Mechanical juggernauts will rampage across the big screen yet again in action movie auteur Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third entry in Paramount’s cash churning toys-turned-TV-show-turned-blockbuster movie franchise (and the first to be shot in 3D).

Now the Transformers: Dark of the Moon teaser trailer has arrived and it offers assurances that there will be massive metal men wrecking havoc in the film, but as to the quality of the film’s appearance when viewed in the stereoscopic format (re: 3D) – that issue remains up in the air.

The 3D issue has caused us here at Screen Rant a collective headache in the past as we were led to believe not once, but twice that segments of the live-action footage in Mr. Bay’s third Transformers pic would be converted to the third dimension in post-production – that is, until our claims were swatted down firmly by both studio officials and the director himself. Yet still there are lingering rumors that the film’s CGI sequences won’t be the only bits of footage getting the post-conversion treatment.

As noted in our Transformers 3 Teaser article, Dark of the Moon‘s 3D cinematography will now be subject to an unheralded amount of scrutiny from movie buffs who might’ve otherwise just sat back and enjoyed the sight of crunching metal, explosions, and destruction onscreen without questioning whether it was actually filmed using 3D camera rigs – or converted after the fact.

There’s not enough actual footage in this Transformers: Dark of the Moon teaser to resolve the issue, but expect this matter to be raised again when the next trailer hits – and with our Transformers 3 review, naturally.

Check out the Transformers: Dark of the Moon teaser trailer below:

The atmosphere of this teaser trailer is very much on the dark and ominous side – more akin to that of the original Alien than is to be expected from a sci-fi flick about giant robots. The bit of CGI on display certainly looks as cutting-edge and eye-dazzling as Bay has promised, so we’re willing to wait and find out how it looks in the third dimension – for now.

This preview also gels with previous rumblings that Transformers: Dark of the Moon will revolve around the Autobots and Decepticons being involved in a space race between the U.S. and Russia. Whether a mystical MacGuffin – like the All Spark in the first film or the Matrix of Leadership from Transformers 2 – will be used to get the threequel’s plot mechanics working is not yet clear.

new robot Transformers 3 Teaser Trailer Finally Arrives

Here’s perhaps a more interesting question – just who is this new robot (see above) that appears in the Transformers: Dark of the Moon teaser? It could be Alpha Trion, who (in Dreamwave’s Generation 1 comics) was a prisoner of Shockwave, a character we know WILL appear in the third Transformers pic. If that is the case, then it’s nice to see that Bay is including certain details in the film that should sit well with longtime Transformers fans.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon arrives in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on July 1st, 2011. Will it be the best of the giant robot trilogy?

  1. “This preview is in line with previous rumblings that Transformers: Dark of the Moon will revolve around the Autobots and Decepticons being involved in a space race between the U.S. and Russia.”

What is this? 1960s or what?

    • Well – in this teaser trailer at least – yes, amusingly enough. 😎

      • I like this trailer. It´s kinda mysterious. We´ll have to wait and see how the movie turns out to be. The trailer for the second movie was great too. And we all know how the movie was…

  2. Not what I expected but it’s still interesting

  3. Wow. That looks awesome. I am so adding this to the movies I’m gonna see next year.

  4. Meh. I’ll be pissed if that was Shockwave in that trailer.

    • Thats not shockwave.

  5. I can’t get it to work.
I just get “Waiting for Movie” each time I try to view it. I take it others have gotten it to work.

    • Yeah for some reason I cant see it. Does anyone have a YouTube link or another one?

      • Youtube link is up now, Rickster – along with a pic of the new robot in the teaser. :-)

        • Thanks Sandy 😀

This was an awsome teaser it may actually be good :)

  6. Nice trailer. The robot has to be Shockwave.
Is it me or does the bot have sort of a Voltron/Samurai look.

    • The robot at the end of the trailer is not Shockwave. When I was at the filming of the movie in Chicago, I saw the pic of Shockwave and he still have the same robot head as like the toy and cartoon version. I think it’s Unicorn!! Think about it why is there a huge “off-line” robot, wake up and kind of looks likke Unicorn. What do you guys think???

      • Yeah, I watched it again, and realized it wasn’t Shockwave (thankfully). I doubt it’s Unicron, but if it is, then I’ll once agains be pissed. Unicron is supposed to be HUGE. I mean, bigg as a planet huge.

      • NO Unicron is a planet when not in robot mode.

        • People, people, don’t you know that Bay loves to ruin stories? To me, it’s more than possible that it’s Unicron and Bay just made him smaller because he felt like it. It’s the robot he most resembles, not Alpha Trion. Believe it, Bay’s an idiot.

  7. Yeah, even for a teaser i wasn’t impressed really.

    • Yea,cause your movies are better right? Shoulda, coulda, woulda.

      • Did I say that lol. Put a cork in it, pal

      • I thought it was a good teaser, certainly nothing in there to make me think negatively about this one. I’m actually hoping this one is GOOD.

BTW, you don’t have to be a master chef to tell that you’ve been fed awful food. That “let’s see YOUR movie” argument is so tired.

        • Hope dies last…

        • Aaaahhh. The voice of reason. lol. I’ve always said that if you are expected to be a master at EVERYTHING you have an opinion on, then there would be no such as opinion anymore. lol.

  8. They find the real script for revenge of the fallen in that ship

    *rim shot*

    • No,the writers that were
on strike, are found on that ship.

      • it’s a toilet so they can flush Megan Fox’s career after being dumped by Transformers

(can you imagine, being DUMPED by TRANSFORMERS?! ooooouch!)

  9. So since the actual landing on the Moon never happened……the scene actually fits the entire Science Fiction premise.

    • That’s a joke, right?

          • Um, yeah… OK.

    • did you watch the trailer??they land on the moon-and venture over to the darkside-that’s the side you never see…know your science, and get your facts straight bub.

      • Hey dude keep getting all mad about a little internet post. I’m not some hippy conspiracy nut job. I was talking about a documentary I saw not the video I posted. And mythbusters is such a viable source of scientific facts. Just having a little fun. Don’t take it personally. Jeesh.

  10. This would have been more interesting if the whole movie was set in the 60s.

    • Hahaha, you might enjoy the next X-Men movie then…

  11. Looks like one of the Junkions from the Animated Movie… I doubt they did that.

    • that would be cool, but Im betting its Alph Trion like the article says.

      • comparing cartoon details, i think this is Alpha Trion

  12. That’s not shockwave or unicron(hopefully) I’m wondering who it is then

  13. could be ultra magnus…

  14. Definitely looks more like Alpha Trion than anyone else.

    Not Shockwave for sure.

Can’t be Unicron, yes, CRON, not CORN! :)

Unicron is larger than Earth, not small enough to be on the surface of our moon!

    We shall see….

  15. Very cool teaser.

  16. Given the large shoulders, I’m going to say it Alpha Trion. He wasn’t just in Dreamwaves comic but also in the original cartoon.

  17. Has the feel of the teaser we saw for the first Transformers movie. Alpha Trion would be cool! Maybe they will have some origins stuff in there?

  18. Now way it could be shockwave, he’s the guardian of cybertron in the G1 series. I agree with most commenter’s here it looks like Alpha Trion. Let’s hope cause maybe they can use him to get into the sci-fi mythos.

  19. the colour scheme of that robot is that of unicron, but it sorta looks like alpha trion.

i hope the movie is set in the 60’s, that way we wont have toput up with shia labeof’s terrible acting… wait a minute are those clowns returning ?

i little while ago there where rumours that it(unicron) would be in the movie so idk all i can was is if that’s supposed to be unicron then they’ve already f***ed up the movie 😉

  20. Yeah probably kinda looks like he has a goatee like in the original series so probably is Alpha Trion.

  21. By way he also turned Orion Pax into Optimus Prime.

    • the body type is defenitly his,but why yellow?

  23. Woo! I’m excited for this movie!

  24. Dispite the sequel, I have high hopes for this one

  25. Alpha Trion also had a hand in the creation of the Aerialbots in the 80’s cartoon. And we already know the team’s leader Silverbolt will be in the film so i hope the rest will be too so we see the Autobots have a giant Combiner team. Though no word about the Contructicons makin a return, it would be great to see one giant combiner robot fight.

    • Can you link us to a site that shows off this toy model? Because unless I see proof (no offense to you) I HIGHLY doubt that is Unicron, Unicron is the size of a Moon, not an average sized transformer. Go watch the Transformers Animated movie from 1986.

        • What if it is Unicron, and he is not on our moon, but he IS the moon. This would be interesting.

          • I have to admit, i had the same thought a while back, could the moon actually be Unicron. The problem there is; even Michael Bay won’t destroy the moon. We kinda need the moon.

            • You never know, he likes to blow things up when they dont need to be lol, maybe get a fragmented moon at the end like on The Time Machine.

  26. Well, if that’s Unicron, then there goes another Transformer mythos out the window.

I can still forgive the way Devastator was presented in Revenge of the Fallen, as in he was this four-legged giant robot (with balls to boot) instead of a biped, “normal” looking robot in the cartoon series. And…yeah, maybe I can also accept Frenzy in the first movie to look like the boombox that Soundwave was supposed to be in the cartoon, instead of the human sized robot that can cause earthquakes like Rumble. Anyway, the “Boombox Frenzy” can be considered as a nod to the cartoon Soundwave since Frenzy (along with Prowl, Lazerbeak and Rumble) are just the “cassette tapes” that come out of the cartoon Soundwave’s chest.

However, Unicron is literally a “planet eater” so that small robot can’t and shouldn’t be him. That for me, is already a very extreme departure on what these robots were in the cartoon series. Unless of course, the movie would have a twist, like the the moon itself will be revealed to be a gigantic robot and is actually a part of the Unicron robot that was shown in the teaser.

Oh well…better just wait and see.

    • actually if it is alpha Trion, then he might have been still being held captive by Shockwave, like in the Cartoons.
