Alan Tudyk Joins Transformers 3

Paramount Pictures has confirmed that Firefly veteran Alan Tudyk is the latest popular TV actor to take on a role in Michael Bay’s latest explosion-friendly giant robots flick, Transformers 3.

Tudyk will join fellow TV stars Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy) and Jamie Kennedy (The Ghost Whisperer) as the latest additions to the Transformers 3 cast.  They will round out a crew that features Transformers 1 & 2 stars Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Kevin Dunn, and Julia White as well as three well-respected newcomers, Frances McDormand (Burn After Reading), Ken Jeong (The Hangover) and John Malkovitch (Jonah Hex).

Will one-dimensional human characters dominate the screen time of Transformers 3 much like they did in the first two CGI robot action pics?  If nothing else, some of the humans should be a bit more interesting this time around, due to the high caliber of the new performers joining the show.

Tudyk has already demonstrated a good deal of flexibility in the TV and movie roles he’s taken on.  He has the ability to be comically lovable (Firefly), amusingly oddball (Dodgeball), more on the serious side (V), and flat-out terrifyingly psychotic (Dollhouse).

Here’s hoping Tudyk’s role amounts to more than a poorly written cameo (a la Rainn Wilson (The Office) in Transformers 2).  Tudyk – unlike Wilson – has actually proven himself to be a versatile performer so it’d be a shame if Michael Bay just wastes his talents.

Between Tudyk now being a member of the Transformers 3 cast and Shia LaBeouf’s recent comments assuring fans that the film will be an improvement on Transformers 2, is it possible that Michael Bay might be on the right track with his (possibly NOT in 3D) new giant robot adventure?

Transformers 3 arrives in theaters in the U.S. on July 1, 2011.

  1. I think you mean “Steve the Pirate” Tudyk

    • I have heard he’s planning to at long last legally change his first name to “Steve the Pirate,” truth be told. ;)

  2. All time favourite Tudyk role: Wat, in A Knight’s Tale. Seeing more recognizable names in TransREfomers 3 makes me worry for their reputable careers. Frances McDormand? Please, sweetie, no. They need you more than you need them. Somebody get Joel Coen on the phone! NOW!

  3. While I love Tudyk (Mainly for his rold as Alpha on Dollhouse-trully remarkable performance and the best thing about that show)
I fear T3 will be even worse than T2 (which against all odss was miles miles worse that the first one) This hypothesis stems from the addition of 3 “well” known actors in what SHOULD be a story centreded around the actual robots, not boring humans

Curse you Bay! curse you for ruining my childhood dreams

  4. They shouldn’t call those movies transformers !
They transformed them from robot based to human based…boring stuff ! Sadly but true, add to all that a director who has no idea of how to film a good action scene..and there we are.

Mr.Bay ‘s close up’s and quick cuts for giving the audience a feel of not seeing anything whats going on.

Like tudyk..hope he can make the best out of it !
