‘Transformers 4 & 5′ Shooting Back-to-Back? Jason Statham Starring?

Published 4 years ago by , Updated August 3rd, 2013 at 9:12 am,

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner’s very recent announcement that Transformers 4 was being actively developed came as a shock to…  no one, essentially. The “fourquel” has been all but assured ever since the third installment, Dark of the Moon, grossed over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office this past summer.

However, reports are now in that Paramount and Hasbro officials are developing plans to shoot Transformers 4 and Transformers 5 simultaneously – and already have an actor in mind to replace Shia LaBeouf as the human star of the series.

Variety says that the fourth and fifth Transformers movies – which Dark of the Moon scriber Ehren Kruger is said to already have concocted a storyline for – could be filmed back-to-back, as a cost-cutting measure. The site also reports that action maestro Jason Statham is being considered as the potential new lead for the franchise, but that an actual offer has yet to be made.

If this all sounds somewhat familiar, that’s probably because you’re remembering the rumors from a few weeks back – ones claiming that Fast and Furious 6 & 7 could also be filmed simultaneously, with Jason Statham joining their cast(s) in a supporting role.

However, while nothing is set in stone for either high-octane blockbuster franchise, it’s certainly feasible that Statham could ultimately be hired on for both the new Fast and Furious and Transformers movies. The latter project isn’t expected to begin principal photography until either late 2012 or early 2013 – a date that could (theoretically) allow Michael Bay to first direct Pain & Gain, should he decide to reprise his role as the Transformers series’ helmer – so there shouldn’t be too much overlap between the production timelines for either of the aforementioned pairs of sequels.

UPDATE: Here’s the word from Michael Bay himself, with regards to Transformers 4:

I am currently not talking to Paramount on T4 and T5 despite reports. I’m looking at a lot of possibilities coming my way right now weighing options. Most likely going to be doing the low budget Pain and Gain, a true story crime thriller. It’s a very quick shoot and quite funny. Also just finishing the 3 disc set of the Transformer trilogy.

This is all strictly speculation at this point, seeing how Statham has not yet (by all accounts) officially been made an offer to appear in either action movie series – not to mention, it’s not known whether or not he actually wants the job(s). One thing you can count on, though: if Paramount can devise a practical plan for how to shoot the next two Transformers movies at once – an approach guaranteed to be more cost-efficient – the studio definitely will.

One last thing – we’re gong to go out on a limb here and say most fans would consider Statham as the human protagonist in the new Transformers movies a significant “upgrade” from LaBeouf. We could be wrong, though… 😉

RE-UPDATE: Statham spoke to MTV recently and indicated that he’s not actually been approached to headline any future Transformers movies. In the actor’s own words:

“You know, I don’t know how those things start. You read them. Someone told me about it. [But] the internet is a dangerous place. [laughs] There’s a lot of stuff out there… I’ve got a lot of stuff in front of me, but Michael Bay is a talented man. This last [Transformers movie] just made a billion dollars around the world, so people like his films. He’s a talented man.”

We will keep you posted on the status of Transformers 4 and 5 as the story develops.

  1. I will definitely will be looking forward to this!! Statham is an upgrade for sure, no more high pitch screams from shia.

  2. This is getting ridiculous…why not just combine both franchises and just be done with it already…

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this actually happens, what with all the crap Hollywood puts out these days…I mean seriously, who can’t see Vin Diesel behind the wheel of some old muscle car about to hit the NOS button and suddenly gets thrown out as it transforms in to a huge robot…would you REALLY be surprised???

    • That sounds like a bad ass idea! Rest assured that if I ever make a film, yours is the inspiration 😉

Besides the aforementioned, yes, it is getting ridiculous and very boring.

  3. I liked the Transformers films (especially the first one) but I dislike too many aspects of it! Ironhide’s death was uncalled for. Optimus looked like a deer in headlights in trusting Sentinal. Shia laBeouf killing Starscream?! Seriously?! I just hope they leave my autobot faves out of the franchise. Namely, Prowl, Hound and Mirage.

    • Starscream was a coward and he died like one, fitting death indeed.

    • Hate to break it to ya, but Dino (the ferrari) was Mirage.

  4. A fourth and fifth film! Jason Statham! Yes … yes. This is a great opportunity.

  5. Transporter series, the One, Crank series, In the Name of the King, etc….watch these movies and then you’ll agree that putting Shatam as teh lead is downright ridiculous.

Problem with this franchise is that it should have been over with after the 3rd film BUT they left the ending completely open. So another alien robot is going to come to earth and try to take over the world…again….havent seen that before in this franchise

    • Jet Li was the lead, not Statham.

  6. Why am I not surprised? The fact the Statham is dating Rosie-Huntington Whitely is no doubt a major factor in their decision to try to get him on board to star.

  7. The part about Statham makes this seem fishy. I mean, he JUST happens to be dating the new eye candy Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (lucky dog). Anyway, I think they should do a two-part story and bring in Unicron.

    • New eye candy? Are you serious? I couldnt manage to get past the idea that she should be behind glass at an aquarium somewhere. Those were some seriously effed up lips.

      • To each their own. I found her to be a much more attractive and a much better actress than Megan Fox.

      • Yeah, we were all talking about those lips in the theater. I thought she had an allergic reaction the whole time.

  8. So what is going to come of Sam? Are they going to explain it? Did the Autobots and Decepticons suddenly forget who he is and decide to just let him live a normal life?

YOU CAN’T DO THIS! At least kill the character off! That would be the respectable exit. Self sacrifice for Optimus Prime’s protection. SOMETHING!!!

    • THIS!!! Even if people don’t like Sam, you can’t just leave out the lead without any explanation. With Statham dating RHW, this seems like a very convenient rumor.

  9. although i’m a big fan of statham… replacing shia in transformers is a huge mistake ..he is sam witwikie and no one else can replace him… thats the problem with making too many sequals of a movie it tanks when the lead is recasted… leave shia in the transformers movies… as for fast n furious.. as a supporting character statham would be great… just dont mess with the original cast look at what happen in fast n furious tokyo drift that garbage should’ve been scarpped in production.. case in point on messing with original cast … leave transformer alone with lead man.. if have to cast statham replace dumell or diggs not shia …

  10. And what part is he going to play, the grownup Sam!!!!!!!! Or is he going to be a Navy Seal/Army guy..WHAT!!!!! come on..really…and further..no girlfriend or parents please..cutdown the cheesy jokes just alittle..but, love hearing that T4 and T5 or possibilities…Can’t wait to hear about the updates on this story

  11. I think it’s a great idea! I love Jason Statham!! But whatever happened to the Allspark being inside of Sam? I thought it could never be destroyed. Just transform.

  12. Like the first one, hated the second one, and the third was better than the second but by that time it feels like the same recycle crap.

I tried to watch the 3rd on dvd and I was bored. “I’ve seen this already…”

  13. My issues is… what Decepticon is left? You can do the Unicron saga…. But another resurrection of Megatron into Galvatron? Really? And even though Shia is as dynamic of an actor as my dog is when it wants a treat, you can’t just give HIM the Megan Fox treatment and allude to why he’s gone… he’s driven the damn franchise thus far.

And Statham? again REALLY? You already have Lennox and Epps characters in this film (assuming that they’ll return), now you need another fast car driving super bad ass ex ninja government operative in the cast? (I only say that cause that is the character the Statham plays in EVERY movie…. I swear that “In the Name of the King” I thought he would hop into a 67 Camaro)

    • Lol

  14. jason statham taking the lead in the franchise would be fantastic. no idea how they’d weave him into it … but love the idea!

  15. Bay would problably waste Stath by casting him as a sterotype cockney geezer transformer for a few secenes around the destruction of London, in an overhyped re-hasing of mud n flap vs the pyramid in tf2.
Get a new helmer, get a new cast (maintaining the prime robot voices…..see what I did there!) and make the darn series a little darker with less parents getting the way. Overlong close ups of generic hot lead female can stay, but you can’t go wrong with the ‘Darker is better’ route. A big reveal that apotomus has an all to shady past that suggests he’s not a squeaky clean as we all think he is would be nice.

  16. How about no human leads? Leave the robots alone. Shia is annoying, Rosie Huntington-Woody-Harrelson-Look-Alike is useless and added only to have an “attractive” “woman” on set, and.. you know what? Just NO. What’s Jason Statham gonna do to save this franchise? Turn Shia’s girly screams to manly screams? Drive Bumblebee like his Audi from the Tranporter movies like Bumblebee needs driving? And who’s gonna be the fcking villain? And which major city are they gonna destroy next? Oh lemme guess.. NEW YORK. Great.

  17. This would be awesome no more annoying screams from Shia.. Statham would be a perfect choice

  18. This is totally the wrong way to go. I think that people forget that this is a KID’s toylina and cartoon show. They were both silly but i enjoyed them anyways. A lot of my childhood was dedicated to watching the shows and playing with the toys. That being said i am completely satisfied with all 3 movies. Get Darker? Really!? It would just look out of place. The reason the imature jokes are needed there is because this is based on a child’s franchise and therefore a lot of it’s audience are in fact….chidren. The movies are just good popcorn fun to be enjoyed by people of all ages, specially kids, much like the tv show and toys.

I have no problem with Jason Statham, i think he plays the somewhat cocky badass very well, but all of that would just seem out of place with giant robots fighting in the background. What is he going to do, roundhouse kick a robot in the face?

  19. Why not leave Transformers alone and make a Voltron movie? Cast Statham in that.

Personally, even though the current format makes a TON of money, I would like to see a complete recasting for TF4. Just make a new story, one that doesnt involve Sam. TF is good for what it is but there are huge gaping problems with every movie. The main one being that the women in combat get cleaner and cleaner with each movie. How can a woman wearing white look so clean while soldiers wearing darker cloths look like they just got out of battle…..when they all were in the same battle??

  20. LMAO. An upgrade indeed but still LMAO

  21. Jason Statham joining Transformers 4 & 5 would be awesome and a great additon to the series.

Maybe have a backstory that Sam was killed after trying to protect Bumblebbe from being crushed by a 100 foot Decpetion, at least Shia LeBeouf wouldn’t scream like a girl when everytime he says “NOOOO!” in the movies.

My own idea how Statham can join the Autobots:

After years Sam is killed by a Deception, The Autobots are kepted secret by the goverment ever since and are forgetton but when a Deception arrvies on Earth and kills a goverment offical with a important sercet then the Autobots are called back in action to stop the Deception before the machine reveals that the Deceptions all will arrive on Earth for Megatron’s failure.

Without Sam’s help, The Autobots are forced to team up with a every skilled but hardcore soldier (Jason Statham) who has a bit of a bad attuide working with a partner.

Soon Statham and The Autobots soon realises this might be not only be a city’s battle but maybe the whole world’s.

  22. We want Dinobots in TF4 and 5! This what Grimlock would say: Me GRIMLOCK want to be in the new movies and kick some decepticon asses! I knew Bay would return! I hope this time less human drama more Transformers!

  23. I hate to say it but Sam should stay in the series with Carly, only because that’s how it was in the G1 series. And they had Daniel. Megatron could come back as Galvatron, why not? Don’t forget Cylonus, Scurge and the Sweeps. Yes that would be from the animated movie but it’s somewhere to go with the franchise. And if they went that way perhaps we would also get more Autobots like Cupp and Hotrod. But I too would love to see Hound on screen finally along with Tracks!! Tho they’d have to find another alt mode for Tracks seeing as Sideswipe was a corvette. Heck bring in the Insecticons too! See there are possibilities but they just have to make them work.

  24. What a great idea this is! Statham really needs to branch out from the action movies he’s done recently (although I have enjoyed each one).

    Go Statham, GOOOOOO!!

  25. Sam Witwicky was victim of murder when Carly Spencer and Mikaela Banes in 2012 after the two women discovered he was committing adultery on an episode of Cheaters. The two females are now incarcerated in Federal prison. There, that solves what happened to Shia, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Megan Fox.

As for Statham, that is an upgrade, but I’m not sure if he is the direction the series should take. Side note, what ever happened to Rachael Taylor’s character in the first movie (Maggie Madsen, the analyst recruited by the DOD who discovers the mysterious frequency that leads to the discovery of a hostile agent hacking information from the mainframe of Air Force One)? I thought her role was way more important than it turned out. Maybe they could bring her back for the 4th and 5th movies instead of bringing in Statham.

  26. You can’t continue the same franchise without Sam Witwicky. It just wouldn’t make any sense. One moment he is the human with the biggest connection to the transformers and the next he has has no association with them? Either recast Sam or just reboot with Jason Staham as a new character. Can’t be a direct sequel or any type of sequel to the original three.

  27. i would really support jason statham being in transformers and fast and furious. it would be cool to see that

  28. Hellyeah

Statham would be awesome! But I’d prefer him in FF6 more.

  29. no statham just no. Love him, but no. You need a new young lead. Statham isn’t old but he isn’t exactly benjamin button either. Use someone like Logan Lerman. I don’t care if hes percy jackson, he’ll find time. And if Paramount has the nerve to pair up carly with statham, I’m going to shoot myself.
