It isn't all too clear what kind of film Transformers: Age of Extinction will be. On the one hand, it's the fourth film in a increasingly maligned franchise that has fans wary of being burned yet again. On the other, the human cast is all new, the robots have been redesigned, and Optimus Prime riding atop a dinobot appears extremely pertinent to the plot - so really, why not give Transformers a second chance?

Which is the hope of all involved: to win back those fans who've written off the franchise. Director Michael Bay has already made it clear he intends for Transformers 4 to "redesign" and "freshen the franchise," and if successful, this film will serve as a foundation for even more Transformers films. Age of Extinction is also said to have a darker, more serious tone than the childish, over-the-top humor so common in the series' earlier installments.

Yet, the dichotomy of Transformers 4 is all too apparent. While the film may be trying to appear less ridiculous, Optimus Prime astride Grimlock is everywhere in the marketing and the character designs - especially for newcomers Hound and Drift - come off as cartoonish and caricatured.

These three new television spots (above and below) don't do much to change the impression that Transformers: Age of Extinction might be a film at war with itself, unsure of the movie it's really trying to be, but they sure do exploit what these films are best at: insane robot on robot action.

In addition to the new TV spots, there is yet another new poster for Transformers 4. This one featuring all four of the film's heroes: Optimus, Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor.

Transformers Age of Extinction Poster

Who here has the bigger biceps - Optimus or Wahlberg? Seriously.

This latest poster appears to have been cobbled together and photoshopped from character posters we've already seen, but here we have our human protagonists side by side with their Cybertronian savior. It also provides us with a real good look at Optimus' new design, which - like all the Transformers minus that one with a gun for a face - have been given more detailed and more human-looking faces. Possibly to allow them to emote better with their human co-stars, but also for the (less likely) reason that those behind this movie want to frightened audiences with robotic lips.

Has the marketing for Transformers: Age of Extinction made you more or less interested in checking out the movie? Will Transformers 4 actually be a more serious take for the franchise? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
