Tony Gilroy Talks ‘Bourne Legacy’; Renner & Damon May Team Up for ‘Bourne 5′

3 years ago by

Universal recently shifted the release date for The Bourne Legacy back an entire week, in order to make room for the box office reign of Dark Knight Rises. The studio is taking no risks with its Bourne franchise quasi-sequel/spinoff. In fact, ever since writer/director Tony Gilroy conceived the project, the door’s been left open for Matt Damon to return as Jason Bourne in a fifth installment (we’ll just call it Bourne 5 for now).

The full Bourne Legacy trailer was structured to drive home the idea that J. Bourne was just the tip of the iceberg with respect to Treadstone and other black-ops programs. Truth be told, that idea was emphasized ad nauseam in the trailer – but that gesture was arguably necessary, given how many people have been under the mistaken impression that Bourne Legacy is a reboot (starring Jeremy Renner as Jason Bourne).

Gilroy spoke with Empire about Bourne Legacy, and likened the film’s connection to the Bourne trilogy as follows:

“If you think of the first three Bourne films as [the portions of 'Hamlet' that feature Rosencrantz and Guildenstern], then we’re showing you Elsinore [with 'Bourne Legacy']. You thought you were seeing something you weren’t. What if there’s a much larger story? What if Treadstone wasn’t the only black-ops programme?”

As mentioned before, the official Bourne Legacy trailer (and the footage screened at CinemaCon 2012) both back what Gilroy said. The film’s promos to date have also revealed that Bourne Legacy overlaps directly with events in the Bourne trilogy. Moreover, it appears that plot points from Bourne Ultimatum reappear in Legacy, in order to set the storyline of the latter in motion.

Producer Frank Marshall also reiterated Gilroy’s comment about how Bourne Legacy (literally) expands the Bourne movie universe:

“You see there are several different programmes in the movie with different skill sets. All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.”

Damon previously spoke out about Bourne Legacy, saying he felt the series needed a shot of fresh life – after the trilogy had taken Bourne’s identity/amnesia storyline as far as possible (without becoming ridiculous). However, Damon has never dismissed the idea of the Bourne character returning in the fifth installment (in public, that is).

Matt Damon as Jason Bourne

A Damon/Renner union in Bourne 5 will only happen if moviegoers are receptive to Bourne Legacy, as will ultimately be reflected by the box office returns. The overall early consensus, however, seems optimistic-to-positive (based on feedback to Legacy trailers). It helps that Gilroy is an accomplished filmmaker, thanks to his script contributions on the first three Bourne movies, and the Oscar-nominated Michael Clayton (which he wrote and directed).

Personally, this writer is still concerned that Gilroy might’ve gotten too caught up in revising the backstory for Bourne Legacy – enough so the film could suffer from excessive “retconning.” Nonetheless, early footage does seem promising, and Gilroy has impressed with his plans to changeup the action in Legacy, so as to reflect the non-fractured mindset of Renner’s character. Hence, there’s good reason to be hopeful.

To top all that off – check out some exclusive Bourne Legacy images (from the next issue of Empire Magazine):

  1. Renner/Damon team-up? Im aboard.

    Hope Renner’s solo outingdoes well.

  2. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a Jason Bourne cameo in The Bourne Legacy.
Everybody loves a great after credits scene lately and I think it’s a perfect place for a Damon cameo to happen so it won’t loom over the rest of the film…

  3. I think that Bourne Legacy will be awesome. Jeremy Renner is awesome. It looks like another hit for Jeremy Renner. The action looks great.

and bring on Bourne 5 for the jeremy renner and matt damon team up.

  4. I’m still not totally sold on this. I mean the trilogy was called “Bourne ________” because his name was Jason Bourne. Unless Renner is playing his brother or something, why not just call it Treadstone since that was the name of the operation and he’s just another agent? The action looks pretty good and I’ve liked Renner in the movies I’ve seen him in, but it still feels odd to see a Bourne movie without Damon.

    • It says ‘Legacy’ which could mean, what Bourne did, has inspired the others to do the same. Maybe this is the story of the agent who went rogue because his belief of Jason Bourne.

  5. f*** that little b**** streisand damon, renner is a badass

  6. For me I would love the team up. The Bourne Identity made Damon watchable for me and it would be good to see him bring the character back.

  8. That would be so sick renner/ damon hell yea

  9. I said it months ago, but my ideal scenario is this. Movie turns out to be great, we get to the end and Renner is given his next assignment. Jason Bourne. Cue titles.

  10. Renner is DULL. I couldn’t STAND his “Hawkeye” at all, in fact he was the lamest part of Avengers, So I WON’T be seeing this movie, either in theaters or on dvd.

    • Chris

That would be Marvel’s fault for taking Hawkeye’s sarcastic/cynical/witty demeanor and giving it to Robert Downey Jr. Minus those traits, it quickly makes Hawkeye a boring character.

  11. I’d like this, but let’s see how Legacy does first. Hopefully it’s a solid action flick. I really enjoyed the main trilogy and it has a lot to live up to.

Personally, I would have let it die after Ultimatum, but if we get a good spinoff, I won’t complain.

  12. I am excited about this movie. I love the Bourne trilogy and think Renner could be that X Factor that gives the series a new prospective/new material. A Damon/Renner Bourne movie would epic and would more than likely be that last one in the series that ends everything within the Treadstone operation

  13. I have to admit, I don’t see the whole appeal of Jeremy Renner as a guy to lead multiple franchises, or at the very least, involved in them. He seems like he needs the right role to really shine. Plus, he’s going to be tied up in the Marvel stuff, the Mission Impossible movies, and possible future Bourne movies. I think it’s likely he could typecast rather quickly. He hasn’t done much outside of the big budget franchise type movies.
With regard to the story of the Bourne movies, it sure seems to me that they are trying to say that the US government is pretty dumb. They spend a huge amount of money to train and develop these super assassins to do who knows what, only to have a couple of them go rogue, and kill all the other super assassins who are sent to kill the rogues. Then the government spends a ton more money chasing down these rogue operations, and in the end wastes a ton more money because they never got anything out of these operations except for either dead or pissed off assassins who have no life. Geez, no wonder they go rogue. Who’d want a life like that anyway?

  14. It would be nearly be as good as American ninja 4

  15. It would be nearly be as good as the team up in American ninja 4.

  16. LOL @ the guy calling Damon a streisand and Renner a badass.

You do know Renner was a make up artist before he was an actor. If that doesn’t scream streisand I don’t know what does.

Anyway, I like Renner but it just seems weird seeing him in a Bourne movie.

But whatever, I’ll give it a watch one way or another.

  17. I think Damon and Renner should both do this film and end this series in an epic conclusion
