Once again, while US distributors race around beating each other up and pee their pants to bring audiences the latest lame movie idea, independent studios overseas are putting together some really interesting movies. Though it seems no studio or distributor is willing to take a chance with many of them in the US. It’s a shame really, because there are some really cool movies coming out that I personally would like to see: Black Death, Solomon Kane, and now, The Tournament.

Today we have for you the trailer and several new images for the Scott Mann-directed action movie. Check them out after the jump.

Directed by Scott Mann of Mann Made Films, co-written by Jonathan Frank and Nick Rowntree, The Tournament looks to be a fun, action-packed thriller about a group of thirty top-notch assassins that converge on a different unsuspecting town every seven years to hold a “last man standing” style contest. In this case, all the losers die and the winner receives ten million dollars. While they battle, a group of men with more money to waste the than the US government, hold bets on anything that happens ala Rat Race.

The film stars Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible movies), Ian Somerhalder (Lost), Robert Carlyle (Stargate Universe, 28 Weeks Later), Kelly Hu and Scott Adkins. Watch end enjoy:

This trailer for The Tournament looks sharp and interesting, and it doesn’t give away more than is necessary to get the overall point across. I see some new and original shoot out ideas mixed in here, and I like them. My favorite one is when the guy being pushed by the car but you’ll see.

I like the premise behind The Tournament, and I’m always a fan of Kelly Hu regardless of the film she is in. I hope a US distributor will pick this up and bring it to a larger audience. I mean, we got to watch Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever so why not The Tournament? We also have some nice movie stills for you to look at. Check them out below [Click to Enlarge].

What do you think about The Tournament? Does it look like a movie you would like to see in American theaters or are you happy just to rent it on DVD/Blu-Ray?

The Tournament screened at Cannes back in May and will open in the UK later this year.

  1. Kelly Hu being in this film automatically makes it interesting. The trailer looks good as well.

  2. Kelly Hu is HHHHHHHOOOTTTTTTTTTT!! Looks like standard action fare though with a promising concept behind it.

  3. KELLY HU! Nuff said.

Haven’t seen her since X-Men. Good to see her again.

  4. i like the idea that besides the whole-assassin-thing, there’s a priest stuck n the middle.

  5. I think this is a remake of another movie that was just like this that came out not too long ago… It was the same amount of people except that the trailer seemed to focus on the reason why the assasins were there… I might be wrong but i doubt it. The movie that i’m talking about seemed like it had a much smaller budget i just dont remember the name of the movie.

  6. Looks effing awesome! Kind of like Battle Royale (with people who cna handle themselves) meets Gamer, with a bit of Rat Race thrown in (heh) and Smokin’ Aces thrown in for good measure. As you say, Paul, hope this one gets a distributor, it seems like a movie that’d do pretty well at the box office.

  7. i like this idea. too bad they didnt make this with every assassin from every other movie we’ve seen. john cusack from gpb killing nic cages(bkd) ass woulda been funny. lawl. o yes, brosnan in matador, i actually liked that movie

  8. Holy crap that looks like a fun movie.

And for those who don’t know Scot Adkins, he’s in this movie playing Yuri. The man is one of the most talented stuntment/martial artists working in Hollywood right now. So glad he’s getting work. Watching his fight scenes is something else man.

    Love it

  9. SO its basically an alternate version of The COndemed mixed in Wwith Surviving the game/Hard Target, mixed in with other movie of the sorts. yawn.

  10. Definitely a must see for me. Any time Kelly Hu is on screen, I’m there. =)

  11. @Sin – I don’t think oyu are watching this properly. It’s nothing like Hard Target (seriously JCV with a mullet reference?), or the Condemed or Surviving the Game. All those movies had regular people being forced to try and survive. THis is a contest where the assassins participate willingly.

  12. This sounds like a remake of sorts of the movie “Mean Guns” with Christopher Lambert and Ice T. That movie was great and I can’t help myself but to finish watching it if I find it on tv when I’m flipping channels. I’m game for this movie.

  13. Nothing for nothing, but while this looks good to me it does seem more like “The Quick and The Dead” only updated from a western to a modern day shoot-em-up.
Heck, they even got a priest in the mix. (Russel Crowe anyone)?
Still, originality is overrated. If they can tell a good story (or re-tell a good story in a different way) and keep us entertained while the auditorium lights are down I’m all for it.

  14. I think it looks pretty interesting, esp. the part of the guy being pushed by a truck on his back? (did I see that right?) Anyways seems like the priest should be downing great amounts of Ex Lax and his problem will be solved.

  15. They had me at Kelly Hu. :-)

  16. That looks pretty awesome, I hope it gets picked up by someone and gets a decent release in the US I bet it could make some studio a decent profit.

  17. Kelly Hu, I always support her.
    Sh’s very nice

  18. @ Paul Young

Maybe so but its the same feel to me, and since they threw a priest in there with no clue it kind of cheapens it by having someone not be in the know, being helped/forced to eventually kill.

Don’t hate on Van Damme’s mullet or it will find you and do a slow mo side kick on you. :P

  19. i hate remakes , it looks cheesy kind a low budget film . it is true they have problem on DVD release until now ?

  20. Is this film gonna release in South African theaters?
I’m really amped to see this film!

  21. @Sipho – I heard it directly from Scott Mann that The Tournament is being released in South Africa in early October. :) Hope that gives you something to look forward to.

  22. @Paul Young – Thanks..
I’ll be definitely watching for it!
