Screen Rant has been tracking the Scott Mann-directed action thriller The Tournament for a few months. The independent film by the UK director has been shopping for a distributor for awhile now and even opened L.A. Scream Fest recently in hopes of getting picked up for US distribution. It would appear the struggling Weinstein Company has done just that but unfortunately it will be for DVD release only and it comes out this Tuesday, October 20th.
The Tournament stars Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), Kelly Hu (X-Men 2), Ian Somerhalder (Lost), and Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum) as a group of elite assassins that converge on an unsuspecting town to compete in a deadly game of King of the Mountain where the last man standing wins $10 million dollars and the title of the world’s greatest assassin. Robert Carlyle (Stargate Universe) is a priest that gets unwittingly dragged into the game and must find a way to survive a situation that he is very much not prepared for.

It’s too bad that US distributors think audiences are only interested in watching crap like Dragonball: Evolution and Final Destination in the theaters while enjoyable action flicks like The Tournament, Black Death and Solomon Kane struggle to just get a DVD release. It’s all about remakes/sequels and established brand name recognition.

looks good i totally agree with u y is it that only crapfest movies get made here no one is willing to take a chance anymore.
i just finished watching this movie and i have to say its a good one. Ving Rhames and Robert Carlyle’s acting are great. Ian Somerhalder’s character is sick but funny and the best scene in the movie involves him and a bunch of assassins in a strip club;blood bath. Unlike most of the movies in this genre, the ending is satisfying and somewhat unexpected. When you see it you understand the somewhat part.
@Kevin2 – Sorry buddy, as much as we appreciate your comment, and I’m glad you like it, we don’t like to condone the “sharing” of movies online unless it’s a link to where it is a Pay-per-view or a legally viewable movie site like Veoh or Hulu.
Movies like this have a hard time making money because they go straight to dvd and by watching them without paying we don’t help the film makers recoup their costs and continue making films we enjoy. I edit the link out of your comment.

for assasins they sure do fight like UFC fighters hehehe, doesnt look all that good (judging by these videos) i might have to lend it from someone that is if it ever comes out in australia hehehe
i give this a 3/5 overused concept (condemned, underground etc)
music near the end is awkward to the moment but the action and special effects are freakin awesome
wow, great fight scene there with kelly! i’m kind of surprised this didn’t make it to theaters, but i’ll definitely be picking it up on dvd. is there a bluray release for it as well?
It’s a great action movie. Lots of action and violence. Cool story for those of us that are not jaded and grew up on Van Damme/Stallone/Arnold movies. Kelly Hu, however, could benefit from a few more acting classes…she just does not keep up with the rest of the cast.
I am freaking glad they put Sebatstican Foucan (sp?) and Scot Adkins in the movie. Some of the most talented and athletic stuntmen working today…and pretty decent actors as well.
Ever since Ravenous and Trainspotting, I will never question Carlyle on acting ever again…the man is just a joy to watch.
I just saw it recently and thought it was pretty good, thought it was about as good as Law Abiding Citizen which I also recenly saw.
