Transformers 3 is Looking for Extras

Transformers Street Battle Transformers 3 is Looking for Extras

DreamWorks has begun the casting process for Transformers 3, and the company has released a Los Angeles-based Craigslist ad calling for extras to join the production. I can bring a unique outlook to this story that few other film writers can: I’ve actually been an extra on many different television shows (Parks and Recreation, Glee, etc.) and feature films (the upcoming Due Date, etc.).

No experience is necessary to apply, and both union and non-union workers will be accepted. The production is paying extras 200 dollars per day, which is a ridiculously high rate for a background actor. Speaking from experience on the non-union side, extras (aka “background actors”) generally get paid around 100-120 dollars for an eleven or twelve hour day on a TV show or film set. Perhaps the extra money is thrown in as incentive to tolerate potential abuse from Michael Bay, a notoriously difficult director known for firing employees at the drop of a hat.

I’ve never personally worked with Bay, but I’ve heard horror stories from other extras about how the working environment is extremely intense on his sets. That being said, word around Hollywood is that the director is tough but fiercely loyal to his workers if they prove themselves to him; apparently his directorial style is incredibly fast-paced, but if you can handle his constant yelling and thrive in that environment, he gains respect for you. And to be completely honest, background actors don’t have the hardest jobs in the world – essentially, you get to hang out on a film set and are occasionally called upon to walk (or, in this case, probably run) in front of the camera.

Being an extra is generally a pretty cool experience. You get to learn a lot about how a film is created, and as film fans it provides a one-of-a-kind insight into how different directors operate and interact with actors and the crew. If you live in the Los Angeles area and are brave enough to join the fray, I’d recommend giving the casting people at DreamWorks a call at 1-877-464-9526. (Click the Craigslist ad at the bottom of the article for more information.)

Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman opted against returning as writers for the third installment, leaving the duties to co-writer Ehren Kruger. Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, and Tyrese Gibson are all reprising their roles. We previously reported that filming will begin in May, which sounds about right since the Craigslist ad says the film is in a “pre-casting” stage. Here’s hoping for a more coherent film than we saw in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Transformers 3 is set for a July 1st, 2011 release.

  1. I have actor friends who make livings being background actors, then star in tiny little short and feature films to gain even more experience.

$200 a day? Dang, I only rarely get paid that as an editor! Usually it's $125-$150 a day! Man, Florida production doesn't pay enough.

I only hope Transformers 3 is better than 2. 1 was fun for the most part, but 2 was just… meh.

    • Quick question: what websites do you use for extra’s?

  2. Let Michael bay cast. Line up the youngens! Jk

they should be looking for a script.

  3. I would so call if I lived in LA… GOD I hope Bay does this movie right !!!

  4. Just think…. you could be an extra in what will undoubtedly be a REALLY terrible movie.

    Pass!

  5. I've worked in farms, fast-foods places, factory's, hotels, clubs, etc where i've pulled 14-16 hour days and made less then 200 dollars a day. Now i don't know how much money you make but 200 dollars a day for walking/running on set is a heck of a deal no matter what movie it is. Even if i weren't a fan, even if this was Dragonball evolution, even if this were a teletubbie movie i'd surely be in it if given the chance… As lots of others would too.

  6. This movie needs a super secret weapon Transformer and his title should be Writer. Maybe Matt Senreich could give them a hand…

  7. Good point. that is pretty good money. I would probably do it to and then hope any scene I was in got cut. lol

  8. Touche lol…

  9. Hannah montana has “writers” lol… His name should atleast be along the lines of “Oscar Nominee” (for all the money it got i'm pretty sure they could afford it). I mean in all honesty eventhough i loved both transformers movies (they made me laugh) i know that a good amount of the people who comment and work on this site could write a waaaaaaaaay better script then revenge of the fallen. Either way i will definately catch TF3.

  10. I, on the other hand, am not so sure I will see this one. I saw the first two at midnight premiers…. but the 2nd one was so atrocious I will be skipping this one until I at least hear some positive reviews from the media, and more importantly, my friends. If this one gets blasted for being as silly as the 2nd one…. I can honestly say I will never see it.

  11. lol..So true
I know what you mean, it's heart breaking when you know it could be so much more than it is. I know some are such big fans they can overlook the glaring faults. I sprung for the second one for my family to see in IMAX because they liked the first one, but I'll probably grab the next one out of a vending machine unless reviews report a much improved experience. Home theater has just about made commercial theaters obsolete except for something special. R.O.F. for me and the family wasn't it…

  12. Although living in Canada I applied and sent photos…. I look like 'Beaker' from the muppet show… but imagine he is 39 years old, needs glasses and really let himself go… so when Tranny 3 comes out and you see a fat 'Beaker' running away, hair standing up and yelling “mememememememe!!” … that would be me, ExtraKev, going for a Razzie in behalf of the third installment.

  13. If I were on this set, my disgust with Bay and everything that's been done to the memory of Transformers would be so contagious, that if I wasn't fired immediately, my ire would spread through the ranks of the set. My extra brothers and sisters would rise, and we would steal all the cars on the lot, and we'll construct the terrorcons! They will bring justice to those who've tainted our childhood cartoon dreams of one day seeing a live-action version of the transformers. Not THREE pale failures.

  14. I can be a Crapicon, because that's the direction this franchise is going. LOL

  15. This is a scam guys. The SAG union rate is $134 for 8 hours. (yes, you usually make more than that because after 8 hours you get overtime, you get paid mileage, blah blah blah.) Production only has to hire a certain amount of union extras (I believe its 30) and then all the rest they will hire non-union and pay minimum wage. Production will sometimes offer special ability or bikini girl extras higher rates, but they're not gonna give every faceless schmo $200. Also, Big budget movies are not “precast” through Craigslist posts. Central Casting has thousands of extras on file and don't need to go hunting them down well before production has started. The Craigslist post is a scam.

  17. Thank you Yo Blow. I was wondering about that. Maybe i suck, but i like transformers, and it sounded like good money, which i need right now, so i called the number in the ad, it didn't tell me who i talked to and they did know info like that the film was beginning in may, but they wanted to charge me a 98 dollar fee. I told them i would call them back as i didn't know if it was a scam or not. Can anyone point the way yo some valid sights for extra's casting?

  18. I don’t know where this $200 a day thing started, I was just at the casting call in Chicago and they offer regular extra rates plus overtime if needed– this was also a craigslist ad and not a scam and you do not have to pay a fee to audition, just bring yourself and a pen and possibly a book or friend, the wait was nearly 5 hrs.
