One thing I disagree with is that crap like the two Transformers films are acceptable representatives of “entertainment films”. Who said that entertainment accompanied by pop corn has to be stupid? Iron-Man and the Dark Knight are recent examples of what a film can achieve by being pop corn entertainment AND a well written, directed and acted piece of action/sci-fi/adventure cinema, at the same time.

Or, maybe, the Transformer movies are intentionaly THAT stupid and in BAD TASTE because they are intended as PARODY of the genre they supposedly represent. Which is just as bad, Transformers is an arrow in the arsenal of the “highbrow critic” that merely dismisses any kind of summer film that happens to feature SFX, and thoughtlessly lambasts films that aren’t of course excellent, but still solid pieces of genre cinema, like Wolverine and Terminator Salvation.

I just saw it and thought it was a good action movie…enjoyed it, laughed a little and was in awe of the special effects and got to see Prime kick some @$$ this time around..didn’t find Turturo’s character as annoying this time..3.5/5 for me

Yeah, and let me say once again, I’m glad I’m married and done with that whole scene. Hopefully I can raise my daughter such that killer cyborgs are less attractive than good men.

Went to see Transformers 2 last night (finally). I think I would rate it a little higher than Vic, but not much. There were some good things going on, but much of the first half of the movie is packed with gratuitous material of one sort or another, IMO. Gratuitous in that it does not advance the plot or develop the characters. I guess it’s disappointing in that it had the potential to have been an astoundingly great movie. As it stands, there’s a lot of spectacle, but the potentially interesting story is treated as incidental. Obviously, that doesn’t stop people from seeing it, but it’s still a shame.

The main geek-related problems I had were pretty much the same as the first — these cybernetic organisms are the culmination of millenia of technology, are able to travel through space, survive atmospheric re-entry, but do not make extensive use of energy weapons or force fields and can be chumped by conventional human weaponry (special ammo rounds, but still low-tech compared to the robots). Sure, it all looks good on the screen (I was still able to enjoy the fights), but it’s a legit question. Anyone seen an answer in the book(s)? I can already hear people screaming “it’s just a movie!” but that doesn’t mean I have to turn my brain off.

Anyone else notice that the aircraft carrier that got destroyed was resurrected to provide air support later? Both were clearly marked “74.”

Was just playing off of your comments about the kind of men women seem to be drawn to … qualities that a T-800 would have … I think this is one of those times where the humor did not translate well into the blog format …
