Transformers 4 Movie Logo Rumor Patrol: New Transformers 4 Robots & Story Details Revealed

WARNING: Should this rumor turn out to be true, this article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Transformers 4. If you are worried about potential spoilers. Turn away now.

For months, we’ve been hearing that Transformers 4 will be taking Michael Bay’s blockbuster franchise in a new direction – and likely serve as the first installment in a new set of films. So what exactly does this fresh franchise direction entail? A leaked (albeit unconfirmed) plot synopsis suggested that human scientists had successfully reverse engineered the Transformers – opening the door for wild alterations to the robots-in-disguise format.

However, Paramount Pictures was quick to “debunk” the leaked plot – which, as anyone that follows pre-release rumors is aware, doesn’t necessarily mean the details were inaccurate (the studio could simply be spreading misinformation to distract from a later reveal). The only official information available focuses on the various human characters (their actors and backstories) -  without addressing the Transformers 4 storyline or its cybernetic organism cast members. Now, a new rumor could confirm long-running speculation about the upcoming sequel – including the addition of several fan-favorite characters from the G1 series.

Despite an enormous $1.1 billion global box office haul, Transformers: Dark of the Moon was saddled with a lot of franchise baggage – the wandering “boy and his first car” journey of Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), a reduced and downright underwhelming role for Megatron (one of the franchise’s most iconic Decepticons), as well as an increasingly tangled mythology and series storyline, among others. Given that the stars of the film are the giant robots, not their human counterparts, it’s no surprise that the filmmakers are reorganizing the property and changing course.

NOTE: The rest of this post contains potential SPOILERS for Transformers 4. This is your final warning, if you do NOT want to know key (albeit rumored) details of the film, turn away now.

Begin (potential) SPOILERS for Transformers 4.

According to an exclusive report from JoBlo, Transformers 4 will include several iconic characters from the classic cartoon series, including the Dinobots and Galvatron – names that should be familiar to anyone who listens to our Screen Rant Underground podcast. For over a year, we’ve been speculating that Bay could easily incorporate both the Dinobots and Galvatron – with a longterm goal of introducing planet-sized villain Unicron (who was voiced by Orson Welles in 1986′s Transformers: The Movie). To listen to those Transformers 4 discussions, check out podcasts episode 57 and 84.

The new JoBlo report sites a “reliable source” who gleaned info from a “recent marketing event.” According to the source, Decepticon bounty hunter Lockdown (a character that was featured in the 2007 Transformers: Animated reboot) pilots a ship full of “decommissioned Transformers” – including the Dinobots. The post suggests that Optimus Prime (once again voiced by Peter Cullen) and Bumblebee then find a way to revive the Dinobots – including T-Rex Grimlock and Pteranodon Swoop. Other Dinobot team members Slag (Triceratops), Sludge (Apatosaurus), and Snarl (Stegosaurus) could also appear in the movie but were not specifically mentioned in the news post. Even though beast-like creatures have been fighting on the Decepticon side in the prior three installments (Ravage, Scorponok, and the Driller) bringing the Dinobots into the equation would certainly help freshen up the format.

That said, a less-believable element of the rumor suggests that Optimus Prime and Bumblebee will literally ride Grimlock and Swoop, respectively, into a Hong Kong battle. Swoop flying Bumblebee into a conflict could be cool (and make narrative sense) but picturing Optimus Prime saddled on the back of Grimlock in T-Rex mode is much harder to believe – especially since the Autobot leader had his own flight capability in the last two entries. Yet, given that the information came from a marketing event, it’s possible that Hasbro is preparing toy sets (or other marketing materials) that partner Dinobots with Autobots – even if those exact pairings do not play out in the actual film.

In addition, the rumor also suggests that while Megatron may have met his end in the Dark of the Moon finale, the character will be resurrected as Galvatron in Transformers 4. Certain versions of Galvatron exist as standalone villains but most iterations of the character have some connection to Megatron – usually as an evolved (bigger and more dangerous) version of the Decepticon leader. In the 1986 animated film, it was Unicron that built Galvatron (who retained Megatron’s memories and personality) – in exchange for destroying the Autobot Matrix of Leadership.

Here’s how the scene played out in the 1986 animated film (FYI: Leonard Nimoy voices Galvatron):

Unicron could be introduced as a looming threat down the line (much like Thanos in The Avengers) but it’s much more likely that if Megatron/Galvatron has a role in Transformers 4, he’ll be brought back to life with a new form (and different voice actor) - by using the same technology that allows Optimus Prime to reanimate the Dinobots. Perhaps a relic that once belonged to Unicron? Of course, that’s entirely speculation at this point.

Last up, the JoBlo report suggests that both Hound (an Autobot scout often portrayed as a Jeep Wrangler) as well as a disgraced “samurai” Decepticon (who seeks to regain his honor by helping the Autobots) will both be added to the robot roster. No further details on either character were provided, but coupled with Dinobots and Galvatron, it certainly sounds as though Bay intends to significantly diversify the line-up this round. Despite a few slick moments, like Sideswipe splitting Sideways in two, most prior Transformers action has been fist-to-fist or blaster-to-blaster battles, the addition of a long range scout, samurai, and dinosaurs has the promise of mixing things up (not to mention sell a lot of new toys).

Still not sure how to feel about live-action Dinobots? Check out the trailer for last year’s Fall of Cybertron video game to get a taste of how cool Grimlock and his team could look on the big screen:

  1. Lol
What a plot or characters to Michael Bay ?
As long as he got his explosion, his lead actor screaming and some hot dumb bimbo in distress, he’s happy and laughing to the bank

  2. Let me guess. Knowing Michael Bay, the Transformers are really space aliens, and not really robots.

    • They’ve always been aliens though.

They come from the planet Cybertron, remember?

      • You ruined my joke, a-hole.

      • lmao… you got him there XD

      • Rules of the man code. Bros before hoes; you don’t mess with a bro’s chick; and you never ruin another man’s joke.

        • and you don’t mow another man’s lawn. As well as, never rub another man’s rhubarb.

        • @Mr Bandwagon (the iPhone user)

Honestly didn’t know he was joking.

Also, I never live by The Bro Code. That’s for teen boys, not men.

          • No, its for men, but not the ones who are pretentious, feminine hipsters. Get the f*** over yourself.

  3. Plot:explosion,explosion,slow motion,more explosions.

    • Don’t forget the spinning camera shot.

    • Also forgot gratuitous closeup shot of hot female actress’ barely covered butt

      • in slow motion of course :)

        • Then it explodes

  4. Transformers the Animated movie rocks SO hard. Everything I love can be directly traced to that movie.

If the Terminator doesn’t happen, Justin Lin should take the reins of transformers. I think he’d really deliver.

    • If they include Grimlock, easily the best transformer of all time, then they MUST use the line from the movie. “Grimlock no bonzo! Grimlock KING!”

      • Dont you mean “Time to Mash Metal”

        • I think you mean “Grimlock kick butt”

          • Grimlock no bozo! Grimlock King!

  5. Wow that clip from the 84 animated movie brought about more then just nostalgia, it just proved all over again how terrible the Bay version is. Sure it was a kid’s cartoon but it had real drama and character at times. The 84 movie is on my top three animated films!

    • You have the touch! You have the power!

    • The entire “storyline” of Transformers ’86 was engineered by Hasbro based on which toys they wanted to sell most. That’s why all the main characters get slaughtered in the first 20 minutes and replaced by dudes nobody has ever heard of. “These kids all own Optimus Prime already. Time to kill him off and sell them this Rodimus toy. Dumb kids won’t even question it.” That movie sucked so bad that one of the films’ own stars, Orson Welles, expressed open disdain for the film, describing it as “bad outer-space stuff” about “toys who do horrible things to each other.” But hey, what does the director of Citizen Kane know about quality filmmaking anyway, right?

      • That movie was awesome and your comparing to different types of movies! Rosebud!

  6. I just want Hot Rod, not Rodimus, Just Hot Rod

  7. I just want Hot Rod

  8. It will be directed by Michael Bay again. I’d say it’s already spoiled big time. ;)

  9. I’m presuming the ex-decepticon samurai guy is gonna be based on Drift

  10. Me wants some Grimlock and Dinobots!!!! Then bring the Predacons for Epic battle.

  11. The animated film came out in 1986, not 1984, as the author erroneously states many times in this article. The animated series with Optimus Prime as the leader throughout ran from 1984 to 1986. The animated film came out in the summer of 1986. I clearly remember because I went to go see it. After it came out, Rodimus Prime and Galvatron were the leaders of the Autbots and Decepticons respectively, with Optimus eventually coming back from the dead.

    • You are correct. Just had it in my mind wrong. I’ve updated the article accordingly.

      • There should be some sort of reward system every time they spot a mistake.

  12. 86! Doh, the film was amazing regardless, just wish Bay would take his cues from it really. As in, something special that exceeds it’s premise. (And have Transformers that are unique and recognizable rather then generic silver metal bots that all look pretty much the same.)

    • Im guessing you didnt see Transformers : Dark of The Moon huh?

  13. One of the rumours floating about is that there might actually be a credible story this time

    • I can debunk that rumor right now. Ehren Kruger is writing the sequel…he wrote the third one and contributed to the second. He also wrote Reindeer Games. I should have started with the Reindeer Games tidbit, everything else is redundant.

  14. I swear if Bumble Bee is not able to talk at the beginning of the flick I am walking out with popcorn flying through the air in sheer madness!!!

  15. I don’t know what to say about this rumors…
In the past I would be ecstatic with the inclusion of Dinobots, but now… I can only recall that Bay didn’t really like the concept of the Dinos, so I doubt he will treat them ‘nicely’ in the same way that he had mistreated Arcee.
I think I really would love to see a fully animated Transformers movie in the future, not one that focus too much on human, and definitely not one directed by Bay. Perhaps, a movie version of War/Fall of Cybertron…

  16. why the dinobots they couldint have thought of better characters to put in

  17. Wish this franchise could be rebooted. The transformers in that game trailer look better than the ones in the film – less busy, more humanoid qualities and more faithful to the cartoons

    • This looks to be a ‘soft reboot’ – basically, they somewhat ignore what came before, but ‘continue’ the franchise, just with different characters. The human cast and main villain will be replaced. This way, there are the benefits of a reboot (not getting too tied to canon/continuity, opportunity to ‘do over’ previous mistakes) along with the upsides of continuing the franchise (guaranteed box office monies, established fanbase, Peter Cullen’s voice)

  18. I am probably the only person who wants to see Beast Wars or Beast Machines.

    • You are not the only person who wishes this was Beast Wars/Machines! Bay sucks!!! ~@~

  19. Unicron wasn’t a Decepticon. The Dinobots are Grimlock, Snarl, Slag, and Swoop. And all of the were not introduced together. And how about have the real Devastator!

  20. Galvatron, Dinobots, Unicron, Kelsey Grammar, I smell money. Transformers 4 will be another Billion dollar blockbuster.

    • Then again it probably might not, at least I hope not.

  21. Why doesnt Bay just make it about two hot lesbians as the protagonists. Cut out the middle man so to speak. I’m sure he would if the studio let him lol ah that Bay. He so crazay.

  22. Bay, just give up the franchise already you greedy tyrant!

  23. It’s a sign of how predictable I think Bay’s Transformers movies are, that I don’t really bother with potentially spoilery articles.

“Star Trek Into Darkness spoilers!” – *stay away*
“Iron Man 3 spoilers!” – *stay away*
    “Potential Transformers 4 spoilers!” – *hmm… meh*

  24. I hope Dino comes back

  25. I just want the “REAL” Soundwave…The version in the last movie? Huh?

Oh, and can we have the scaled-up destructive version we saw from Blackout in the first scene at Qatar? It was like the writers decided they had to cut their power by 95% to make everything work after that.

At Qatar, Blackout was destroying entire runways filled with military cargo planes and tanks. By the end of the movie his blasts were barely flipping hatchbacks. Double-”HUH”?

  26. The first thing that I would like to say is that I love the 1986 animated movie! I miss the transforming noise that they used to make and Megatron’s voice in these cartoons. (Not to mention Soundwave’s voice as well!). With that being said, I do hope that they bring in the Dinobots! Loved Grimlock! They were a big part of the cartoons and they did use the Constructacons in the second installment (T2). Also, I understand that they are bringing back Megatron as Galvatron (and possibly a cameo of Unicron) and I love the move. But, how come he didn’t use the change in the second installment with Optimus? I was waiting and expecting Optimus to change into Rodimus. And I believe that this move is a bit too late, well until a reboot some years from now. Either way, I look forward to some more news about T4.

    • Two different characters and it would kill the movie franchise. They remember what happened after the 1986 movie!

  27. Me, Grimlock, no bozo. Me king!

  28. Galvatron – of course, rebuilt/reformatted Megatron.

Grimlock, in all but name. I bet they make him a bulldozer or construction vehicle. Ironically, Grimlock was a construction vehicle in the U.S. incarnation of the Japanese anime Transformers Car Robots. A useful fact that is interesting to “non-Transfans” or any person not posting like a lunatic in the usual online cesspool forums. Geewunners, Animated! Those people need to get a life.

  29. The worst thing for me was the crap transformers, Devastator, Que !!!?? just make Wheeljack and get rid of the hair. And Dino, just call him mirage will you!! and also they are super awesome advanced robot, and in the 3rd film they still haven’t got Bees voice box fixed, uuuuugh come on that’s just lazy. Also Frenzy was borderline rubbish for me too. But I am a long time fan of transformers and the animated movie/series.
The excitment I got from watching the first film was astronomicle. and the good things for me were Ironhide, Prime with trailer, Shockwave, Ratchet, Jazz dieing, the screamer and obviously John tutorro.

    • he was called dino cause the death of the son of ferrari owner i think, something like that
