[UPDATE: OK, maybe it IS a reboot after all.]
Hoping to see the next Transformers film offer a new take on the live-action version of everybody’s favorite Hasbro toys? That’s not going to happen. Even if director Michael Bay and star Shia LaBeouf are done with the series, Transformers 4 is coming and it’s going to continue down its current path of success.
Producer Don Murphy (Splice, Shoot ‘Em Up), who has served as producer on all three Transformers films to date, assures fans that the franchise isn’t getting a reboot and that it’s more likely to start up a second trilogy, following the same style we’re now accustomed to.
On the message boards of his personal site, Murphy stated the following about the future of the series post-Transformers: Dark of the Moon:
“What happens next? Certainly not a reboot. We haven’t lost the Transformers. They didn’t grow up or become expensive like Toby Maguire. I don’t know what happens next. I’m pretty sure there will be a second trilogy. I am pretty sure it will kick ass. And I am pretty sure some of you will hate it because it wasn’t all bots.”
We saw what happens when a Transformers movie loses one of its human lead characters (i.e. nothing, see: Megan Fox) so with or without Sam Witwicky, the Autobots will return and help lead Paramount Pictures to box office success.

While many fans have shared desires for a movie with less humans and more Cybertronians on screen, that’s also not a realistic expectation. Like it or not, the mass audiences need a human connection to the film and as cool as it would be to see a movie based entirely on Cybertron, it will continue to be grounded here on Earth. The budget couldn’t support the alternative and they need real people to do the press.
It’s only a matter of time before Transformers 4 gets the official greenlight but if they don’t rush it, there is still a possibility of Michael Bay returning to direct TF4. Who the antagonists will be and who will become the new face of the franchise to replace Shia LaBeouf are something Paramount will need to start thinking about, so let the speculation begin!

ok for those who dont know when the original comic book came out in fact to actually introduce the transformers it was gi-joe and then the transformers came into their own. same way with the g2 series because i actually have that comic still and megatron was reintroduced as a tank not a gun. I personally think TF4 should have snippits of unicron, galvatron, blitzwing, astrotrain etc. including the insecticons and dinobots. there are plenty of things to include. maybe have in one movie the bad guy could be galvatron wiht the intro to the insecticons. tf5 be galvatron, astrotrain, etc. and tf6 be the final battle between the autobots and galvatron and unicron to end the series of movies.

They could also introduce new Decepticons coming to earth in search of Megatron while they speak of Unicron preasence within a sequel. Id save Unicron for maybe a cameo appearance in the 5th film as he comes to our solor-system & make his big appearance in 6th & final film. I agree that 4th film could have Blitzwing, Astrotrain, Insecticons, etc. somehow have somthing from Unicron to revive Megatron as Galvatron. After all the Decepticons that arrived on earth & already took alternate forms in Transformers:DOTM, With the help of new character in the franchise “Chip” the Autobots build some heavy duty back-ups to assist the Wreckers, the Dinobots. In the 5th film, while the Decepticons aquire the might of the Stunticons, the Autobots will aquire their own combiner team, the Aerialbots which there could be a sequence where both combiner teams combine & duke it out. As for the 6th film, who knows how to end the franchise with a bang that wouldn’t be too much like Transformers:The Movie.
I have heard people say they dislike the Tformer movies. I loved all 3… However I would expect at the very least in the next film to see Unicron… Stay away from killing off all the primes that are supposedly all already dead accept Optimis according to the second movie(even though the third has yet another prime). Also more story about TFormers and less about the disloyal privileged kid… I mean in the first movie the guy ditches his best friend for a girl… Not a very worth while one either. Second one he wants to cheat on her and by the third he is with another girl.(I understand why but lets be honest this type of person is not the type who would save the world so to speak)

@ Andrea G: I am right there with you on John Turtorro. Unfortunately I also made the statement that the next movie’s setting should be 100 years in the future so disloyal kid is certainly out of any plausible plot. Sometimes I guess we have to make sacrifices for the greater good…
Let’s hope if they go big with Unicron, they will do the same with the Autobots (i.e., Omega Supreme).
They should do this movie about the Transformers with Galvatron, Constructicons, etc and then they meet Riddick vs AvP3 and G.I. Joe vs Tundercats. ALL IN ONE F…… MOVIE!!!!!!!

There is much they could easily use for another trilogy. On top of everything else suggested here, I would love to see Ultra Magnus being introduced and fuse with Optimus to become Omega Prime (Transformers: Robots in disguise series). Also definitely include Fortress Maximus!
A great storyline would definitely bring in Galvatron, perhaps Scourge and also the Commandos (combining into Ruination)
Omega Supreme is a must also!
The first triology was good,Michael Bay and Stiven Spilberg is great team!But if they want the other triology to be better,they have to bring more Transformers.More big,heavy robots!Expecialy heavy Autobots!The Dinobots are some of them!In the third parts of movie 10 Autobots kill the army of Desepticons,with some asists of human army!!!Thats not good story for the cartoon,expecialy for the movie!Optimus kill one half of the Desepticons army,and other little Autobots kill the other part of the army!Is that real??? Autobots needs some heavy asists!!!Bring Dinobots and other heavy and interesting caracters of Autobots and Desepticons!
As long as Michael Bay is not involved, I’m ready to see what direction the franchise goes. And please please, who ever does make the next movie, make sure to let your audience know who the names of the transformers are. In the 3 movies released, we were only told a handful of their names and the rest we had to guess at SMH.
I don’t recall them referring to the two new autobots they brought in for the third movie. The old man scientists that was, I guess, Wheeljack (but everywhere refers to him as Que)and the new red sports car that I thought was Mirage, but that was based on the video game. Turns out the new red autobots named something else, which is fine. Mirage was an older, wiser autobot in the series.
And why did the wreckers have accents? Am I really to believe that an alien race of highly intelligent cybernetic machines comes to earth, learns the predominant language (based on American delusions) and decides that a Scottish accent is the way to go? Really?
They did the same thing with jazz in the first movie: they gave him a comical “street” ebonics slang and he was the first autobot to die. Where was the ACLU for that one?
And did anyone care that Jazz had been ripped in half? Nope. He had about 10 seconds of silence at the end before Optimus tossed him in the bushes and started skipping down the street with disloyal privileged kid whining about something while gorgeous Megan Fox stood there doing what she does best: looking good.
Nobody cared about Ironhide either. He survived two films and was a badass only to get shot in the back by Lenard Nemoy. So much shame.

Good Transformer ideas. Autobots- 5 Dinobots, Omega Supreme, Wing Saber, Autobot Metroplex, Kup. Decepticons- Trypticon, Tidal Wave, The Combaticons that form Bruticus Maximus. And who can forget the legendary Unicron?
I just wanted to say i want the original movie remade then they can go from there.The best thing about the movie was all the killing of the autobots.In the first 10 mins 3 or 4 autobots are dead in the shuttle and in 30 min or so primes toast good guys get hit to many times thats it!And yes leave out the kid less humans in general.
I see you have done a wonderful job of reading the article: there will be no “reboot” of the films.
And from what I gather from your statement, all you are really looking for is an autobot massacre in a half an hour. My advise is to write up your fan fiction and hope some low budget studio gets desperate enough to even consider your idea.
I think my Driving Miss Daisy remake would be far more compelling.
Despite the panning of TF 2 and TF 3, you have to wonder about the critics at times. Ticket sales and viewer input has more of a bearing on theater films. TF 2 won a Raspberry Award for worst picture, but maybe the critic folks need an award for making stupid choices.
If there is a TF4, here is who I would like to see in the film:
The Dinobots: Grimlock may not appear to be that bright, but he is the only AutoBot that Megatron/Galvatron fears.
Hot Rod: He will have to be included for at leas tthe sake of continuity.
Combiner bots like the Aerialbots and Constructicons fighting in combined mode.
Chances are, some of the dead from TF 3 will hopefully be reconstructed.
What I prefer not to see: Gratuitous female ass shots and the equivalent. The gal in TF 3 was always wearing either a pencil dress of skintight jeans and screamed far more often than she spoke. A more useful female with more speech would be a welcome diversion.

They should add some weapons such as the star saber,Skyboom sheild and that cannon(whatever its name was).
And then yeah …There should be Unicron,Galvatron and Beast wars people….
The team should be like:-
Optimus,Sideswipe,Bumble bee,those 2 cars (Nascar),Scavenger,Blurr,Mirage,and those alive till now..
Decepticons:- Galvatron,Thundercracker,Sideways,Dragondinobot(forgot his name),Unicron,etc….
Or
you can make a prequel…..Like….
The war in Cybertron…all will be alive…and…all primes ,megatron etc..

I’ve got an idea for transformers four, megatrons revenge. only he will not return( idea from my freind) Unicron will rise again. Dino bots are included. ( im not sure Shia LeBeof will like this and he did do a good job too) sam witwicky’s son (me) John witwicky. i have the perfect idea youd never realise whats about to happen. p.s make a video game for the ending of dark of the moon for teens and E io+.i await your repliey…

@ matthew: leave the Whiwicky’s out of any future film, as well as the ridiculously attractive women that throw themselves at Shia’s character. I understand the concept of appealing to all of the males senses (gratuitous sex and violence + giant robots that turn into amazing automobiles = blockbuster) but I am with Timothy Linnomme regarding the useless love interests. If a female is present in the next film, please give her a brain.
And, @ matthew, send your head shots to the studio’s if you want a movie role; I doubt any film exec’s are reading this thinking “that matthew kid has a great point! Call him immediately!”

I like the ideas about Dinobots, Unicron, combiners; I even like bringing Chip into the film series, but bringing Beast Wars into the film franchise would not only force me to boycott the next film, but I would also encourage and participate in public burnings of all the films just for integrity sake.

@ matthew: kid, they are all bad ideas. Don’t try to sell any of them. And this is a discussion of FILMS, not video games. I could not care any less about the video game if I tried, nor would I ever equate it to anything notable in the film franchise.
Next movie megatron and assorted dead decepticons get chucked into space. Introduce unicron as a past cybertron battle were they beat him and all that is left is his head just like cartoons. He uses megatron and some lackys remakes em into Galvatron and the sweeps. Introduce Hotrod and the dinobots and a few others have Galvatron kill off Optimus welcoming in Rodimus Prime. This sets up Optimus’s return in a sequel. Tell me how earth shattering killing off Optimus would be (watch the old cartoon movie and parent complaints that followed) I have no idea about anyone else but I like alot of kids back then cried my ass off. Then bring em in for sequels like tf5 : The Return of Optimus Prime! Btw love the idea of calling tf4 : The Rise of Galvatron. Sorry all you anti megatron whiners he is and always will be the bad guy aka Scareface!
Hey, I liked the 80′s cartoon film as much as everyone else that was a child back then. It was epic, it was amazing and watching Hot Rod become the next prime was an awesome twist. However, that movie is enough to stand on it’s own and, in my opinion, does not need a remake.
There is something to be said for the past three films and the ingenuity that has gone into them. These films encompass the same character’s and similar ideas, but they also stand separate from the old series / animated films. That is the point: to be creative. As much as it pains me to say this, Michael Bay and the production team responsible for the last three films have done an excellent maintaining the integrity of the characters and the concepts while simultaneously creating a new storyline for them to follow.
And after that slight rant we get to my point: if I want to see Rodimus Prime I will go to the 80′s flick. What I want to see is something new and exciting and the old rules being slightly bent without being completely broken. Unicron, Galvatron, dinobots are all excellent ideas, but I don’t need a complete remake of the old series. If these characters are brought in, bring them in on a clean slate with a fresh start. Back stories can be the same, but how they progress forward should make me engaged and anxious, not allowing me to predict every step and motion that takes place.
People want a prequel with the war on cybertron: go watch the 80′s series! People want Rodimus Prime: go watch the 80′s film! People who want to see something new, unique and imaginative: pray they don’t ruin the franchise.
