date TF5 movie gonna be released best to believe it will arrive during that time. I have no worries

  21. I am a diehard fan of TRANSFORMERS movies released so far. From its 2007 release followed by Revenge of the Fallen,Dark Of the Moon and Age of Extinction, all these movies gave me and also the viewers a positive energy to love the AUTOBOTS serving for precious human lives while also love to see the counterpart i.e the DECEPTICONS for spreading tyranny. So we look forward to see more and more adventures of the cybertrons arriving on planet earth with their different missions.

It was seen in the last part of TRANSFORMERS 4 when GALVATRON sees OPTIMUS PRIME from far and says “WE SHALL MEET AGAIN PRIME,FOR I AM REBORN”….So it definitely creates a huge impact on the viewers to have patience and wait for its next part which is TRANSFORMERS 5.

I must say that the movie of transformers must never come to an end….it may be because of my anxiety to see more and more movies of TRANSFORMERS.

So its my utmost request to kindly not think of putting an end to TRANSFORMERS as it is loved and liked by many viewers worldwide.

  22. I have a cool upgrade design for Downshift. I have owned a Supra for 13 years now.
