Short version: Just like super-sizing a McDonalds meal doesn’t make it taste any better, neither does giving us more of what was in the first film improve Transformers 2.

Screen Rant reviews Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Regular readers here at Screen Rant are familiar with my disdain for the first Tranformers movie. While many agree with me and others disagree vehemently – both sides have been expecting me to skewer Michael Bay’s Tranformers 2. I didn’t go in expecting much, and that may have actually caused me to not judge it quite as harshly as a lot of other reviewers are doing.

The (very thin) story here is that of Sam (Shia Lebouf) heading off to college, trying to go back to a semblance of a normal life – where you don’t have giant, talking robots that turn into cool cars. He’ll be leaving behind tough biker chick Michaela (Megan Fox) but they’ll continue a long distance relationship through the wonders of the internet.
Before Sam leaves, he discovers a shard of the “All Spark” is still in his possession – when he touches it, it has some sort of effect on him and is shown to still have the power to animate mechanical objects. Thinking he has it safely secured, Sam heads off to college where he meets his roommate Leo (Ramon Rodriguez), a guy who runs a website dedicated to robot sightings which is not nearly as popular as he imagines it to be.
It turns out the Autobots have been working with the government trying to track down the vestiges of the Decepticon robots that are still on Earth. It looks like the Decepticons have been searching for something, but no one (not even the Autobots) know what that might be.
Of course the last thing that will happen to Sam is a “normal” college experience, and he is soon drawn back into the world of the Transformers. He’s joined by his reluctant roommate Leo and of course soon enough by Michaela and the buffoonish (now ex) government agent from the first film, Simmons (John Turturro).
From here the whole point is to stop the Decepticons (led by the ancient robot called “The Fallen”) from getting their claws on a device that is of course a danger to all of humanity.
And it takes a really, really long time.
In Revenge of the Fallen there’s more of everything that was in the first film: More robots, more explosions, more soldiers, more battle scenes, more juvenile (and inappropriate for kids) humor and more foul language.
In the end it doesn’t make this film any better than the first one – it just makes it feel longer. I was surprised to learn that this film is only 6 minutes longer than the first one… it feels a LOT longer than that. Thirty to forty minutes could have been cut pretty easily – it’s a movie about giant robot battles, does it NEED to be two hours and twenty minutes long? Even the scenes most people go to see, the battle scenes, drag on far too long.
So what was good? I liked the scenes involving the military, great stuff. I liked that Bay pulled back the cameras on the robot battles so you can actually tell what’s happening (although the shots were too tight once again at the end of the film) – and about the best robot fight took place in the forest. Not “awesome” but probably the best thing in the film.
On the bright side, I actually liked Kevin Dunn as Sam’s dad in this one, although the mom annoyed the heck out of me again. Aside from the “humor” I’ll describe below, I thought some of it was actually OK – even Turturro wasn’t quite as annoying. The CGI was excellent, although at this point for a film like this that should be a given.
What wasn’t so good? Well, beyond “everything else,” a big pet peeve of mine about the first film was the juvenile humor that I didn’t think fit with the action. In the sequel, most of the “humor” happens during the first third of the film and thankfully it’s not as prevalent later on (although it still pops up from time to time). In this film, instead of masturbation jokes, robots “peeing” fluid on people and acting like teenage girls hiding in a back yard, we have dog humping (twice), a robot humping Megan Fox’s leg, gigantic robot testicles, farting robots and a college professor who’s introductory lecture is limited exclusively to veiled sexual references.
There’s also TONS of inappropriate language for the under-10 crowd that is sure to show up for this movie – including but not limited to a**hole, pu**y, ball sack, b*itch and sh*t. And of course in addition to the lingering shots of Megan Fox, there are suggestive scenes with actress Isabel Lucas, including an obviously carefully crafted “peek” shot of her rear/crotch.
I only mention all this because over and over and over again I’ve heard in defense of the first film: “It’s a kids movie!!”
Right.
And despite all the action I found myself kind of bored… I actually almost nodded off at one point. Again: TOO LONG.
Oh, and yes, there are a couple of robots in the film (the “Twins”) that talk and look like something out of an old minstrel show – that was pretty hard to fathom. I could possibly see if they acted like rappers (due to absorbing what they’ve seen on MTV or something), but ignorant, Southern, gold-toothed robots who can’t read? It was reminiscent of the two black crows from Disney’s Dumbo (which was made back in 1941). Of course one of the actors providing the voices is black, so I’d be curious to hear his take on all this.
So, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is more of the same. If you thought the first one “rocked” you’ll probably think the same of this one; if you thought the first one was terrible, you’ll probably think this one is even worse. Me, I had such low expectations going in and already knew what to expect based on the first film. I didn’t have such a violent reaction to it – although I certainly don’t intend to ever watch it again.
If you plan on bringing kids, I would highly recommend you check this out yourself before bringing them.

Well for starters I really liked it. I liked the humor in it and the fight scenes. But we took our 6yo son with us and he didn’t like it as much as number1 he said because optimus died. Think it is mainly because there is so much adult minded jokes that he just didn’t get it.
But all in all I really liked it and I am wanting to go see it again. But I don’t know about leting my son watch it that much it is pretty graphic.
I HAVE A GOOD REVIEW AND A BAD REVIEW-THIS IS MY GOOD ONE-I LOVED THE TIMESPENT MAKING THE FILM-WITH CRITICS AND FANS HOUNDING AND THE TIME IT TOOK GOING OVER CGI DAILIES WAS BEYOND SUFFERING, GOOD JOB BAY-ACTION WAS ON POINT, THE ROBOTS WERE AWSOME, THE HUMAN INTERACTION WAS VERY GOOD AND THERE WAS HUMOR THAT KEPT ME LAUGHING THE WHOLE TIME..THEY INCLUDED THE MATRIX OF LEADERSHIP, AND THEY INFUSED KEY THINGS THAT INTERWOVEN THE MOVIE WITH THE ORIGINAL CARTOON TOO A CERTAIN EXTENT,ALL IN ALL GREAT MOVIE FOR THE SUMMER..BUT I DO HAVE A DARK SIDE..YOULL SEE IT IN MY BAD REVIEW…
@Guy P – “Good thing I don’t pay attention to snooty film critics who wouldn’t know a good summer action flick even if Megatron dropped down and planted in their ass.”
So that’s why you are reading the review and making your own comments? I just never understand why people do that. ‘I don’t agree with anythign you say but I’m going to read every word you write and then claim it to be wrong!’
I HAVE A GOOD REVIEW AND A BAD REVIEW-THIS IS MY BAD REVIEW-LOVE THAT THE ROBOTS ARE SOO DETAILED AND TRANSFORMATIONS LOOK LIKE IT TOOK MONTHS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WILL GO TO WHERE, THATS COOL DONT GET ME WRONG BUT ITS TOO MUCH, TOO MUCH TO TAKE IN, THERES TOO MANY PEICES TO FOLLW TO THE EXTENT YOU HAVE WHAT I CALL”OPTICAL OVERLOAD” TOO MANY DETAILS AND MOVING MECHANICAL STUFF CAUSE YOU TO WONDER WHAT AM I LOOKING AT THE FACE THE BACK THE FRONT WHERE THE HECK, WELL MAYBE …SEE?TOO TOO MUCH DETAIL, EVEN THOUGH YOU HAD AM IMMENSE SETTING YOU CANT DO CLOSE UPS ON HIGHLY DETAILED ROBOTS,ITS TOO MUCH TO TAKE IN.-I DONT GET HOW ALL OF A SUDDEN NEW AUTOBOTS ARE JUST PART OF THE TEAM,DO I FEEL INVESTED? Honestly, you people keep calling it stupid! How could you? First i would like to know how old are yous? because i do not believe that this film was really aimed at 30 year olds its a teen movie! Your review seems prejudice because you did not like the first so you did not expect much from this either so you failed at leaving your attitude behind. I believe that this movie will do good because loads of TEENS liked the first and will be rushing to watch it and wiill be amazed at how great it is!
@Gunsmith – what’s with the ALL CAPS treatment?
@Jason & Guy – Vic’s not a snobby guy, really read his reviews next time instead of just being pissed off that he disgrees wih you.
@General – I’m upset that Bay is so in love with his own way of doing things that he can’t sit back and shift his perspective a bit. I remember an interview about the first movie and he said that Optimus has flames on him because “I wanted them” and that the original carton was “dated”. Listen Mr. Bay, if you don’t respect the source material then don’t do the movie. Take a page from the producers of the New Star Trek movie on how to take an original franchise, breath new life into it, but still respect what came before.
Haha, that’s a good one Gunsmith (about the Bionicle-looking robots). I actually thought the same after watching the film.
Hey, I have a question, why does sometimes the robots transform really slow, and other times (during battle mostly) they do it pretty fast?
@Guy P
Nice mouth for a guy with a 13 year old daughter.
Vic
TR2, ASIDE FROM BEING ABOUT 15 MIN TO LONG, WAS A VISUAL MASTERPIECE. IT KILLS ME HOW EVERY CRITIC LOVES TO MESS WITH BAY. THE GUYS DONE 8 FILMS AND 7 OF THEM HAVE BEEN HUGE HITS, COUNTING THIS ONE BECAUSE I THINK THIS IS GOING TO BE HIS BIGGEST YET.
@IRONKNIGHT–YOU KNOW WHY?, BECAUSE OUT OF ALL THE TREATMENTS, MICHEAL BAY LEFT OUT THE TRANSFORMING SOUND EFFECT-THATS WHY THEY TRANSFORM SLOW AND FAST BECAUSE THEY ARE CONFUSED,– DO-BO-GAH-CHEE–SIMPLE AS THAT,OTHERWISE THEY ARE LIKE”WTF AM I DOING AGAIN, OH”..AND FURY-IM NOT MAD,IM NOT SHOUTING, ITS JUST HOW I ROLE,I RIGHT IN CAPS.BATMAN HAS COWL, SUPERMAN HAS A CAPE, GUMMY BEARS COME IN DIFFERENT COLORS, AND I WRITE IN CAPS, I WONT STOP..NEVER.
@ EJK. Which is why we will continue to see more of his action-packed but incoherent-plot films. I really do not want a Transformers 3, though, ’cause I think I have seen already all of it. I mean, what would be next, robotic sex?
@ EJK. Which is why we’ll most likely see a third one, but rest assured, I won’t pay to see anymore of this. I think I have seen enough, and by the time it gets released, who knows what brilliant idea will Mr Bay come up with. I mean, what’s next, sex between robots?
Your typical Transformer fan,,,

“@ LikeItMuch?,
Honestly, you people keep calling it stupid! How could you? First i would like to know how old are yous?”
^
Know your enemy Vic, its a frustrated 13 year old,,, LoL!!!
Huh? Oh, oops. Sorry for the double post but something showed when I clicked for the first one that said I had already post it, but I checked and it wasn’t there, and I know it appeared, so…
My boss types his emails in all caps, and he wonders why I never know what he’s written me in emails, because I don’t read them! lol
@kofi, it takes a whole lot more than just machinery to be in more than one movie to say that the content is similar…
@jasen
Don’t worry, I’ll fire vic, vic, pack up your stuff from the imaginary cubicle now!!
@Vic
Well my friends are going to watch it today, I’m “unfortunately” stuck here at work, lol, oh no, I’m going to be so sad I missed it… well, if they have the Avatar trailer I actually will be a little disappointed but somehow I doubt it… Do you know if it’s supposed to have it attached?
@ Ken J. Apparently there was no Avatar trailer attached to it, at least not where I saw the film. So, don’t worry, you’re not missing anything.
Gunsmith, when you type in CAPS the words all seem to run together in a hazy shade of who cares, I’m not reading this… Use caps all you like but I skip over your comments.
Getting alot of laughs at the diehard Trannys getting there nit in a snicker over bad reviews. I’d say get a life but we are clearly beyond that stage of the teenage experience.
I’ll say this,,, everything has a fanbase. Even shows like Jon & Kate Plus 8.
Let your tranny flag fly trannys.
Poop or not poop?,.. that is the question. A little bit of the juvenile dick jokes in the first one went a long way. A lot of dick jokes in this film are cringe worthy. In most of the fanboy forums this movie is getting lambasted as a piece of sh*t with a few geek-tastic money shots. Also Bay seems to be getting all the heat for the film’s shortcomings but where is the critisicm for the two new wondertwins O and K? I proudly rejoice in their Trekdom but it seems that their Trek-geist has gotten them a pass with the Axe body spray commercial, white trash appeal humor. I may add the “Step and feggit” robots getting all the heat as some sort of blatant racist sterotype are more or less the same portrail of african american youth in almost all of pop culture. Illiterate sounding, wisecracking, quick buck, braggart, hip hop stars are pushed on our nation’s youth by hollywood, the media, ect as some sort of ideal to aspire too, so I don’t get the ire directed at two cartoon robots when the media pushes the illiterate, gold toofisus, goofs on our kids every day in almost all the media targeted at them, from TV to Video Games To music to film. Frankly an educated African American doesn’t seem to sell with the predominatly White, ethnic Eastern European, Hollywood deal makers which is the real disgusting tragedy. I enjoyed the first one, especially on Blu_ray because I can easily fast forward thru all the Shia and Turturo scenes. This one is the first one on crack with no sense of restraint.
And the verdict is,………..POOP, steaming stinky,..POOP!!
@Iron Knight
Thanks, that’s all I needed to know.
@GUNSMITH
Uh – OK CAPSboy. I ain’t mad at ya. Just was hoping for a better reason, that’s all.
LOL>.. CAPSboy.
You what I liked about the first one?
My toys from my youth coming to life in a decent visual fashion. That and Megan Fox looking under the hood of the car and trying to figure out if it was a Mercedes or a Rolls.
The first one, the scenes with the bots were hard to follow, but I didn’t mind it because there were my toys.
Yet I also trust Vic’s takes on things and he’s never steered me wrong. From what I’ve seen here, I’d say I’ll wait till it hits pay per view unless my film club heads out to see it.
What’s with the name calling? Jeeze.
So you liked it and someone else didn’t. How does that merit using belittling language against another person for their opinion?
Kids kids kids… be kind and rewind.
Now this is a good Screen Rant thread except for all the name calling…bunch of stupid…er…stupids…
Vic I hope your deflector shields are set at maximum…
Anyone please…does Prime kick some butt in this or not? No spoilers just tell me yes or no..
Honestly! I don’t believe this movie was given a fare rating.
Firstly I would like to remark that you FAILED in leaving your attitude at the door and so there by being prejudice in your review. Secondly, How old are you?! This movie is for TEENS! The oldest people I expect this movie to be aimed at would be in their late 20’s. I know for a fact that teens will be rushing to this movie and will LOVE it.
“it did get pretty boring halfway through”
how did you think taht was boring and iron man wasn’t?
i mean i liked iron man and it was a cool movie but… come on
@greenknight. Yes, he kicks some ass, but also gets his kicked.
@ Likeitmuch?. I’m not exactly that old (let`s say I’m near 20s) and I found the film boring at times and overall awful.
“greenknight333″
i’m pretty sure optimus gets hit @$$ kicked
Hmmmm, what age group was Up aimed at? I took my 10 and 11 year olds and all of us liked that movie. Why can’t a movie be good even if it was aimed at younger audiences? It’s obvious that people want the robot action, effects, and Fox, so why not despense with the juvenile humor? I’m sure all who like this incarnation would also love it without the juvenile humor, and it would make even more money and praise from everyone.
@likeitmuch – brother, assuming you are a guy, what exactly are you looking for in a review? If you just want someone to spell out the plot for you then I would suggest reading the synopsis on IMDB. If you want someone’s opinion of the movie then find someone who writes pretty close to the way you think and go by that.
Thanks for the fine review Vic.
I am not going to see the film.
I am currently reading and enjoying the prequel novel to the original TF film Ghosts Of Yesterday by Alan Dean Foster and I will be reading his prequel to this film The Veiled Threat and his novelization to the sequel.
And by the way ,
The Transformers animated movie was made for kids too,
No cursing, no stupid humor ,and I Know plenty of adults that LOVED it!
Apparently TF2 made 16 million at it’s midnight showings in 3000 theaters according to BOM..WOW!!
@ LikeItMuch?
Yeah that makes sense…they go out and spend 200 million to make this movie and then spend another 75 million to market it just for the most crass and fickle demographic out there..
Ok on to more sensible posts…
Why is Prime such a p****y? In TOS I remember he was the goto guy for stopping Megatron and the others..I don’t get it…
