Paramount finally confirmed the inevitable this week, as the studio announced that both director Michael Bay and an official release date have been locked down for Transformers 4. The movie is already being trumped up as part reboot, in the sense that it will exist within the continuity established in Bay’s previous Transformers flicks, but is also going to “clean house” and remove certain characters (primarily, human players) who played prominent roles in the original TF trilogy.
New insider reports on the fourth Transformers movie also claim the film will be a “direct” sequel to the third installment (subtitled Dark of the Moon) – and that certain thematic elements from the previous movies will also be left out of the loop, this next time around.
A source for Badass Digest is claiming that Transformers 4 is going to be “a straight up sequel” to TF3 where the plot is simply no longer told from Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) perspective – unlike the previous three movies. Whether or not any of the additional human characters from prior installments – like John Turturro as Agent Simmons or Tyrese Gibson as Sergeant Epps – will likewise not be returning, is another matter.
UPDATE: In a recent interview with E! Online, Josh Duhamel – who played Major Lennox in the first three Transformers movies – indicated that he didn’t anticipate there to be any returning human cast members from the previous films in TF4. To quote the actor directly:
“I don’t think anybody’s doing it. I know Shia [LaBoeuf]‘s not doing it. I don’t think Tyrese [Gibson] or Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] or anybody else is doing it… I haven’t heard anything about it. They haven’t called me.”
Turturro’s being brought back in particular seems all the less probable, given that the BD insider is also saying that TF4 will mark a drastic cutting-down, in terms of the over-the-top (some might say Looney Tunes-style) comedy and juvenile humor present throughout all three prior Transformers movies.
To quote the source directly:
“Michael [Bay] realized ['Transformers 4'] needs to be more like the last hour [of 'Dark of the Moon'].”
Obviously, that doesn’t mean the entire film will be constructed like Dark of the Moon‘s climactic third act (ie. feature nonstop carnage and real estate destruction) but that TF4 will be aiming for more of an overall serious and “adult” tone. So don’t expect, say, a hyperactive Ken Jeong to tackle anybody while they’re in the bathroom – or jokes involving peeing robots and Transformer “cannonballs” – in this new installment.

That said, just because Transformers 4 is being fashioned as more of a serious blockbuster about giant alien robots engaging in intergalactic warfare, don’t expect it to abandon all sense of being light-weight cheesy entertainment and aim to be a purely darker and grittier variation on the Transformers mythos.
Peter Berg’s Battleship, for example, is also being propped up as a more serious take on a Hasbro property, but not one that forgets its duties as a piece of popcorn fluff. Even other impending franchise-revamping sequels that maintain a narrative continuity with their predecessors (Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) aren’t going to be so straight-faced as to not include any hammy one-liners or similarly silly elements in the mix. Expect Transformers 4 to follow their example.

We will continue to keep you up-to-date on the status of Transformers 4, which is slated to reach theaters on June 29th, 2014.

Omg just stop Michael bay! Your movies were terrible to begin with, and this one is gonna be the same crap as the other three. If he makes it more about the humans than about the transformers this movie is gonna suffer just as bad as the others, cuz honestly I couldn’t have cared less about the people. I went to see THE TRANSFORMERS not Sam dicklicky and his retarded problems no one cares about. Michael bay says he’s gonna make this one more serious? Bulls***! He’s gonna do the same as he did with the others. Thus this one will be just as crappy.
You’re not too clever are you..? The article said it’s going to be more about the robots than the humans, and that there’ll probably no Human actors in the film.. I suggest reading more carefully of just fuc*ing off in the first place, next time.
Maybe YOU should read what it says before insulting someone else’s intelligence. It doesn’t say there won’t be ANY human actors…but that it is doubtful that any of the actors from the other films will return.
I didn’t say that it wouldn’t have ANY human characters, i said they were taking out the human characters, meaning the ones from the first 3 movies. Even in the cartoons there were some human characters, it just wasn’t mainly about them.
hey if u have nothin nice to say dnt say it all I luved his movies and. Tons of my friends did to so cut ur crap
Listen just for a minute that’s your opinion.for the record l for l’ve been a fan of the franchise long before it became the movie.if don’t Bay look up hasbro transformer in the net.then you finish you comeback again you say what you said again.don’t get me l’m not attacking you l’m just raising my own opinion that all
transformers 1-3 all are very good ass movies if you ask me. their is only on thing i dont like about michael bay.. that is why didnt he let the twins fight in tf3. why is he going to let sam leave the set of transformers 4.. if sam wants to feel like hes needed in the move then. michael come use the power(thats in sams brain). he could use that to have some help the auto bots get more autobots that need engon.. like jet fire.. sam should be in the movie most def.. autobots rule
dumbass roberts right read the article
I have been a fan of the Transformers series FOREVER. I think that you need the humor and human characters to make it a good movie. It is you’re decision on how to make this movie but i think it would be better if it was like the other ones
I’m a teenager, and i LOVE the Transformers movies. when the first one came out, i saw it 6 times in the theater and i wathced it everyday after school. AND i memorized it. (also the 2 and 3 one…)(i know, im a geek) i used to write freking books about hat i wanted the next movie to be about. i have a whole theroy about how all the transformers are related… But i really wanna see Elita-One. i wanna see what Prime would do… lol.
Whatever. I just wonder when they are going to introduce a badass chick transformer?
DID YOU HEAR? THAT THEY ARE BRING EVERYONE BACK AND MAKING THEM BRAND NEW
COSTUMES AND SUFF. AND ALSO BRING BACK THE AUTOBOTS THAT DIED WHICH ARE
IRONHIDE AND JAZZ. AND OPTIMUS PRIME WAS KILL BY MEGATRON ONCE AND FOR ALL.
I actually watched “dark of the sh*t” last week finally… Seriously don’t bother. It’s mildly better than the 2nd movie. And I mean just mildly… It’s still absolutely one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
The fact that these f**kheads at Paramount are still going back to Bay to do the 4th for a “darker” installment just re-inforces how much f**king stupidity is in Hollywood. Just re-boot the f**king series back to the original cartoon movie story line with a Nolan-esque approach. Bam. They’ll make more money than the Bay movies combined. (If they haven’t already ruined the ethos for the fans…)
Sorry about the anger but Bay has killed my childhood love for all things Transformers and now he is just rubbing salt in the wound.
i personaly loved the first 3 films and couldnt pick a better one of the three, and would b quite happy for all the characters to return with a few more and a new story line…
I loved the first 3 movies I am absolutely obsessed with them. I love the action, I love the comedy, I love the interaction between the humans and robots I love it so much. Never really watched it as a kid got more interested when it got better into a real life movie with no animation! I love it and love Michael Bay. But please dont make a 4th one that doesnt have any of the humans in it. The only reason I liked it and all my friends loved it and we seen it theaters quite a few times lol is because it was funny, lots of action, lots of army like guys
and a lot of guns and blasting and everything I love in a movie. If its just about the robots guarantee that im going to wait for it to come on tv. im not wasting money to see something that sounds boring. I wanna see all the human actors back and ready for action and some robot a** kicking!
Also on another note if you didnt like the show or the movies why are you even reading this anyway? Have no life….I guess so….seems like it….shut up or put up.
i agree with you about the human guns and army men and stuff but if its going to be a lot about robots, then they can make amazing weapons to. we might have to wait for it when it comes out but i know I’m deffinetally going to watch it. I LOVE ALL HIS TRANSFORMERS MOVIEs!!!
TransformersLover your so wrong about the franchise, I grew up on watching the Transformers. Humans have a very little influence within it.
They are there, sure the films are good but not great, the only humor in the films is all foil. Watch the first Transformer show, there’s humor in it but at least no one is taking about pissing.
People, let’s be intelligent here. To hippopotamus prime, you obviously just came on here to talk s***, because you obviously didn’t read the article. As for everyone else, the movies were good but not great. If you hated the movies, then by all means, don’t watch them. If you’re upset about them taking out the humans, deal with it, because that’s what Transformers is about: Transformers, not humans. I think the Transformers movies have a lot of potential, and the fact that they decided to take out the stupid comedy is a great thing, because it makes the movies seem silly. I think it’s obvious why people even went to see the 3rd movie: To see robots fighting. If that’s what is gonna make up most of the fourth movie, then I think people should be satisfied.
im guessing the 4th one will have galvatron(megatron upgraded) and unicron in it
That would be awesome to see Galvatron! And they should have dark energon.
I’m not going to lie I’ve been a fan of the franchise since Bay has started producing the movies. I believe if he doesn’t include a few of the old cast members like Tyrese Gibson, Shia Laboeuf, Josh Duhamel, or John Turturro then TF4 will not make as much money as the other 3 movies. Don’t get me wrong I’m still going to go see Transformer 4 when it comes out to theaters but I don’t think it will be as good as the other ones. What I think made the past 3 movies good was because the cast and because there were some funny scenes.
If MB follows the advice and notes about making it more like the last part of DOTM, 4 will do just fine.
However, I hope the Turtles movie doesn’t get ‘effed up. Make the ooze alien. Not the Turtles, man. Leave my toitals alonez, snort.
Not sure it will be watchable. Seriously it sounds like an adult cartoon.
i only like the transformers movies because they have the name transformers. otherwise, these movies are horrible
who agrees with me?
i love the first three i wouldnt bother with a forth if sam witwiky isnt in it as his goofy moments are what make it so good and his relationships with bumblebee and optimus. why change the format when people already love the goofy comedy to the movies it dosent make sense why bother it will be a completley different film all together and wont make sense if was a sequal.
leave it at three movies!
Finally. Sam needed to go after the first one. Hopefully there will not be a ’4′ in the title. I had hoped Bay would not be there either but hopefully this one shows more promise. Human characters will be needed and should be utilized.. but not with their side stories as last time.
Oh, and if they do bring any characters back, the only one worth watching is Dutch from Dark of the Moon. He was awesome, and the only character who was actually funny.
Been thinking about this, plot ideas etc, and I had one that seemed to make sense to me. In the first movie Prime spoke about the cube, and how it had been around since the dawn of time. And how it created worlds and filled them with life. Well what if in the new movie we traveled further back, to a time before Cybertron? And witness it’s creation by the Allspark? But what if Cybertron wasn’t the only thing created back then by the Allspark? What if another world was given life? But not life as in inhabited speices of robot, but a life within itself? I think you all know where I’m going with this? Fastforward present day – It has been many years since the Decepticons were defeated, and ther autobots, with the help of N.E.S.T. have established a permenant resident, a city in which to set uo a base of operations. All the while remaining ever vigilent, Because Prime fears their greatest threat is yet to come.
ok? seems to be an ok idea…
Thank you, just throwing out some thoughts
Like this title
Transformers – Rebirth. A fitting title if Galvatron is to be in it
omg i hope they make it im 15 and i love Transformers sooooooooo much hehehe Fangirl *yaoi + transformers = <3* ^^
I never understood how Hollywood can mess up shows(80s) that already have great stories to them. Before this fourth movie gets too far into development, I think the whole writing team should sit down and actually watch the transformer animated movie and part of the series after it. Congrats for not putting so much emphasis on the humans, however; I get the feeling that Bay is going to pull stuff out of nowhere which will kill the image of Transformers even more.
I think they shouldnt because why rehash the old stuff i love the new aproach these movies took. sure when i saw the first movie i was like WTF what is this!? this isnt the transformers i remembered but then after watching it for a while i was totally hooked and i dont think that they can do something as great as the old show so i dont think they should be taking allmost anything from it
I can’t wait for TF4 if you don’t like the first one then why did you go see the other 2 I think they were all awesome I can’t wait till Number 4 I’m sorry I think bay did something right he made over 1.5 billion dollars from the first three so there must be something there bring on TF4
I liked all 3 tf movies but haters gonna hate…… I wish they would bring jazz back(what’s crackin b!tche$)
whatever happens in the upcoming films for once iwant to see megan fox return for the franchise. b coz i’m obsessed with transformers and saw each film round about 10-15 times.i like the first one very much then the third.i also like the the contact betwwen linkin park and paramount pictures and like all their songs for the film transformers.
unless Bay and Fox patch things up between them I don’t think she will return, and even if she did her role would not be a pivotal one. Main reason being her character was never the love interest that Sam was destined to end up with, Karly was. So her departure from the story was alway inevitable. Every fan knew that from the start, they just didnt want to believe it lol. I do agree with what you said about Linkin Park to a degree. “What I’ve done” and “New Divide” are awesome songs the one from DOTM however wasn’t good. If they do get the Park crew to provide the main song the TF4 I hope they will go back to their “One step closer” roots
Hey don’t listin to the people who r asses and r not likeing ur transformers movies, to tell u the truth I LOVED them and want you 2 Make the 4th one because I REALLY injoyed them 3. So please make transformers 4. Rock on and ps If you comenters dnt have nothin nice to say don’t say nothin at all and get a life STOP being immuture
This is a page where people can voice their opinions is it not? You can’t expect everyone to feel the same way you do about something, and as long as people refrain from personal attacks or profanity I see nothing wrong with their negative comments. Now, calling people who don’t agree with your opinion “asses” is hardly a mature thing to do now is it? Prehaps you should take your own advice?
Did no one ever tell you that when someone goes spends money on a movie, they have a right to praise/criticize it AND the director/actors? It’s the viewer’s right because after all, the viewer is who they make these movies for. Get over the fact that someone didn’t like something you did and stop insulting them like this.
I really wouldn’t want to watch it without the previous actors. It really wouldn’t be the same movie without them.
Same here because now we have grown to know the characters and it would be feeling weird like it did a little in the 3rd movie
willy, my favorite, shock wave was one good creation, those of us who watched the cartoon megatron used to turn into a Gan, but anyway i love the movies 1to3.let me try to say something prime should say” and then the end came, when we the autobots and the human allies had to part ways, good and bad times we shared in the war against the deceptacons, we finally defeated megatron and all who wanted to destroy the human race. But just as we thought it was all over something unknown heat planet earth….
I think Micheal Bay should focus on bringing back Megan Fox..A scene with Megan and Rosie throwin down would be prime..The movies do got great effects, but why not save the money, dig a hole n fill it with jello..
Check out Michael Bays website. It has information on it but not much, But apparently from what i heard, Shia LaBeouf wont be doing it unless he changes his mind. Jason Stathman could take over his role if he doesnt appear and i dont want that to happen EVER!!! Also, the information on TF4 is all fake. Josh Duhmel, Tyrese Gibson are doing it again. They have recieved information on them because Michael Bay and Tyrese Gibson are good friends AND Rosie Huntington Whitley could do it. (I’m a girl aswell and i’m a obsessed with Transformers)
P.S Right now, Michael Bay is directing another movie, so their aint much information on it.
I think there’s no problem about previous characters being removed. For as long as the TF4 producers can fit in the new characters, or maybe the same characters but different actors/actress i guess, to the Transformer Logic, environment, etc(you know what i mean..
) they made.
To show the difference of “cartoons/anime series/movie”(Whatever you call it) from “Real Life Movies”(i’m pretty weak with words but i hope you get what i mean), cartoons can be done/made/produced simply with the use of imagination and drawing materials(or whatever thing animated cartoon shows/movies producers use) while “Real Life Movies” producers, either it is original or “based” on a comic, cartoon series or whatever, works hard to make it as real a possible( if the movie has certain action or character animation that cannot be done or dangerous to do in real life) with the use of cameras and computers(for animation). Just look at the big difference of the two.
Don’t just flame or say bad things to a semi-”cartoon series based” movie because it failed to “perfectly” meet your expectations that the movie should be exactly as the cartoon series plot. Certain tweaks and adjustments are made so that movie producers would be able to deliver a very close real to life experience to the viewers.
In some of the Transformers Movies, there are scenes that I was able to identify to be a work of animation but still the plot is still very good and very cool.
Hoping for TF4 to be another excellent movie.
personally i think they should focus on cybertron and the war there
I dont because i think it might become a little to close to the games then and that would fck it all up
