Transformers 3 Will Not Be Written By Orci & Kurtzman [Updated]

[UPDATE: It's Confirmed: Orci and Kurtzman are NOT writing Transformers 3]

On Tuesday, word spread online that the writers for Transformers and its sequel Revenge of the Fallen, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, would not be writing the third installment in the franchise.

The information originated from the Don Murphy forums were Orci participates regularly and it was here where the writer revealed that he and his partner are done with Transformers.

“Time for fresh blood!” writes Orci. “The main reason we would move on is because we risk getting stale and comfortable. If you only sing one song for too long, you miss the opportunity to sing news songs. We’ll see.”

While I enjoyed Transformers upon second viewing (the first time all I came out with was thoughts of the negative parts), my personal belief is that the main weakness of Transformers was its screenplay and that so many of its problems would have been rectified by different writing decisions. For that reason, I am pleased that the story, characters and dialogue will be written by others the third time around.

Whether that means just Ehren Kruger will write it himself, or others will come aboard to take Orci’s and Kurtzman’s spots. It’ll give them a chance to focus on other (read: better) projects where they may have a tad bit more control of the final product.

I’m hoping for and expecting a better movie experience with Revenge of the Fallen but I am happy there will be new writers behind Transformers 3. Orci and Kurtzman have a real test this year with both Star Trek and Revenge of the Fallen having been written/co-written by them and debuting as Summer tentpole films – so we’ll get a real good look at their writing ability.

What do you think of this news?

Update: Collider managed to get these quotes out of Kurtzman and Orci on the subject of Transformers 3:

Why have you decided not to be involved with Transformers 3?

Bob: We’ve been working on Transformers longer than I was in college. I feel like we have our degree in Transformers now.

Alex: The franchise is so wonderful that it deserves to be fresh, all the time. We just felt like we’d given it a lot and didn’t have an insight for where to go with it next, and said, “You should do it right.”

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opens June 24, 2009 and Transformers 3 is scheduled for July 1, 2011.

  1. wow it took a moment there for me to realize that bob orci just stoped by to say hi !!!

    Bob,

if your read this, i have a question for you:
would you be involved in a MI:IV???

    i thought MI:III was amazing…

  2. To all the abolute fools criticising these two writers, they may have made a terrible mistake with transformers 2, but Star Trek had a great fun script. They can write Star Trek films for the rest of their career for all i care, I loved that film. Loved it.And upon further viewings some of the plotholes have vanished, pay closer attention and be rewarded. Cant wait to see what the next star trek will be like, as for transformers 3, i will not be in the queue on opening day. Whoever writes it, the first one was good, but making sequels only highlights all the intrinsic problems with a movie of that nature.

  3. There is only so much that can be done with giant talking robots and alluring shots of Megan Fox’s anatomy, i think Bay can be held most accountable. His vision, his film.

  4. @StuntmanJ

They may not have anything ‘original to their names’ but i can think of one very well thought of film maker who hasnt bothered doing anything terribly original for a long time.

    Peter Jackson.

Talented yes. But, LOTR, KING KONG, THE LOVELY BONES, TINTIN. There are no original ideas in Hollywood anymore. Just sequels, remakes, and adaptations.

  5. @Beckett – There are plenty of original ideas in Hollywood they are just mostly coming from the indie studios. I have no problem with adaptations actually. Most books are good for story telling and if done right are very enjoyable.

  6. @gigan300 – Calling them hacks is a bit harsh. Check out the latest interview with them and see if it doesn’t better explains somethings for you.

  7. I don’t think these guys have ever written anything original. every movie they have been involved with has already been written, they just needed to make adjustments. star trek and transformers being the first that come to mind. even the upcoming cowboys and aliens already has a story.

  8. Orci and Kutzman are hacks who depend on the tie-in comic to explain the movie. A movie should be able to explain itself withouth the comic.

  9. @gigan

Actually I understand that there was footage shot for the film that gave more backstory but it was cut due to Abrams/Paramount wanting to keep the film shorter.

Maybe it’ll turn up on the upcoming DVD.

  10. ithink the revenge of the fallen was ten times better then the frist one because it went in to the past a little bit more of the robots. i think that michael baydid a gret job in diracting the film and i think that no one will do better then him.

  11. Orci and Kurtzman both made a wonderful,Great job in Star Trek(thanks for this remake; I can say “I’m not a Star Trek fan;but u have any idea how much I enjoyed, loved the film…Wooww my respects for you all) and I would like to see them coming back as writers and producer for the StarTrek sequel..!!

  12. u rock but i think u need to get a new character who can battle with aptimist prime and see who is the better competeter nd notice the difference even though aptimist prime is awsum no doubt there but still he needs to battle

  13. Wow, I’ll be waiting for transformer 3.

I think there will be so many different between the 1st and 2nd version.

  14. Thank god these guys left
