With 2016 winding down to a close, movie fans are beginning to look ahead to the slate of tentpoles for 2017. One of the biggest films on the horizon is Transformers: The Last Knight, the fifth installment in the $1 billion franchise from director Michael Bay. With the project now in post-production, composer Steve Jablonsky has started to work on the musical score, and it was recently confirmed that both John Goodman and John Tuturro would be reprising their roles from previous movies. Fans have also gotten a look at a filming device called the Room Roll, which allows actors to go upside down.
Back in October, Bay mentioned that a teaser would make its way online by the year's end, and now it would appear that a trailer debut is imminent. The first preview for the film has now been classified.
The news comes courtesy of Trailer Track, who say that the trailer runs for just over 2 minutes and has an "IMAX in Theatre" label. This would indicate that it will be unveiled in special IMAX locations first, before being released to the general public. Moviegoers may recall that last year, Zack Snyder put together an event to share the initial look at Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, so perhaps Bay has something similar in mind. Since there's no release date mentioned, it's difficult to say for sure. One would think the trailer will come out within the next week, since Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will play in IMAX starting on November 18, 2016.
As for what will be shown, viewers should not expect anything too revealing given that this is a teaser. It will most likely establish the bare bones outline of the narrative, which has so far been kept under wraps. If it's anything like the first trailer for Transformers: Age of Extinction, fans will get basic setup for returning hero Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and a series of out-of-context action shots. The Transformers 5 teaser being heavy on spectacle wouldn't be surprising at all; not only is Bay behind the camera, since it will roll out in IMAX theaters, the marketing team will probably want to take full advantage of the premium format.
Like so many other studios, Paramount is getting in on the shared cinematic universe game, with a Bumblebee spinoff and Transformers 6 coming through the pipeline. A writers room is in place to plot out a course for the future, which could go as far as 2025 if everything comes into fruition. By now, viewers know if Bay's take on the robots in disguise is for them or not, but there are reasons to be excited about what's in store. With more Transformers movies in the works, there will be opportunities for other filmmakers to come in and play in that sandbox, which could prove to be very beneficial. Time will tell.
