FOX Picks Up ‘Touch’ For Season 2

Kiefer Sutherland and David Mazouz Touch FOX FOX Picks Up Touch For Season 2

Amidst a rush of news regarding the fate of several bubble shows, FOX has announced that its sentimental, pseudo-science fiction drama, Touch, has been renewed for a second season.

The series concerns single-father Martin Bohm (Kiefer Sutherland) as he tries to unravel the mystery behind his son Jake’s (David Mazouz) seemingly preternatural abilities, which involve the Fibonacci sequence, predicting events and love of orange soda. Along for the ride are co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Jake’s social worker and Danny Glover as a specialist who understands Jake’s abilities and helps guide Martin to a deeper connection with his speechless child.

Despite seeing a small decline in ratings, FOX has decided that the Kiefer Sutherland drama was one of the network’s freshman programs worth saving – something that cannot be said for fellow newbies The Finder and the much-hyped Alcatraz from J.J. Abrams.

The news of the Touch renewal comes despite the lack of official comment from someone at the network. Whether this means that the renewal will have a caveat in place similar to the news surrounding NBC’s returning sitcoms 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation and Up All Night. More likely, however, the network is simply waiting to make an official announcement at the upfronts in a few days time.

Touch’s pilot episode premiered in January to somewhat mixed reviews, but managed to score 12 million viewers. When the series got officially underway in March, it was after the network moved the show from its intended Monday night time to take advantage of the post-American Idol spot on Thursday night - displacing the long-running, but similarly renewed Bones in the process. There Touch initially managed to hold on to most of its audience, but saw a notable period of decline for several weeks. Despite an uptick in ratings last week, the show overall has performed worse than two other high-profile shows, which received the axe.

Both the expensive Terra Nova and the recently cancelled Alcatraz performed better overall in the adults 18-49 demographic than Touch, yet failed to offer enough appeal to the network’s powers that be in order to remain on the schedule. Certainly, there are other factors at play here, and Sutherland’s long and lucrative tenure with FOX during 24′s eight seasons have undoubtedly earned him enough clout with the network to warrant such a decision.

At present, there has been no word on how many episodes will comprise season 2, but that news will likely come alongside the official renewal announcement at next week’s network upfronts.

Certainly, this is good news for fans of Kiefer Sutherland and those who have enjoyed both the conveniently interwoven stories that comprise each episode, as well as the deepening mystery concerning Jake’s gifts that has been building over the series’ first season.
