Michael Bay Scouting Locations for Transformers 3

Published 5 years ago by , Updated February 15th, 2014 at 4:26 pm,

In a recent update on Michael Bay’s official news page, the director reported on a recent visit to Haiti while also dropping a small update on the upcoming third installment of the Transformers franchise.

Speaking about Transformers 3:

“Busy scouting – Chicago, Detroit, and Washington D.C. for Transformers last week. Things are going well. The script is feeling very different from the other two.”

The director also posted a series of pictures from his trip to Haiti as well and commented on the aftermath:

“One of the worst stories I heard from people down there – because of the huge lack of education in Haiti – when the earthquake struck – everyone ran inside buildings most likely to their graves.”

It’s going to be interesting to discover what’s “different” about the new script. I genuinely enjoyed the first film but the follow-up was definitely a misfire. Hopefully by “different” Bay means “has a less convoluted plot” and “more characters worth caring about.”

That said, it’s hard to think of many films that have been shoved out the door as fast as Transformers 3 and still managed to be “very different” from their predecessors. Especially considering Revenge of the Fallen made $830 Million worldwide, despite being panned by critics. What incentive would the studio have for changing up a formula that is profitable?

Are you encouraged by the notion that the script for Transformers 3 is “feeling very different”? What changes would you like to see made?

  1. Different huh. Hopefully he means less homeboy crap and less humping of Fox's legs.

  2. I don't know why everyone slams Transformers 2 so bad. I thought it was a fun movie to watch. Yes, there was some stupid parts to it, but all in all I enjoyed all the action and giant robots duking it out. It was what it set out to be: summer popcorn flick. I expect Transformers 3 to be more of the same, but we could do without the humping robots or crying Bumblebee.

  3. Can't wait for the third!!! Both TransFormers movies were great!

  4. The first movie was a homerun for Bay, surprisingly, but he got just about everything right with it, for it being a perfectly well made popcorn summer blockbuster. The second one had moments of coolness in it, but overall was disappointing and doesn't work as a whole movie. I think he should have stopped with the first one, it had a perfect ending to it anyways, but if he does make a third one I'm interested in seeing just how different he could make it be. And yes, less immature and obnoxious humor (which he went all out on in the sequel) would be a plus.

  5. Transformer 3 ?? Why the heck aren't they doing a reboot all ready ?

  6. $830 million worldwide… Thats why and i'm pretty sure that if you were getting a hefty sum of that you would have never asked that question.

  7. Script?!!! What's that?

  8. I don't know but they say it exists, let's subject it to the sniff test??

  9. Blah, blah, blah… I have failed at making it in the film industry, so i will bash a movie that i know nothing about just because people said the last movie was bad…

In the grand scheme of cinema the past 2 transformers films are FAR from horrible. Never seen so much negative criticism of films that can easily be described as average.

    Move on people!

  10. Because the first 2 films were good and the majority of people that realize that their taste in films has nothing to do with their self-worth want to see a 3rd movie.

  11. Who are you referring to? No one who writes for this site has tried to “make it in the film industry.”

  12. If he makes it anywhere near as good as the first then he will save face from that last piece of crap he made. The first one was decent and good. The second one was horrible.

I'm not going to hold my breath about the third one but I hope he sticks to his word.

  13. I read a transformers 3 script that was leaked to the internet (whether it was real or not Im not sure, but it seemed professional). I personally didnt care for it, but thats mostly because Im expecting Unicron and the Dinobots and they werent anywhere in it. but it really wasnt bad, and yes, it was very different from the first 2 films.

  14. Ha, I put down my cash to see these movies and for all the effort and cash that went into them, the source material was better than this derivative stuff. I want to know one thing David, where's my millions for mediocrity?

  15. ummm BAY never intended to do the things he did with revenge of the fallen

the studio was to blame in my humble opinion

seriously people who say that his movies arent about acting have apparently not seen
armegeddon or bad boys 1 and 2

also they cut the editing process of the second movie short since the studio was rushing to release it on time i wish that the studio would have delayed its release and edited the second movie more

transformers 3 sounds like that even though they realize they made 830 mil with the the second movie they also know that the movie was horribly put together.

  16. You should have made avatar then of you were expecting millions with a mediocre story lol… Sorry avatar fans couldn't resist myself there.

  17. In all honesty (even from a tf fanboy like me) i doubt that it will be different. Well maybe just a little since theres different writers now but still prety much the same… Bigger bots, bigger explosions and if it could make me laugh then yeah my behind will be seated for this movie. He'll probably even work in the haiti quake as some sort of destruction caused by a decepticon. I just want to see more scenes like the forest one and less of the humans… Shia did make me laugh though at times.

  18. Hopefully, Bay will take advantage of the full range of locations available in or near Detroit— and which would still come with the tax incentives offered by the state. On top of the urban and industrial sites his crew scouted in the past, he could also select locations such as:

    1) The Detroit salt mines, which could double for almost any cavernous area… offering over 100 cave-like miles.

    2) Saugatuck State Park, (if driving, 3 hours away, but flying the crew would only take an hour), but could double for almost any beach or coast.

    3) Lux Arbor Reserve (a 2 hour drive from northern Oakland county), a swamp/bog that comes with a number of prepared roads and isolated filming locations.

This is just the tip of the iceberg… but if he's looking to diversify locations in the thrid installment, then he's got a ton of potential filming spots available in Michigan.

  19. @ David T.

Transformers 2 certainly had a lot of the things we look for in summer blockbusters – and nothing proves your point better than the amount of money the film made.

That said, calling the film a misfire is hardly the same as saying it was horrible.

But it did lack a sensible plot, even for a movie about alien cybernetic organisms, and Bay constantly traded giant explosions for any meaningful character development. Even Kurtzman and Orci have admitted that they never had the opportunity to polish the script because of the writers strike.

I say all this as a fan of the franchise, and as someone who would like to see the third film be a step forward not backward for Transformer lovers.

  20. Revenge of the Fallen was written in thirty days. There was a rather large writers' strike in the middle of production.

Shia LaBeouf's F-150 was T-boned last spring by a doofus running a red light. The truck flipped up while he had his hand outside the window holding onto the roof. The TRUCK rolled onto his hand. He has fingers that will never work right again and at least one that may never work at all.

It's a miracle this film was even finished!

  21. Redqueenar… I'll do that (though I guess I need to get registred, first)!

  22. Redqueenar… I'll do that (though I guess I need to get registred, first)!
