As troubling as the idea is of putting a price on murder, the fictional (and real-life) men and women who made careers based on doing just that have fascinated the public for years, and this week's hitman drama Killing Them Softly proves the attraction is alive and well.
We thought we'd take this opportunity to look back at the hitmen who captured our attention (and box office dollars) over the years. As time goes by, more mob movies, gangster films, and even dark comedies continue to cast a hitman as the embodiment of cool, fear, or class.
But a select few made a more lasting impression; see if you agree with our list of the Top 10 Coolest Movie Hitmen.
In my mind, Bourne is both too far into ‘highly-trained assassin’ for him to count, and his employer is technically the US government. Come to think of it, that also makes it difficult to really categorize him as anything…spy-ish?
Guess I’m getting old…. Willis was more entertaining as Jimmy the Tulip in The Whole Nine Yards… and as a tip of the hat the hat to the past… no Max Von Sydow from Three Days of the Condor?
Great list but would have been better using a 20-30 limit. Not seeing Jef Costello on it is a bit disappointing considering it lists both Jeffrey Chow AND Forest Whitaker who are both influenced and taken from Jef Costello.
If I really, really had to have someone killed, like yesterday, I’d call Leon…and never doubt it would be done. ‘So it shall be written…so it shall be done.’
There was a release a few years back called “Rain Fall” that followed an American/Japanese hitman named John Rain. From what I heard of it, the film wasn’t that good, but if you’ve ever read the books upon which the film is based on, the name of John Rain would be an automatic inclusion on this list. Cannot wait for the day that someone takes a stab at making a decent film out of this series, because Rain is that good.
this would have been choice 3 for me and do not let us forget charles bronson in “stone…..killer” (the proper way to say it btw..not “stone killer” by those who were too young to know the 1970′s phrase)stone meant for real or the real deal. example > he is a stone…nut case. (a little education for the peanut gallery *smile
Vying for number 3 in my mind would be the lttle girl in Leon: The Professional..whom Leon was mentoring.
Kudos to the list maker however ..good list.
Many thanks! Honestly, I don’t know what it is about hitmen, but a conversation among even a few people over their favorites soon spins off into a full-blown debate with dozens of names suddenly being remembered.
Al Neri (Richard Bright) in the Godfather films. You know he’s one steely and icey cold killer when he dutifully kills off a hooker by slitting her up the middle and blows away the boss’s brother.
And although we never got to see him at work in the films, but Luca Brazi was reputed to be the most feared man in the mafia. Even Don Corleone himself was scared s***less of him.
Certainly on the longer list, but while we would love to run into him on a tropical resort, we might hesitate in giving him a job these days. And be nervous anytime we left him with our wives…
Jules & Vincent all the way!
Anton Chigurh!!!!!
Joe from Looper
That was a tough one! Definitely has the ‘cool’ factor, but as a triggerman and body-dumper, the job requirements are usually pretty minimal.
I mean, he’s great at them. But still.
Charles Bronson in the Mechanic, how did this not make the list?
Macadoolie,
I completely agree. Charles Bronson was the man. Even thopught of him when i actually visited Naples Italy 2 years ago.
I’m found of the lead character in the original “Bangkok Dangerous.” Having a mute hitman was chancy but inspired.
Errr…. where the hell is Martin Blank from Grosse Point Blank? Probably the coolest hitman ever accompanied by an 80′s soundtrack
Martin Blank was a great hitman, but for cool, I think he had too many personal problems to be considered cool. But I was kinda looking for him too.
Definitely made the longer list, but ultimately left off for basically the reason you mentioned.
Agree with every entry in this but guys, come on, how could you forget Boba Fett?
Bounty Hunter, not a hitman, there’s a difference
Gooch has it right, although, a case could be made that Boba Fett belongs on every list of ‘Coolest’ anythings.
YES. LEON!!! great movie.
does jason bourne count?
In my mind, Bourne is both too far into ‘highly-trained assassin’ for him to count, and his employer is technically the US government. Come to think of it, that also makes it difficult to really categorize him as anything…spy-ish?
Leon ranked way too low.
No official rank! If they were, Leon would be way, way up there. We front-loaded him so people would know we had our heads on straight
Guess I’m getting old…. Willis was more entertaining as Jimmy the Tulip in The Whole Nine Yards… and as a tip of the hat the hat to the past… no Max Von Sydow from Three Days of the Condor?
Jimmy the Tulip certainly is on the longer list, and you win the comments for bringing up Joubert.
“There is no cause, only yourself. The belief is in your own precision.”
Awsome list! I would never want to meet one of does peoples
No John Cusack from Grosse Point Blank!?
Here’s another vote for John Cusack in Grosse Pointe Blank. Also Edward Fox in The Day Of The Jackal, and John Hurt and Tim Roth in The Hit.
Awesome list! only one i would add that isn’t on there … pierce brosnan as julian noble in the matador. just because brosnan is great in it haha
+1
ohhh yea and jimmy the tulip from the whole nine yards definitely
jimmy the tulip!!
You mean Yimmy?
No mr pink?

Jack Wilson (Jack Palance) from Shane
The same number one hit man who came to mind when I clicked on the list “Forest Rocks”!
“OM G” my second choice also! I’m 2 for 2…yikes
this would have been choice 3 for me and do not let us forget charles bronson in “stone…..killer” (the proper way to say it btw..not “stone killer” by those who were too young to know the 1970′s phrase)stone meant for real or the real deal. example > he is a stone…nut case. Mr & Mrs Smith (together or independently)
Hitman (Agent 47)
What bout Hitman? Agent 47.
We were going to give Luca Brasi an honorable mention, but were too terrified to even type his name….
What?? No Julian Noble??? (Portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, in ´The Matador´, which netted him a GG nomination for best actor in a comedy)
Certainly on the longer list, but while we would love to run into him on a tropical resort, we might hesitate in giving him a job these days. And be nervous anytime we left him with our wives…
i love this list
