The 10 Scariest Giant Movie Monsters Of All Time

by Mike Eisenberg
(11 of 10)

Movie monsters come in all shapes and sizes, and while some of the smallest creatures have produced the greatest fear in humanity, there's no questioning that the giant monsters that attack whole cities and engulf victims like Tic-Tacs are terrifying on a whole other scale (get it?). Movies have seen their fair share of the big fellas, and we've narrowed them down to those we think are the scariest of them all.

Certain giant movie monsters just missed the cut, but came to mind while developing our 10 favorites. For instance, the Brain Bug from Starship Troopers is a massive and disgusting creature and the Graboids of Tremors are hideous creatures, but ultimately both missed our list.

Don't forget monsters that don't quite fit the protocol, like the aliens from War of the Worlds or Independence Day. While their ships were massive and had the ability to destroy entire cities, the monsters themselves were "regular-size" aliens.

One name that may instantly creep into your head throughout this process is King Kong. But we've decided he's just not that scary. Sure, a run-in on the streets of Manhattan might stop your heart, but after Peter Jackson's extensive humanization of the great ape, he's just not all that scary any more.

Without further ado, let's get right into the scariest giant movie monsters of all time. SOME SPOILERS ahead as many of the films hide the identity until the last act.

Another great addition would be the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth.

At first, you’d think that a creature with its eyes on its hands would be useless and laughable…and then you see it on the screen!

Really? The Staypuff Marshmallow Man? Really? This is a no brainer. Jaws is easily in the top five scariest giant monsters of all time. There are still people to this day that are afraid to go back into the water. While not as big as Cloverfield or Godzilla this shark took out several large watercrafts and even a helicopter in Jaws 2. Thats giant enough in my book.

GIANT. Sharks aren’t GIANT. He even referred to TREX as not really being GIANT. SO Jaws definitely wasn’t going to make this list.

In the movie, the shark was twenty-five feet long, a good four feet longer than any Great White ever caught. So, it was a giant monster.

    Shyte review list is Shyte.
    What is this.

if you go with best movie monsters I’ll give you Stay Puff because that was just awesome. Scary no, just awesome.
Cloverfield monster is one of the poorest designed major movie monsters ever.
I enjoyed the movie the first time around but the look of the monster was stolen amalgam. and just silly.

I agree. This list is garbage. Scary? Does the author even know what scary means?

i know they are not “giant” but the xenomorphs from aliens movies r the scariest monsters of all time. I can at least try to kill these monsters without their blood melting my skin off.

How come you say at the beginning of the article, that king kong was left out because he has be too HUMANISED, but then the first of your truly scary MONSTER is the 50ft woman. You do know that the woman is a HUMAN don’t you?? And the monster with tentacles in the mist seems far scarier than the mantis. Decent article worth a read but have seen movies with far better monsters than the ones mentioned in this.

No women are monsters, really. It’s also mathematically possible to prove they are evil.

To get a woman in this day and age you need time and money,
but today time is money so time = money
And money being the root of all evil, if we square root time, money and women we get evil.

Therefor all women are monsters and inherently evil.

Personally, the acid spitter or the bathroom creature from Silent Hill have haunted my thoughts for a long time.
