Transformers 3 Trailer 2 New Transformers 3 Trailer is Explosively Awesome [Updated]

[UPDATE: Check Out the First Official Transformers 3 Poster!]

The teaser trailer brought us to the first moon landing and the Super Bowl TV spot introduced us to the action. Now, the first full trailer and second official theatrical trailer for Transformers: Dark of the Moon is online, bringing with it the story.

Seemingly everyone involved with the Transformers movies thus far, from star Shia LaBeouf to director Michael Bay, has admitted to the faults of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and promise much, much better with their third and final go. We cannot deny that Transformers 3 looks promising, but we haven’t had a look into the story and characters yet… until now.

While the Apollo 11 teaser trailer gave us a very unique intro to the story for the next Transformers, it was the brief Super Bowl spot that pulled us into the action, right in the middle of a horrifying invasion of Chicago. Many new Decepticons, much larger ones at that, scoured the city and and the visual effects were miles ahead of the rushed production of its predecessor.

Let’s put that into context with the new full trailer for Transformers: Dark of the Moon:

Head over to Apple for the HD version

We’ll update with our own version as soon as we are able.

A common criticism for the last Transformers movie is that they added so many characters without actually adding any character to them. Revenge of the Fallen was weighed down by a convoluted plot and countless nameless characters whose only purpose was to justify an extended Hasbro toy line. From what we’ve seen from Dark of the Moon so far, there are twice as many characters (Cybertronians and humans) in TF3, so we can only hope they serve a legitimate role in the story writer Ehren Kruger put together. We can at least say, they all look better in their action sequences!

The first teaser gave us our first look at what we believe is the Ark (an Autobot ship from Cybertron) from the perspective of Neil Alden Armstrong, but this new trailer shows the Ark crashing, but not revealing when that occurs. From the original Transformers cartoon and the Beast Wars animated series in the 90s, the Ark crashed millions of years ago and became the base of operations for the Autobots after awakening from a volcanic eruption in the 80s. We can expect that the film will explain much more of the backstory of the Autobots and Decepticons and how they came to Earth. Here’s a little side-by-side put together by our own Paul Young of the Ark from the trailers and the one from the original animated series.

The one redeeming quality of Revenge of the Fallen was how they amped up the bad-ass factor of Optimus, emphasizing him as not only the poster bot of the franchise but the greatest warrior of the Aubots. In this trailer, that idea is taken to an entirely new level as Optimus seemingly comes from nowhere againt all odds, to wreak havoc on a group of Decepticons (parts of this seen were shown in the Super Bowl teaser). In this sequence, he’s again augmented with additional parts which allow him to fly, like we saw when he merged with Jetfire (an old Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird) in the last movie.

The set pieces are much more massive and bring the story much closer to home, as they tear apart the City of Chicago. From a visual standpoint, Michael Bay has taken the franchise to an entirely new level and from this trailer alone, we can recommend this as an IMAX experience worthy of the extra dollars.

Some quick observations of note are that they don’t really hone in on any of the new autobot characters, and we know there are many from the set pictures that surfaced during production. That’s not at all a bad thing, and it actually allows them to slowly reveal more as we approach July. The less they show before the film hits, the better. You’ll also notice that Megan Fox’s replacement, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley doesn’t speak a word.

Story isn’t the selling point of the Transformers films but it’s important that it’s at least compelling and enjoyable. What are your expectations now for TF3?

Transformers regulars Shia LaBeouf, John Turturro, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson return for Dark of the Moon along with our favorite Autobot heroes and are joined by series newcomers, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Patrick Dempsey, Kevin Dunn, with John Malkovich and Frances McDormand. Let us not forget that Leonard Nimoy will be voicing the mighty Sentinel Prime.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon hits regular theaters and IMAX on July 1st, in 2D and 3D.

  1. This one looks leaps and bounds better then the last installment. Not sure if I will see it though… (Im still pissed Megan Fox isn’t in this!!!)

  2. They dropped the ball big time on #2. This looks back from the dead…I’m in. TF3 FTW. I just hope there’s some resemblance of a cohesive plot. If not, it’ll at least be a feast for the senses. This is the stuff Imax dreams are made of.

  3. lol this is a full 30 secondsl onger than the deathly hallows part 2 trailer and that trialer still completly pwns this one

    • seriously… they just need to stop harry potter all together. Are we on the like 8th harry potter movie? It should have just stayed a book. This trailer is much more interesting by leaps and bounds.

      • Uh, Mark, you ARE aware this is the last film which covers the last half of the final book, right?

        Vic

  4. Can’t believe how many people don’t think this trailer looks great – anyone who knows me knows I am NOT a fan of the last one and didn’t even really like the first one that much.. but this looks like it might be pretty damned awesome and make up for the prior crappiness.

    Vic

    • I couldn’t agree more. I had no reason to look forward to another Transformers movie. But, this looks (and sounds) fantastic. Between this, HP two weeks later and then Captain America. July is shaping up to be one for the blockbuster record books. By the time this summer is over I’ll have to take out a mortgage.

    • What did you think of the TF2 trailer when it first surfaced?

As a fan of the first Transformers movie and the franchise in general, the sequel also badly disappointed me. But I saw no warnings that it would suck so much from the trailers, IIRC…

      • The Transformers 2 trailer was pretty awesome and really gave no indication of the suckitude to come.

        • You’re right that you can never REALLY tell how the movie will turn out from the trailer, BUT this trailer (with its connected hopes) has two things going for it the TF2 trailer did not:

          1. Because there’s no writer’s strike or other similar concerns this time (OR the natural high of a previous, generally highly regarded installment in the franchise–first “Transformers” leading into the second), the majority of the budget and creativity, hopefully, is not being focussed primarily on the trailer just to get people into the theaters, as opposed to the movie, itself.

          2. Bay, et al, have had the experience of TF2 (and its consequent lessons AND backlash) to learn what NOT to do in TF3…we all hope.

      • Phil,

        To answer your question:

“It’s looking like ‘Transformers 2′ will up the action factor – but still have idiotic humor.”

  5. To put succintly, trailer has now gotten me pumped up for TF3 and although I think there is something seriously wrong with the amount of makeup piled onto Whiteley, I’m tentatively pleased about the new blood. Er, sort of. Honestly, Fox, Whiteley, “Sam’s girlfriend” is all the same to me.

And if Bay tanks, then I’ll enjoy it anyways for the robot fights.

  6. Holy crap! They’re bringing old school with carly and kip the wheelchaired kid! So glad thoses two hacks didn’t write this installment :)

    • Dang I just was informed and realized that john tutorro was in the wheelchair. Fail on me. Damn mobile.viewing lol :)

  7. With gas prices so high this summer, it sucks knowing I might have to someBlack choose between seeing this (and all the other great movies coming out) and actually being able to drive to places I need to
be. Time to start collecting cans and bottles and dumpster diving…. I got a wife and kid, that’s THREE tickets I gotta buy lol

  8. I’m pretty sure megatron was in dragon format, like beast wars..

  9. I feel this trailer was great. I hope the entire film can hold up to it. Three things I have always been sure about in a Transformer film, that the action will be sweet, the visual effects will be scucessful, and Shia LaBeouf loves to yell “Optimus!!!”.

    • Oh man, sorry I mean “successful”.

  10. Although I didn´t like the second movie, I have to admit that this trailer kicks ass. But so did many trailers (X3, TF2, Wolverine, etc.). And although I think that the new chick looks like an emotionless blow up doll (she has the same face expressions in every scene she´s in), I´ll wait until I´ve seen it at least once before I bash it.

  11. I hope the Dinobots are in this, Grimlok the strongest there is! The trailer looks good and makes me mad because after 2 I said there was no way I would watch another Transformers movie in a theater. I agree with the characters, it doesn’t look like one new Autobot was introduced and you get a bunch of silver colored Decepticons ripe for the killing.

    • Uhm… Actually Hulk strongest there is! Hulk smash Grimlock! :D

  12. Not sold yet. Looks pretty, but Bay has fooled me before.

  13. I almost can’t believe I’m about to say this but….. EPIC. Really, looks absolutely EPIC. I like many enjoyed the first movie as a good fun but not great film. The second was still fun but silly and at times headache inducing but it SEEMS they’ve learned their lessons.

    Optimus, my man!

  14. Looks good (of probably shallow) fun, but Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a dog.

    • Well that wasn’t very nice at all… :p

  15. Antony

    I’m sure you’re a looker.

    • I’m a looker. Well, if you’re blind. :-)

  16. KILLER!!!!!!!!!

  17. All I wanna know is this, is Shia about to cap someone!? I’m surprised, that shot alone makes this look so much darker! Also I need to see some megatron action.

  18. Awesome, I hope it’s better than Transformers 2.

    • Well, it can´t be any worse. That´s for sure.

  19. looks awesome. i’ll be there

  20. is it just me or does that trailer seem to show the end of the movie? Where Optimus says,” you may lose your faith in us but never in yourselves from here the fight will be your own.” I’d be willing to bet that the Autobots say goodbye in this one and use the space bridge to go back to Cybertron.

    • Wondering the same thing?
does any one have any thoughts besides “Transformers 2″ sucks?

      • DoOrDie,

LOTS of people have offered thoughts other than what you just put forward.

        Vic

  21. Not bad. I really enjoyed the fight scenes they showed this time around, you can actually tell what the hell is going on.

  22. That’s a sweet poster.

    • I concur. Optimus’s inner rage seems to surface..

  23. This may be the best Transformers movie yet, but the trilogy is still a failure. Bay has no shame admitting the second movie was garbage and pumping this one up like it will fix the franchise. This should have been a Spielberg project from the beginning. -This may be worth the 3D and visuals, maybe.

  24. This will be epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic epic… and EPIC!!!

    • Ugh.

      • Ugh? Why ugh? Too many epics?

  25. I cant believe people are still talking smack. I guess its what the internet is for. Wasn’t this addressed in Jay and SIlent Bob Strike Back? I am pretty sure I still had dial up then. I am glad we can talk faster trash now. Just the crash landing on the moon looks sick never mind the rest. I think it looks amazing for a movie based on toys. So number two was a little “hokey?” I still like it. They didnt have to make it and I didn’t have to give them my time or money, oh and I love this site so when I talk trash I try to make points rather than be an immature lil turd. How do you spell turd? tird? terd? Either way, I think it looks sick. I am wondering what the running time is going to be. There is a whole lot more to this movie than that trailer reveals. Like John Malkovich(why is he there again? Maybe as the Vulture? haha if you dont get it oh well) Maybe Patrick Dempsey is going to deliver a pizza to Kirstie Alley in reprising his role from the 80s? I hope this movie pushes two hours otherwise you can say good bye to any kind of decent story, plot or character development. Shes hot, they are good actors…..now watch them fight fight fight kaboom. hahahaaa, at least I know I can expect that

    • The only character development needed is for Sentinel Prime and/or Shockwave. I don’t care about the female lead.

  26. Thanks, SR, for putting the trailer on the site. For some reason I couldn’t bring up the Apple trailer.

Film looks great, but we’ve been fooled before. I think I’ll wait for a review.

  27. My only hope is that they don’t try to throw in a quick lil Unicron that is actually a ship or carrier like Bay mentioned in the past. When they carry on with this cash cow after this movie I would like to see Unicron at some point on film and not some weird, cheap, easy adaptation of him(it?.)

  28. Im not a fan of Transformers but I must say that trailer sold me. Wow.

  29. Only weak moment is the one line delivered by the young male kid opposite Shia.
