First review for Transformers 3 Early Transformers 3 Review Says Its The Best One Yet [Updated]

[UPDATE: We've seen it with our own eyes - check out our Transformers 3 review]

There’s been more than a healthy dose of skepticism on our end whenever we talk about Michael Bay’s trilogy-capper, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Even Bay has come clean about what a mess the second Transformers movie was at this point – and just about everyone involved in the production of this summer’s entry in the giant alien robot series has gone on about what an overall improvement the third film is (enough so that the TF3 entry on this “Honest Summer Movie Posters” list is more than appropriate).

Now that the first “official” review for Dark of the Moon has been released, it begs the question: Is the film actually all that better than Revenge of the Fallen?

According to Capone over at AICN, the answer is definitely “yes.” As he put it:

“I’m genuinely surprised what a strong effort ['Transformers 3'] is, not just in terms of its scope, but also in its pacing, performances, and ideas. This one dares to go dark from time to time, and that helped me find the often-lacking component of many Bay films: emotion. You probably won’t shed any tears watching DARK OF THE MOON, but you will care when certain lives are lost or in peril. This one might actually rock you a little to your foundation; get excited about that.”

Capone was also keen to emphasize just how awe-inspiring he found the second half of the film, which primarily focuses on the destruction of downtown Chicago – as was featured heavily in the footage from the Transformers 3 trailer. He even praised Megan Fox’s replacement (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), expressing gratitude that “she’s actually got something to do here beyond just looking like a million bucks.”

Transformers Dark of the Moon 3 Early Transformers 3 Review Says Its The Best One Yet [Updated]

Obviously, there’s good reason to take all this Transformers 3 praise with a grain of salt. The review was actually of an unfinished 2D cut of the movie, and sometimes early word about how much better a sequel (or threequel) is can be a bit inflated (remember how enthusiastic early reviews for Attack of the Clones were, in the aftermath of The Phantom Menace?). Lastly, considering that Dark of the Moon won’t hit theaters for another six weeks or so, it would’ve been much more shocking had an early negative review of the film been released. You have to imagine that the studio wouldn’t want any bad word of mouth circulating this early.

With all that said: this early review is still a good sign for those hoping that Dark of the Moon could be a great conclusion to possibly the most financially-successful franchise that’s ever been assaulted by critics. The trailer for the film was pretty impressive, there are a number of noteworthy additions to the cast – and, with added bonuses for Transformers fans (like Leonard Nimoy voicing Sentinel Prime) this could actually be a pretty rockin’ finale.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon arrives in theaters this summer on July 1st.

  1. Underdeveloped characters all around and another jacked up plot. Did anyone ever consider what would happen to the Earth if a planet twice it’s size all of a sudden appeared as close as it did in the movie? Cybertron’s gravity would result in catastrophic events on Earth. And how are humans going to rebuild a planet that is so far more technologically advanced than we? And what was the plan to enable billions of humans to work on Cybertron when it has no atmosphere? It would be a logistical mess. They should have just kept things simple. Pull Cyberton into the Earths atmosphere to kill all the humans and then take Earths resources to rebuild Cybertron. No need to over think it. I missed the Megan Fox’s character and the entertaining chemistry she shared with Sam. No chemistry in this one. I liked in the previous movies how they gave the American Military a good showing. In this one they make the U.S. look like punks giving into the Decepticons demands and a rogue group of warriors have to help the Autobots get the job done. I’m not sure how they’ll do another one since they killed off every main character from the Decepticons.

    • like the ultimate doom episode of the Transformers G1 cartoon right? i think John Malkovich would have played a great “Dr Archevil”.

    • The film referenced the classic Transformers G1 episodes “The Ultimate Doom” and “Megatron’s Master Plan”, both being three-part specials. The hundreds of other pillars sent into space were stabilizing the gravitational field so Earth wouldn’t undergo any catastrophic events. The military in each movie are glorified, and they weren’t made to look like “little punks” just because they backed down from evil, combat-efficient, alien robots (in reality, they would have done the same thing they did in the film).

  2. I thought the movie sucked. The entire film could have lasted 45 mins yet lasted 2 hours and 35 mins. The special effects were great and 3d was stunning but the plot was really bad. I liked the girl, she was hot but she wasn’t megan fox. Basically this was transformers 2 made over agin. The exact same thing happened just in a different order. Instead of trying to live a normal life (like sam did in the 2nd movie), nobody wants sam to be the superhero and he has to fight to get their approval to save the world once again. My wife and I walked out of the theater on opening day feeling like the movie was too long and other than the 30 minute action scene; feeling like we waisted our time.

  3. I think people are saying this is the best one yet according to the amount of action and the running length of the movie, not because of the actual quality of the content.

    • HUGELY DISAPPOINTED. BAY AINT GOT A CLUE.THIS FILM SHOULD BE CALLED THE ADVENTURES OF SAM WITWICKEE. THEY COULD HAVE GIVEN THE NEW TRANSFORMERS MORE SCREEN TIME. WHO THE HELL WANTS TO SEE SAM GETTIN A JOB.AND THA SCENE WHEN SAM KILLS STARSCREAM IS A JOKE. WHY ARE THEY MAKIN HIM THE STAR . ITS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT TRANSFORMERS. I RECOMMEND YOU ALL WATCH TRANSFORMERS THE MOVIE (THE CARTOON). THAT IS BETTER THAN ALL THREE MOVIES PUT TOGETHER. I WANTED TO SEE HOT RED, THE DINOBOTS SUPERIOR AND MENASOR, RUMBLE, UNICRON. ITS A TRAGEDY IN MY EYES HE NEVER INTRODUCED ANY OF THESE CHARACTERS INSTEAD ALL WE GOT WAS SAM AND HIS ADVENTURES, BAD HUMOUR. ALL WASTED.trash

      • Are you kidding? Are you really unleashing the fury of the caps lock just because they had a human protagonist and told a story about his personal life. There was more then enough robots in this movie to keep me happy.

    • Just shut up. Please.

  7. Listen up folks save the money for some other movie. I tried to tell my brother in law like 10 times but he insisted and wanted me to go see this pointless movie with him. We even saw the 3D version true me it didn’t make any difference. The series was already finished after the first movie and they should’ve stopped there.

The movie is pointless you have a bunch of robots that are 100 feet tall fighting each other, pretty much that’s the entire story. Oh lets not forget the stupid little robot twins that are nothing more then an annoyance every time they come on the screen. At least Megan Fox made a wise move by not being in this ridiculous addition to an already failed movie franchise. She might be more then just a pretty face after all.

The movie might be cool for 12-15 year-olds with the mentality of 7-11 year-olds. Unfortunately, I do think that my brother-in-law may have been dropped on his head too many times as a child because he liked it. In all honesty he’s not the brightest candle in the box.

    • You’re not the brightest candle in the box either. Candles in the box should not be bright at all, otherwise they’d all just melt as they burned.

You don’t go to a movie like Transformers to have your intellect stimulated, you go to numb your mind.

    • Okay, you may not like Transformers, along with probably hundreds of thousands of others, but you need to realize that millions (and I mean MILLIONS) of people love seeing these films. Respect their opinions and we, fans, will respect yours. However, you don’t need to resort to criticizing our intellect. Plenty of Transformers fans are intelligent people and many, MANY adults love them as well. So, to say that Transformers may only appeal to those within the age range of 12 to 15 years old is completely erroneous.

Another thing, please get your facts correct before criticizing. Transformers are nowhere near 100 feet tall (Optimus Prime is 28 feet tall, and he’s large, so yeah). Not even Devastator from Transformers 2 makes it up to the mark of 100 feet tall.

  9. I have to ask, is there a post-credits scene after the movie? Because i notice people still sitting at the credits roll. I saw twice so far & can’t make up my mind of which film i liked more, the first film or this one, lol. Optimus Prime kicked ass in this one. I loved the ending when Optimus dispatched both Megatron & Sentinel prime w/ Megatron’s gun, lol. Loved that scene. To me, i felt like Optimus gave Megatron No Mercy just as Megatron didn’t give to him in Transformers:The Movie(87). Too bad James Cameron is busy with the Avatar sequels, id like to see him pick up the franchise with a 4th film if one gets planned.

  10. honestly this is the worst movie so far… the first one was the best, thats my opinion. That girl Rosie is beautiful yeah but thats all… Megan is way much better than her she’s an action girl and in the same time she’s beautiful too. I think Rosie’s act ruined the movie she was so unnatural she was just standing like a barbie girl and I didn’t see any chemistry between her and Shia and that was annoying… About the script-it was good there are a lot of emotions in the movie and by the very end you don’t really know what would happened will they all die or not? What’s gonna happened with the planet Earth? Will the autobots win? I give the movie 4/5 just because Rosie can’t replace Megan and her act wasn’t good.

    • I couldn’t stand Rosie, why get a model that can’t act and what’s with those god damn lips of hers they look like she had too much steroids put in them. I am extremely disappointed that Megan Fox was not part of the movie at least there was chemistry between Shia and her. What was with Rosies wardrobe all white all the time? Megan was far better.

      • I agree. Rosie is useless, screaming and looking pretty while everyone is fighting for their lives. Megan got her hands dirty and still was beautiful. The first was the best. Too much going on here. Only thing I loved is Dutch putting on the smack down on the Russians and Optimus Prime laying waste to the Decepticons in the end. That’s how I see Optimus Prime!

        • And that’s also an invalid representation of Optimus Prime. He was never a bloodthirsty fascist like he is in the live-action movies. Even though I still love the films to death, he needs to convert back to his noble nature, which gives off the heroic essence better than the all-out rage-fueled killing machine.

  11. MB & ILM,
stop doing ugly robot faces like QUE and BRAINS.. LEADFOOT looks awful..

    • Brains was cute and Leadfoot was a badass. But Wheeljack’s design could’ve been altered to look like it did before in the prequel comics for the movie before he was damaged in battle.

  12. the movie is too lenghty n with lots of unnecessary stuff..the storyline was actually good but Bay’s use of tons of effects without any need ruined it. there are many gliches in story telling…the pace is not good
the funniest scene was when optimus prime got hanged up in some wires in the last minutes and he th HERO..the best of autobots was needed help of couple of other autobots to get rid of those wires ..how can u expect someone like thet to fight senitel prime and megatron. the effects were pae excellence ..but its not able to enjoy too much of them altogether ..i wasnt able to recall much after watchin it. ..michael bay may think more about story than jst effects next time. ..

  13. This was genuinely the worst film I have ever seen. Far from being the best in the trilogy this was dreadful, and to be honest I did not have very high expectations after the second film. Megan Fox was gorgeous, really the girl next door and Huntington is not. The dialogue was often blocked out by raging battle scenes. Really a disappointment, and again after the 2nd film that is saying something. There was no chemistry between the actors.

  14. Saw the movie for the first time yesterday. Maybe getting the only seats available, 2nd row from the screen did not do justice to the movie. Action pace was so fast, I had a hard time trying to adjust my eyes to take everything in. I love the movie though, but that’s me, a sucker for any Transformers movie. Saying that, I wished they didn’t bring in that model to play the lead. It was ridiculous how she was dressed in white practically throughout the whole movie and ran with heels that could poke your eye out. There were some touching moments that brought tears to my eyes, especially the scene where Bumblebee was about to be executed and man, Ironhide got thrashed so early in the show.

  15. ugly robots and rosie one thing i didnt like about tansformers 3

  16. ugly robots and rosie two things i didnt like about tansformers 3

  17. I’m dizzy. just a bad movie in principal. a non-existent plot with 25 or more mini plots that lead to weak conclusions or danglers or nothing at all: i.e., remember that watch on Sams’ wrist, what was that about. or Wang, totally necessary. Loud and distracting visual effects make me wonder in anything was actually filmed on location besides the city backdrop and Sam himself. My frickin god that was a pain to get through. I would hate to have to work under a director like the guy who did this, all the while knowing he doesn’t have a clue. Not that I’m a huge transformers fan, but if you are, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by seeing this movie and leaving yourself in this state of disarray.

  18. When I first took a glance at both the trailer’s and the plot for Transformers 3 I vowed to not spend a single penny to view it. After seeing it for free became my only satisfation, I figured I’d save the world my own way by throwing out this warning to all loyal Transformers fans. The movie was just plain terrible as forseen. The plot was so easy to figure out so there were no surprises throughout the film. The acting was horrible, the best it had was the voice talent of Leonard Nimoy who was given one line for sure he would remember from his Star Trek days. The effects were nothing special, seen much better from older films. In all this entire Transformers run was about the biggest disappointment that has ever been thrown out there. A big slap in the face to loyal fans from the early 80′s and forward. I am actually very happy to know that there will not be any more movies created by the ones who produced and directed these films. It seemed like they just read some footnotes and went with that. Hopefully some real Transformers fans will step up and create something to repair any damage these movies have caused to the Transformers line. I personally will dismiss these films as actual Transformers movies and consider them as by-products, fakes, knock offs of what the Transformers really are. One last note, to anyone out there who has never seen the original g1 series or read one of its comic books, go out and do so now. You will see why the Transformers were the best toy line the 80′s had to offer and why they, like Optimus Prime and Megatron will never be destroyed forever.

  19. Did not like the new girl in the movie! Megan Fox all the way, she is an action girl. Watched the movie with my sons and we all agree that the movie is confusing with all the little plots and they missed Megan!

  20. in my opinion it was a huge disappointment, because there was no Megan.
