Transformers DOTM Stunt Featurette New Transformers 3 Base Jump Stunt Featurette

One sequence from the Transformers: Dark of the Moon trailers that has no doubt grabbed viewers’ attention is the base jumping sequence involving our favorite N.E.S.T. soldier Lt. Lennox (Josh Duhamel) and his squad, as they try to reclaim downtown Chicago from Decepticon occupation.

During a Transformers 3 preview event our own Roth Cornet confirmed that the 3D sequences in Michael Bay’s third (and presumably final) Transformers movie are pretty spectacular, not least of which is the base jumping scene. Today, we have a behind the scenes featurette from the film, showcasing the crazy team of guys who like jumping off the world’s most dizzying heights in nothing but flying squirrel suits.

About a year ago, we posted video of the Transformers 3 Chicago shoot, which featured the base jumpers making their leap from Chicago’s iconic Sears Tower. Needless to say, it was a crazy sight to see – especially since the sequence will utilize real people performing (and filming) the stunt, the likes of which – base jumping in a crowded urban area – is pretty unheard of anywhere except in the context of a Michael Bay film.

While the faraway view of the base jumpers doing their thing was tantalizing at the time, the intensity of their stunt takes on whole new meaning when viewed from a first-hand perspective – which is actually how the featurette below presents it:

Say what you will about Michael Bay films (and people tend to), you cannot deny that the man knows how to do action properly, and thrillingly. Over the course of his career, Bay has certainly grown in terms of the action and stunt sequences he’s put together, to the point that I feel (relatively) safe saying that no other director does it better. That fact alone should make Transformers 3 worth the 3D ticket price. Whether the story and/or “humor” will be improved upon remains to be seen for now.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon has been pushed up to a June 29th release date in both 3D and IMAX 3D.

  1. I should think any other director would have used CGI for urban base jumping.
Michael Bay earns major kudos for insisting these details look real and
he knows there the only way to do that is if they are real.

Michael gets more than his share of criticism but when it
comes to action he is a virtuoso and in a class by himself.

  2. This is why Michael Bay is a good director!! In today’s day, what other director would actually do that besides Christopher Nolan and maybe James Cameron? Michael Bay isn’t the best when it comes to the story and script, but the man can direct the hell out of an action sequence. I reward Bay for his ambition. He’s a great director.

  3. Rad, dude. Period.

  4. Excellent!

  5. Kudos to Michael Bay, and the guys who did the jump, TF3 is going to rock theaters from coast to coast. Cant wait.

Couldnt agree more. His action sequences are more over the top than most any other director out there today.
