Tom Welling Marvel Studios Marvel Eying DC Superman Tom Welling for New Superhero Role?

Tom Welling’s Clark Kent is only three short days from embracing his destiny as Superman in the Smallville series finale – scheduled to air as a two hour event this Friday. With ten seasons of DC superhero mythos under his belt, what’s next for the Abercrombie & Fitch model turned high-profile actor/director/producer?

Answer: If a new report is to be believed – more superhero action; but this time at rival comic book house Marvel Studios.

According to What’s Playing, Marvel Studios is eyeing Welling for a potential role in one of their upcoming comic book to film adaptation properties – now that the actor is free from saving Metropolis and has started looking at future projects. There’s no doubt that the news will both excite and confuse Smallville and superhero lovers alike – especially if you’re a die-hard fan of one or the other comic book universe.

However, it’s especially interesting to hear that Marvel is interested in Welling who, aside from his time as Clark Kent, isn’t exactly experienced in headlining feature-films – with only three movie appearances to his name: Rupert Wainwright’s 2005 remake of John Carpenter’s The Fog as well as two rounds as Charlie Baker in the Steve Martin franchise, Cheaper by the Dozen. Granted Welling has a sizable following from his work at the CW but Marvel has proven they’re capable of landing high-profile, house-hold name-type, movie stars for their superhero roles.

Tom Welling Cheaper By The Dozen Marvel Eying DC Superman Tom Welling for New Superhero Role?Unlike superhero feature films (which require real-world feel and epic action), Smallville thrives on its oftentimes campy interpretation of the DC superhero world (see last Friday’s episode “Prophecy” which once again featured the return of Chris Gautheir as the Toyman). As a result, it’s not immediately apparent how Welling’s sometimes hammy superhero act and “boyish” good looks would translate to the blockbuster filmscape – especially without a different type of role (maybe one that actually showcases his acting talent) to serve as a buffer between iconic superhero appearances. The discrepancy between what works in comic book films, as opposed to TV series, was likely a contributing factor in Bryan Singer’s choice to leave Welling in TV land – after the actor tested for Superman: Returns.

That said, it’s not that Welling couldn’t do it, since he’s definitely playing to the CW audience on Smallville; however, looking at the current slate of Marvel properties the studio has en route (in some form) – Deathlok, Ant ManIron FistDoctor Strange, Heroes for Hire, and Runawaysit’s hard to know exactly where Welling would fit in. In the current cinescape, studios market a film with either a high-profile actor or a well-known property, so it’s unlikely that Marvel would offer Welling a headlining role in a lesser-known superhero vehicle – since it’d be especially hard to market the project.

As a result, should Marvel actually coax Welling into a rival superhero role – it’d be easier to believe he’d be a member of a team (as in Runaways) – as opposed to a one man show (like Deathlok or Iron Fist). Though, who would have thought relative unknown (pre-Star Trek) Chris Hemsworth would make such a successful leading-man in a riskier superhero film like Thor?

  1. Tom Welling was the best Superman since Christopher Reeve and we deserve to c him on the big screen in a series of Superman movies. Tom Welling had a large fan base during the shows 10 yr period. He is a good actor and a perfect fit to play a young Superman. If he is not gonna play Superman, he should b in a good movie or show that us fans can enjoy him again.

    • I agree, Tom really should have been The Man of Steel instead of the guy they had. That movie really wasn’t Superman anyway, but I mean what more did they need to cast him as Superman? Christopher Reeve handed off the cape to him for the most part in Smallville. Why is it so hard for the world of movies to see that fans would like to see their hero’s depicted the way they were written and stop taking so much artistic license the character. Even though Smallville was as artistic license as it gets, they still brought about a new character into the DC universe with Chloe. Anyway that’s my two cents, just wish they would have finished up Smallville and brought about all the movies with the characters they already built a fan base off of, except their Lana Lang, as she was just bad.

    • I was actually unhappy when they came out with The Man of Steal instead of coming out with a movie with Tom Welling in it, after all of the seasons of Smallville he was in. I was/am still really dissappointed! And in the end we didn’t get to see him fly much at all… just at the end of the last episode!

      • I agree Steffanie. I totally loved Smallville and just finished watching the 10 seasons over the last 2 months. I wish they continued the show and maybe called it Motropolis or something. I felt that the final show was the beginning of a new era but to my disappointment it was actually the end. come on you guys pick up tom and his cast and lets continue this saga

  2. will there be arenver karate kid with ralph macchio as the Teacer bring back matin kove

    • tom welling must get out of the Superman persona and try his great acting skills in other film’s!That will show his true talents for big block buster movies!!

      • I completely agree!! I think Tom boxing himself into another superhero role would be a mistake on his part and so far it seems he is taking the smart road and taking completely different and interesting roles now that he is off his hiatus. At first I was a little mad he didn’t get the role in man of Steel but after thinking about it i realized he would be pigeon holing himself into a role for life and never be able to live it down, kind of like Rob pattinson and Edward Cullen who is actually not that bad of an actor once you get him in a decent film away from horrible co-stars. Anyway, so glad to see Tom in front of the camera again and even if he wasn’t in huge blockbusters I would settle for another TV show at this point BUT what I would really love to see is him playing the complete opposite of what he is used to in a few movies. I think he would make an amazing villain or bad guy, his work as Clark Luthor and Bizarro and also when he was on Red Kryptonite showed he can pull it off quite convincingly. I just wish I would quit going to these other sites and read the horrible stuff I do about his acting because it is not true. Given the amount of experience he actually had before and has now I think he is quite good and as the person above mentioned he really grew or at least his skills did over the years, although he wasn’t actually a teenager like they said. He may have looked like a sweet little boy but he was 25 when he started(you seem to be a fan and probably know this though):) I would love to see him have the opportunity to work alongside people like Johnny Depp and Leo DiCaprio because I think he could learn a lot from them and generally actors tend to do a better job when they are working with a better caliber of actors, not to say that the Smallville cast was bad or anything but well I hope you know what I mean. I think the ONLY actor I have seen that can’t act well regardless of who she is acting with is Kristen Stewart but then, c’mon there is just no hope for her and a plank of wood can act better than her :p have any suggestions of actors you might want to see him work with? he is already working alongside some amazing ones in both these upcoming flicks 😀

  3. I’m of 2 minds about this. Selfishly, I’d like to see the growth and continuity of our beloved, well-known, selfless, naive Clark Kent into the maturing Superman who becomes street-smart if you will, by ever larger and more dangerous threats and more cunning adversaries. However, that would tend to type-cast Tom into acting oblivion. Perhaps there is a middle ground where Tom could mix his work to include Superman movies as well as other diverse roles, all with A-List writing and A-List actors. Either way, Tom should bust out of TV and into movies 100% to become the most sensational actor and box-office draw possible. He could become established in a diversity of roles before returning to the Smallville Saga, while still young. That way, he’d get the experience and chops while his fans get their TW fix in the best of all possible ways.

  4. making gaurdians of the galaxy could pull of Nova

  5. Tom welling deserves to be SUPER MAN HE INSIRES TO WANT TO ACTULE

  6. While Tom does portray Clark Kent fantastically, I don’t believe he’s right to carry on the legacy of superman. I’m not bashing on Toms acting skills, he’s an amazing actor able to portray whatever the role needs. With the Brandon Routh portrayal of superman, how can you not want to turn that down? Fail at that you’re done doing a cameo for zack and Miri make a porno. Which I imagine Brandon Routh had no problem doing 😉 However, 10 years of doing the same role is along time. I agree 100% to what Nan said. He doesn’t need to lock himself in as a cast type. I expect we will see him continue thrive as action/drama actor instead of a tv sitcom. Just give home time to adjust to the family life.

  7. i think tom welling is great–he has what a lot of people like to see a great body and looks

  8. By far the best Superman since Christopher Reeves. After watching the entire 10 seasons, I am about to start again. Great actor, very disappointed he did take the lead in Man Of Steel( Just watched and sadly a failure for me:(

Hope he is cast for more Super Hero Roles Soon

  9. Tom welling would he do a tv movie of superman because I would love to see it.

  10. Tom Welling’s true talent is playing the cold calculating villain. He showed his chops when he played Ultraman, Red K Clark, Bizzaro Clark.

  11. I’am an older woman, but I have watched Smallville for the beginning, and I still watch the reruns. You are right with his boyish good-looks, and his warm personal, even though the super hero comes to mind I truly can’t wait to see him do something else, because I know he can. I’m excited about his new roles and I will be at the box office, but I’ve is playing with some pretty good hitters. I would love to see him do a Love Story with none other than Kristin, I love to see them together, there was a ever sweet connection. But it’s got to be something different and bold so that we don’t see Smallville. Waiting. Thank for putting Ton Welling to work, he will always be a sight for sore eyes.

  13. yes just started flying tom and chloe and lex and joun and make the tv show go on you did not bet lex.
