‘Top Gun’ Sequel Snags ‘X-Men: First Class’ Writers

Continuity issues aside, most people enjoyed the storyline of X-Men: First Class, which bodes well for the upcoming Top Gun sequel. To say that movie fans are skeptical about this revisit to the classic 1986 Tom Cruise flick about Air Force hot shots would be an understatement – despite the fact that director Tony Scott has said he will return for the sequel.

The news of First Class co-writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz being “in negotiations” for Top Gun 2 would indicate that Scott didn’t get proclaimed wish for Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Wolverine 2) to handle the Top Gun 2 script. That shouldn’t be taken as a bad thing, however, as Miller and Stentz managed to do a successful job weaving together many convoluted strands of X-Men lore – as well as American history – into what was arguably the best superhero movie of summer 2011 (depending who you ask, of course).

Scott has already shared his own ideas for the script with the public:  the story would explore the modern day Air Force and the use of unmanned combat drones controlled by tech-geek pilots. There’s plenty of room in that premise for Miller and Stentz to explore themes like humanity vs. technology, the face of modern warfare, mediations on changing times, etc. The pair managed to carve a new and refreshing look at well-covered terrain with First Class - maybe they’ll do it again with Top Gun?

Anything is possible at this early point in the game – including a possible appearance by Tom Cruise as Maverick in the film. We’ll let you know more when we know more. Stay tuned.
