Tomb Raider Reboot To Be “Realistic Origin Story”

lara croft tomb raider Tomb Raider Reboot To Be Realistic Origin Story

It was announced earlier this year that a Tomb Raider reboot was in the works. The rumor of Megan Fox replacing Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft was denied straight away by her spokesperson, but according to producer Dan Lin (who produced Terminator Salvation) they are still going to go for a younger Lara, so Jolie is definitely not coming back to reprise the role for a third time.

In an interview at the premiere of Terminator Salvation, Lin talked about various different movies he’s involved with, one of which was the Tomb Raider reboot. When asked about what we can expect from the movie, he replied that it won’t be of the same feel as the previous incarnation:

“…It’s a great origin story that we’re going to tell… more character orientated, more realistic than the past Lara Croft movies… It is an origin story, so it is a younger Lara Croft… It’s not full-on action, like Terminator, it’s character-driven action… For me, the Lara Croft movies and games have gone a little too action orientated… I want it to have action but with character.”

For the full video interview with Lin you can head over to

I’m actually not totally against the idea of a Tomb Raider reboot, simply because they didn’t do all that they could have done with the existing ones, and adding a third chapter to the current continuity wouldn’t do much good at this point.

However, I’m not in favor of what Lin is describing they’re doing with this reboot. I can’t see how he can complain that the previous movies (and particularly the games), are too action-oriented: For one, the whole point of a video game is fun, entertaining action for you to control, and I think the movie version should keep to that spirit.

There are enough “realistic” and “dark” origin stories out there already without a newfound Tomb Raider series coming along and just doing the same thing again (it certainly didn’t work with Wolverine). There are certainly elements from the games, such as Lara’s history with her father, that can be drawn upon to be part of the new Tomb Raider movies. But it shouldn’t be the thing that the movie concentrates on – can they really bring anything new to the “realistic origin story” table?

As far as the possibility of Megan Fox being the new Lara Croft goes, although it was publicly denied by her spokesperson, it doesn’t necessarily mean she won’t ever be cast in the role. The denial was issued almost 6 months ago, but fast-forward to the present day and Miss Fox’s mind might have changed. I’m not sure about her acting ability (with the origin story angle, acting chops are a bit more important than they were for the previous movies), but what do you do when the story calls for a younger actress, and therefore excludes Angelina Jolie? Well, you get someone who rivals Jolie in the looks department, that’s what.

What is your opinion on the realistic origin story they are going to have in the Tomb Raider reboot? Should they just keep it action orientated, as the games are?

  1. Ok Fox is hot but we need some one who can act and be good looking. Summer Glau

    • Agree

  2. If you look for younger one…

    Vanessa Hudgen… :)

  3. i think the y should just use angalina she is the main lara croft she is way better than megan fox.

  4. I just can’t see her bein’ Lara Croft. Might be cool might not be.

  5. Oh man i dont like these models -.-

Lara is Lara but dont a cheap model!!!!!!!

  6. NO WAY. I Wouldn’t like to see Vanessa Hudgens as Lara Croft. None of the romanians would like to see her as Lara. She can remain at her “teenage love stories” but not Tomb Raider. GOD!!! Erase that thought Nelson!
I’d love to see Megan Fox as Lara Croft. She seems to have a mature flair. And I love it. Boo Vanessa! Go Megan!

  7. Na Megan Fox and Vanessa Hudgens will kill Lara. The person perfect as a younger Lara is Mila Kunis. She did great as Mona Sax in Max Payne, I’m sure she’ll do great in Tomb Raider Origins.

  8. We need someone new. There is no one who looks even remotely like Lara Croft other than Angelina Jolie. The ones who could vaguely puul it off -it’d be a stretch- can’t act on anywhere near the same level as her. Jolie was fantastic in the first movie; the second movie just sucked due to bad scripting.
    Fox -HELL NO
    Hudgens -HELL NO
Kunis -doesn’t look remotely like Lara- though she might’ve pulled it off if she did
    Just bring in someone new.

  9. the studios should go with an unknown actress, since they want an authentic,
deeper feel to the film, maybe a darker tone too! they should leave all those other fluffy actresses alone, unless it’s angelina jolie who is tomb raider to me.megan fox name came up only because of her “sex appeal” though lara croft is sexy, she’s not all about the “pam anderson, ass all out over the place appeal” angelina jolie is a beautiful woman.but she is more intriguing, and has some substance to her, than megan fox,who only seems to care about being the next “sex symbol” than brushing up on her acting skills.that’s why people plug her in as “tomb raider” because of her sex appeal, and if it’s all about that first oppose to a reboot that makes sense, and is more character oriented, than they might aswell give it to megan fox or any other “sex kitten” who only cares about rolling around in bed on screen, than exuding emotional acting skills on screen.jolie has some of the same qualities as lara croft, beyond her looks.her personality is what appealed to the studios,an of course, her uncanny resemblance to lara croft, that’s why she worked as tomb raider, where as megan fox,and that disney character girl(who is a joke,to even be mentioned as tomb raider, and that other chic, from max payne)wouldn’t even look or act convincing enough as lara croft if they showed up to work for a holloween contest for millions of dollars,in the best tomb raider costume,so i say give it to an unknown or up and coming actress who fits the role other than being some popular “it” girl, who can careless about being taken serious as an actress, jolie cares about the roles she takes.

  10. *cough* Gemma Arterton *cough*

kind of a perfect Lara. or if you want some extra added class, Romola Garai.
