The rush of winter holiday movies in 2013 are bringing with them trailers for the big releases of spring/summer 2014, several of which have already gone live online. Indeed, this past week we’ve gotten our first looks at footage from 22 Jump Street, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and The Expendables 3; not to mention, the teaser for Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi Interstellar, which opens in the fall.

Speaking of Chris Nolan, his longtime director of photography (and Oscar-winner for Inception) Wally Pfister’s feature debut Transcendence now has its own minimalistic, yet intriguing teaser to show. Pfister’s directorial debut is a sci-fi drama/thriller centered around Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp), a scientist determined to push the envelope of artificial intelligence and engineer the world’s most powerful supercomputer – which he eventually does, though in a manner that he wouldn’t have predicted.

Whereas the teaser for Interstellar is tonally optimistic – with Matthew McConaughey narrating how humanity’s willingness to (literally) reach for the stars will be our salvation – the Transcendence preview is far moodier and eery, with Depp’s voiceover having a subtle yet distinctly ominous vibe, especially once he begins talking about achieving what he would call “transcendence” (but others would call “singularity”, i.e. the point when artificial intelligence eclipses human intelligence).

UPDATE: Here is a second teaser for Transcendence, featuring voiceover narration by Morgan Freeman:

Transcendence originated with a script that made the 2012 Hollywood Black List for Best Unproduced Screenplays and was penned by Jake Paglen, who is now writing the sequel to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. It wouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that Paglen’s Transcendence draft feature elements of horror/philosophy like Scott’s film, based on the teaser and what we know of the plot; not to mention, Pfister’s key role in establishing Nolan’s dark brand of cinema.

Rounding out the impressive cast for Transcendence are Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3), Paul Bettany (Mortdecai), Morgan Freeman (Oblivion), Cillian Murphy (In the Heart of the Sea) and Kate Mara (House of Cards).

Transcendence opens in regular and IMAX theaters on April 18th, 2014.

  1. this is some scarey shyt, ‎Ray Kurzweil’s predictions coming true

    • Haha…i just asked for that book for Christmas

    • Ray Kurzweil predicted that humans and AI becoming merged would be for the good, not the bad. This is just another typical Hollywood fear-mongering anti-tech movie. I for one won’t be watching it.

  2. Wow, I’m way more interested now.

  3. Crossover with Terminator and I’m on board! This could be Skynet’s prequel!!! *sigh* hollywood needs to hire me

    • Sorry, but I like more brains than what Terminator has to offer.

    • Or the Matrix

  4. This is going to be awesome sci-fi!

  5. ‎Ray Kurzweil’s said 2045,but it will happen.Hopefully I’m still alive to see what it is as nobody actually knows. This teaser looks promising but Dawn of the Apes trailer is the best I’ve seen in a while.

“I need to speak to Ceaser”.

    • Mock my words. If the 2045 initiative succeeds. It’s going to be proof that the line genuise and stupidity is a EXTREMELY thin line. The 2045 initiative is a really bad idea.

  6. reminds me of the MATRIX … ME like

  7. Oooo…gave me goosebumps!

  8. Depp looks creeeepy.

  9. This Movie just caught my Attention.:)

  10. System Shock 2 anyone??? :)
I’d love to see a movie of the 1990′s horror video game!!!

  11. Yanno…(even though I’m still gonna go see it, because those teasers were friggin awesome)…these are the sort of movies that make me fear for humanity.

    • Ah…..But what if towards the end of life you could somehow load in your conscience? Or at least a computerized simulation of it. So you could basically go on and on….Oh wait…. I think that’s already happened with Dick Cheney. You just know super wealthy self centered dirt bag like that would be the people who’d be sure that the planet got to enjoy their presence for a long long time

  12. Trailer two must’ve cut out the part where he says “You are watching Through The Wormhole with me, Morgan Freeman”.

  13. I reeeealllllly hope this is how they view Ultron in A:AoS. It would be so great if the feared him so that they become weaker with will power. It would be quite the story to have a villain you’re scared of enough not to go to sleep. Like have Iron Man start the Demon in the Bottle, he takes Extremis, it links him to the IM suit mentally. Every time he links to the suit he gets visions, visions of an AI being. I want to see an ultra creepy Ultron, that even Hulk (in Hulk form) is scared of. I want to see an Ultron that intimidates Thor. I WANT to see a villain I’m scared of for once.

    BTW Morgan Freeman #ThroughTheWormHole :)
