Transformers 3 To Start Shooting This May?

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen review

It’s been known for a few months now that Transformers 3, the planned sequel to the bombastic Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, will be coming out on July 1st, 2011, a full year ahead of its original date of July, 2012. And now we learn that the third movie could be going into production as soon as May of this year.

Collider points to the little tidbit of info reported by Mike Fleming, who landed just recently at Deadline Hollywood after leaving Variety. Here’s what he reported:

“[Shia] LaBeouf recently wrapped Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, which opens in April. He’ll likely start work in May on Transformers 3.”

That means us fans will barely have seen the last of the millions of smashed robot bits from Revenge of the Fallen before the third movie gets underway. I imagine that pre-production will start even sooner than May, since LaBeouf’s part is only in the acting department and for a Transformers movie the scope and amount of prep work that needs to be done is bound to be huge.

It’s still early in the game for Transformers 3, and at this point we don’t even know what the story will be or which robots will make appearances this time around. According to Bay’s official announcement that the movie would be hitting screens in 2011, they have a “great story” this time around – but coming from the guy who’s M.O. is blowing stuff up, I find that statement highly suspect. I could be wrong and it could turn out to be the Citizen Kane of blockbusters – but somehow I doubt that.

I’m not a baptized Transformers geek so I can’t name specific robots that I wish they’d put in this one; all I know is I’d like for some semblance of coherence in the action sequences, the ability to actually tell which robot is which (not being a fan who would naturally know the difference) and for the running time to be short enough that I don’t feel the pain of needing the bathroom. If Bay can accomplish at least those things, I’ll be much happier with Transformers 3 than I was with the first and second (just for the record I enjoyed the two of the them, but would have enjoyed them so much more if those problems weren’t in there).

If this May, 2010 production start is true, then it puts Transformers 3 on track nicely for the planned July 1st, 2011 release date. Amongst other things it’ll be interesting to see how it fares without Transformers 1 and 2 screenwriters, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman

What would you like to see done for the next Transformers movie?

  1. How is Shia gonna juggle doing this, Indy and Spiderman at the same time???

  2. The second film to me is a guilty pleasur, but I do hope they improve on the third.

  3. Thanks for the notice. More crap on the way. Gotcha.

  4. The first one had holes but overall I liked it… the second film sucked so bad it’s scary!!! They will really need to sell me to see this movie. I think they did some things in 2 that are really going to put off most old school transformer fans.

  5. I think that if this is the last movie, they should have Unicron in it. I’d pay double to see Unicron all CGI’d.

  6. Kick the twins out and give the rest of the transformers more screentime and some serious depth. Then O PLEASE give us some real robotwars. Everytime i see them fight it seems like a smallscale skirmish where decepticons always seem upperhand and then suddenly start loosing becouse the script says so.

  7. I initially read that as “bombad” and was greatly disturbed.

  8. Please have soundwave crush megan fox

  9. DrSamBeckett
shia in Spidey?…No way you are serious

anyways, as previously pointed out….we need Unicorn to wipe out Revenge off our minds

  10. It’s obvious that the Dinobots will be in this one. I just hope that they don’t f*ck up Grimlock, he’s my favorite.

  11. I pray that they manage to turn this around and make it truer to the first movie. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have heard our cries Bay.

I doubt it though. Wasn’t Bay’s response to the twins, “Hey, it wasn’t my problem, it was the actor’s problem.” I don’t see much hope for a better third movie with attitude’s like that.

  12. Wow, another so-called writer bashing Transformers – what a surprise. Plenty of originality here I see.

  13. The Spidey thing was just a gag, but to be honest he would be good in the part, he has the cheeky energy to pull off Peter/Spidey.

  14. i think it going to be different and interesting to know what they are going to do with it. Hope it still good like the other 2 films.

  15. @M-Cat

Apparently the ranks of movie journalists and reviewers are FILLED with “so-called” writers if the defining item is dislike of the Transformers movies. 8)

  16. Are any of you aware that an early draft for this film was leaked onto the internet back in December? It does sound as if it will be the best of the films, but thats not saying much, lol.

And trust me, it IS legit.

  17. ok someone said earlier that the dinobots will “obviously” be in this movie. I don’t understand how they could possibly tie the dinobots in so will someone please enlighten me.

  18. Bay has stated that he HATES the Dinobots. So, I doubt they would be in the film.

  19. i think people who dissed the second movie need to lighten up. Its a fun movie, go and enjoy it. People who say revenge of the fallen was rubbish well, have you checked the box office. Its made nearly 900 million dollers so it cant have been that rubbish. Personally i loved them both, and cant wait for the 3rd, hope transformers 3 goes dark side.

  20. @” Its made nearly 900 million dollers so it cant have been that rubbish”

Just because it made a lot of money doesn’t mean that the film has quality. Just look at Spider-man 3.

I’ll admit that I enjoyed the film enough to buy it on Blu-Ray, however.

  21. @ Matt Keith

No, that script was in no way legit. It was a giant badly-written fanwank that would in no way have been greenlit even by today’s standards. Shoot, it flat out ignored almost everything about the second movie except for the fact that there was some device in Egypt (no mention at all of any one of the ROTF robots). Debunked by a few people actually working on the film, and something tells me they weren’t just saying that to keep it under wraps. That would have involved it being pulled from the fansites.

Anyway, the lack of a writer strike indicates the script for this one will have more time for polish and touch-up. Should be an improvement. I’d personally like to see Wheeljack, Prowl, and Blitzwing in TF3. Shoot, I’d like to see the film bring back Barricade so that he can have it out with Prowl, a police car vs. police car fight.

  22. @Duck

A writer for my site always gets scripts, and can tell you 100% that its real

  23. I can tell you 110% its not.

  24. OMEGA SUPREME!!!!

  25. oh no.

  26. Grimlock. Nuff Said.

  27. revenge of the fallen was abysmal! the acting, the story…hell everthing about it made me cringe…and im a life long transformers fan

for this one all they need to do is translate the 1986 animated movie directly into a live action movie and it will be monumental

and give starscream more development, he is the most interesting character and deserves alot better than how he has been handled in the previous 2

  28. the 86 movie was even cornier than either of the two movies. can't just translate it to film. doesn't really work that way lol.

  29. I'm not seeing this. Transformers 2 was one of the worst films I've seen in my entire life, and I have no respect for Michael Bay or Megan Fox.
