‘Top Gun 2′ Recruits ‘The Town’ Screenwriter

There have been rumblings about Tom Cruise reprising his iconic role as Maverick under Tony Scott’s direction on Top Gun 2 for years now, but that pair’s collective frenzied work schedule has prevented that belated sequel from progressing beyond the earliest stages of development (a place even the infamously long-in-coming Ghostbusters 3 has managed to move past by now).

Paramount is now starting to get more serious about resurrecting the Top Gun brand for a second installment. The studio is planning a 3D theatrical re-release for the original 1984 blockbuster later this year; partially with the intent of cashing in on people’s nostalgia, but also as a means to drum up interest in a sequel.

Risky Business says that Paramount has tapped The Town co-screenwriter Peter Craig to script Top Gun 2. Besides receiving acclaim for his work on Ben Affleck’s 2010 crime-drama, Craig also rewrote the screenplay for Horse Soldiers (which Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer is working on) and penned an early script draft for the still-in-development Bad Boys 3.

X-Men: First Class and Thor co-writing duo Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz were reported as being “in negotiations” to script the second Top Gun movie back in Fall 2011, but it seems that deal was never finalized. By all accounts, Craig will be starting from scratch on the Top Gun 2 screenplay and drawing inspiration from Scott’s own ideas for the film.

Scott previously indicated that he’s not interested in doing “a reinvention” of the original Top Gun; rather, he wants to explore the end of the era of fighter pilots in the Top Gun sequel, partly due to his own encounters with contemporary Air Force personnel.

To quote the filmmaker directly:

“… These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones.  They are unmanned aircraft.  They operate them and then they party all night.”

A new generation of hot shots will replace Maverick in 'Top Gun 2'

While Scott still has numerous projects vying to become “his next movie” right now (including, most recently, Lucky Strike) the fact that he’s already started doing homework for Top Gun 2 – combined with Paramount’s recent activity – suggests the latter flick may become a reality sooner, rather than later.

It also sounds like the Top Gun sequel could touch on such timely issues as the technology vs. humanity debate, the pros and cons of how modern warfare is conducted, etc. Should Cruise sign on, we could also get a belated followup that pits Maverick’s “old-school” mentality against a new generation’s mindset (a la Rocky Balboa) rather than one which simply sees Cruise’s character “passing the torch,” so to speak.

That’s all to say: belated sequels are always a tricky prospect – and their poor track record is pretty impossible to overlook – but Top Gun 2 actually sounds like it has potential. We’ll just have to wait and see…

  1. interesting concept. it done right, I’d be open to giving it a shot.

  2. Update ‘Only God Forgives’.

Top Gun is old news and this remake or whatever you want to call it will suck.

  3. Tom still looks the same as he did 25 years ago!! Dont know what his secret is, perhaps its the scientology. This might work, perhaps Maveric is now the teacher and goose is a ghost?

    • Iceman (Val Kilmer) didnt fair as well as Tom Cruise. Val may need to lose some weight if he is casted for TG2.

As for TG 3D I am not sure I really want to see the infamous Fly Boy volley ball scene in 3D…yikes!

      • Wasn’t iceman and the other guy suppose to be gay? I thought it was a joke but people said they really were gay lmao. But anyway Top Gun was nothing more then a cool chick flick disguised as a movie about a hot shot pilot in the air force or navy whatever…..

        • Wasn’t iceman and the other guy suppose to be homosexuals? I thought it was a joke but people said it was true. But anyway Top Gun was nothing more then a cool chick flick disguised as a movie about a hot shot pilot in the air force or navy whatever…….I hope that was cleaned up better but i meant no harm the first time.

  4. Um, the problem is the original Top Gun was about Navy pilots, not Air force pilots. Even with today’s unmanned drones, there is still no replacing the first responders. Everyone know when something goes down in a far away place the Navy is the first in town. I hope they will stick to the Navy pilots because frankly a movie about drones where no friendly lives are at stake could be pretty boring… Not to mention, there’s no replacing the dog-fighting that seems to be becoming a lost art… Mainly because we’re never in a conflict with any army that has an air power worth a damn…

My wish is to see a bunch of hot shots flying F/A-18E Super Hornets. That would be awesome.

  5. I’m open to the idea of this belated sequel. As Johnny mentioned, if it’s done right, it might be interesting to see.

  6. This sequel… I don’t like it, it sounds dangerous.

  7. i loves the original top gun. seeing the scene where goose flips the guy off. would be awesome in 3D!, on TG2 not something i ever saw coming because there really wasnt a story to follow. im intreseted to see what direction it takes. and what role Maverick (Tom Cruise) will play in it.

  8. Ah come on….Wouldn’t you actually rather see the parody revised using bioth Cruise and Sheen? Seeing them together in a revised parody of Hot Shots would be much more fun…..Hot Guns is one of those period sieces that should be left alone….If they want to make something on the same order with today’s military that’s fine….But make it original….Not Top Gun

    • I got them mixed up…I meant Top Guns is a period piece

  9. BAD BAD BAD idea! don’t do that !
it’s gonna be another wall street 2. Those are 80′s movie. They defined the era and simply can’t work outside out of it: no limits, interaction between very macho man and very feminine woman, “america is back” ,etc…. It simply doesn’t make sense now : we’re in a era of crisis and environmental sustainability, metrosexual men and agressive women, search of a new world order, etc…
the only thing that this movie can do is make 80′s look good and make us bitter about our times.

  10. I would like to see F/18E superhornet in action. It would be awesome movies if they do that.

  11. Concept sucks why even call it Top Gun if it has nothing to do with the Navy Fighter Weapons School. By the way the original cut of Top Gun was to much like a documentary so they had to recut the movie. Yes that should be the natural progression Super Hornets E/F doesn’t matter as long as it is not a drone.

  12. Depends if you want a one seat or two seat Super Hornet or not!

  13. I think they should stick with the navy Pilots and have Tom Cruise as like Viper a Lt Cmdr or something by now at the Top Gun school and then be activate to lead a group in fight in some attack in Iran or something. Got to stick with the story line and not switch to Air Force. that is a whole other Movie.
