Tom Hardy Playing Hugo Strange in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’?

Published 4 years ago by , Updated August 9th, 2013 at 1:25 am,

Last month we learned Bronson and Inception star Tom Hardy was starring in The Dark Knight Rises, the third film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. While most of us Bat fans were ecstatic to hear that Hardy had joined the cast, we were also left wondering (and speculating) about who the actor would play.

Now Batman News is reporting a rumor (taken from a source who has proven to be reliable) that Hardy is actually playing the villain known as Hugo Strange. While fanboys know all about Strange, the average moviegoer may be wondering just who this character is. Thankfully, you have us here at Screen Rant to explain it.

Hugo Strange has had a long and, well, strange history in the Batman comic books. He was one of Batman’s first recurring villains (as far back as 1940), preceding more famous bat-foes like Catwoman or The Joker. Strange has appeared, been killed off, and since reappeared many times in the subsequent decades of Batman comics; his backstory has also undergone several revisions. For the purposes of discussing Hardy’s possible role in The Dark Knight Rises, we’ll stick to the stories of Hugo Strange most likely to fit in Chris Nolan’s Batman movie universe.

The version of Strange you’re most likely to see onscreen is the one where the character is a prominent (or celebrity) psychologist with mob ties. In the famous Batman storyline “Prey”, Hugo Strange is tapped by the Gotham P.D. to work up a profile on the Batman, in order to help the police catch the vigilante. Strange is said to have been raised in “Hell’s Crucible,” a tough Gotham neighborhood not far from “Crime Alley,” that infamous site where Bruce Wayne’s parents were murdered. While brilliant, Strange is also violent and unstable – in one version of his origin he was suspended from his tenure at Gotham State University for conducting bizarre experiments that transformed people into mindless, destructive (and deformed) brutes.

Strange becomes increasingly obsessed with discovering who Batman is, and eventually with actually becoming Batman himself (which he eventually does, doing some terrible things in Batman’s name). The twisted villain eventually deduces through his psyche examinations that Bruce Wayne is likely Batman, and uses that knowledge to turn the police against the vigilante and lure Batman to his doom.

In another famous Batman storyline, “Terror”, Hugo Strange teams with The Scarecrow, using their mix of psychotropic drugs (basically fear and rage) to wreak havoc. In more recent storylines, Strange has been written as a doctor doing psyche evaluations at Wayne Enterprises (where he discovers the Batman/Wayne connection), and a villain possibly connected to the drug “Venom,” which fanboys know as the serum which powers the ruthless crime boss known as Bane.

From those small splinters of the Hugo Strange chronicles, I’m sure that hardcore and casual Batman fans alike can easily see why having this particular villain featured in The Dark Knight Rises would be good move for Nolan and Co. Hugo Strange is a time-tested Batman villain, and his various story archs have the added bonus of tying up a lot of the story that has been put forth by both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight – a goal we already know Nolan has firmly planted in mind.

We also know that Chris and Jonathan Nolan, along with screenwriter David Goyer, have already established a trend of borrowing elements of famous Batman stories for their movies. I personally expect that trend to continue with The Dark Knight Rises, and as you can read above, a lot of the most fitting story archs for this third Batman film fall squarely under the Hugo Strange banner.

Finally, Hardy seems like a perfect choice to play a character like Hugo Strange – a villain who has to be convincing as a brilliant but crazy doctor, and may even have to throw on a Batman costume and do some damage. If you’ve seen Hardy’s work in Bronson and Inception, you know that he has the necessary talent to convey equal parts charm and menace, and that he is also capable of handling some awesome action sequences. I would love to see him and Christian Bale throw down in their respective Batman outfits.

Bottom line: Using Hugo Strange as the villain would be a refreshing and original approach to a Batman film, and would offer loads of opportunity in terms of the direction this third Batman movie takes. It would even be great to see Bane as a possible secondary villain (created by Strange) or even have Cillian Murphy back one last time as the Scarecrow for a three-for-three run in Nolan’s Batman universe.

I for one am now totally rooting for Hardy to play Hugo Strange – how about you guys?

The Dark Knight Rises will be in theaters (IMAX and regular) on July 20, 2012.

  1. I don’t care who Tom Hardy plays….I’m just glad he will be cast in this film period!

    • Your confusing me Mark.

If this “story” is not a real story and just pure speculation, then how come Jett and yourself seem worried that this guy from BatmanNews received possibly legit info regarding Strange being in B3?

      • “Your confusing me Mark.

And it was false. He’s playing Bane.

  2. This is what I’m hoping for in regards to new characters and cast IF Black Mask is not going to be in this film:

The task force assigned to capture The Batman:

Commish Jim Gordon (aims to sabotage Strange and Lawton)
    Criminologist Dr Hugo Strange
    Sgt Floyd Lawton/Deadshot
Detective Sara Essen (ally of Gordon, no affair like him comics)

I would love to see Viggo Mortensen or Robin Williams as Hugo Strange, Tom Hardy as Sgt Lawton/Deadshot and Naomi Watts as Essen.

Catwoman would of course be the wild card and more of a Batman ally.

  3. I really want him to be the villain. It will be great to see a villain that has never been done before on film, and if Bane was in it, thrilling to see a character who has already been done in a batman film, but interpreted differently and by no doubt better. Also it would be great to see Scarecrow come back, would be great to have him in all three movies, I wanna see what will happen to him actually, after the intro of TDK.

  4. I’d love to see Dr Strange in B3, but yeah this is pure rumour, sure possibly based on maybe “reliable” insider info, but what’s “reliable” really? One small “reliable” seed planted on the ‘net and it grows like a tree in Poison Ivy’s backyard… yeeesh. We all get worked up when a new Batman villain is in the works – so let’s all take a step back and wait for an official announcement.

    • Wheres the fun in that I say keep it up we’ve gotta fill the void somehow ;)

  5. Without taking this as anything but unsubstantiated rumor, the prospect is at least more interesting than most speculation that’s been bantered about so far, and being that the psychological aspect is highlighted in the character, it also seems he would fit Nolan’s strengths like hand-in-glove.

  6. dKnight007, you’re not “confused”, you’re simply being dishonest.

I’m not “worried” about that site or its reporting, what I don’t like is fan sites that mislead fans and/or people with low character who pretend to be “sources” to lie to fans.

The fact is that mere hours before that story ran, myself and a few other people (including by the way some who personally know Chris, the guy who wrote that story) spoke about this theory, and shared information and links about it. I know the origins of the story because I was there when the theory came up and was passed around, and I know at least some of the folks involved in telling others about it (most of who were honest and not trying to falsely promote it as inside information).

I’m not “worried” or any other silly, childish little thing you want to say. I’m just very displeased that dishonest fanboys took speculation and shared discussions among friends and fans, and went off pretending to be a source and supplying it to a site that promoted it in this manner. It’s unfair to fans when fake sources promote false claims on sites that promote those claims and try to clearly give the impression the source has some valid access to insider info when the source in fact is merely a member of two specific fan sites and lurks/trolls for info to then pass along to make themselves seem important.

Fans get angry about fake news and dishonest “leaks” etc all the time — why would you be so intent on trying to defend this one, when it hurts all fans for this kind of bad behavior to go on?

  7. big D — I understand what you’re saying, that rumors and speculation are part of the fun and fill the void while we await information. But there’s a difference between rumor and FAKE stories, and people pretending to be “sources” — and sites that clearly try to imply the source has some access to inside information — are wrong for that kind of behavior.

Now, personally I obviously DO think Strange is in the film, which is partly why a few hours before that story ran I was telling some friends and fans about my theory and the link to Millar’s interview. But it’s only a theory, it’s only rumor, and if I and others are right about it then it’s not because we have access to inside info or are smarter or anything like that — we just happened to guess right, that’s all, and it will be luck and the info and clues and theories are all very slim and coincidental etc. Many of us started promoting Strange more than a year ago just out of personal preference, and later said we suspected he’s on the short-list of villains just based on hunches and gut etc. It’s not science, it’s fan speculation and nothing else.

Think about this for a moment, folks — some source is accurate enough and connected enough to get the info about Strange, about the Riddler, and about those actresses, but Nolan and WB have no idea who this source is and can’t get rid of him/her before s/he leaks more info? This is assuming the source did in fact pass on accurate info about those things, since so far I’ve not seen any evidence of that beyond the site claiming the source knew those things. But if they did, maybe it’s because in both of those cases two sites — BOF and SHH — had certain fans strongly speculating those things as well. The same two sites where the Strange rumor was spread among fans, too. Hmm…

  8. Personally, I have found that if you keep your eye on the school of red herrings and then strike with intuition, a steady aim with repeated direct points then likely all those illusory herrings and half-herrings dissipate and the meat of the matter will be what your points stick to…

No use in denying or running away from the feed back being provided here huh?

  9. Hello, first of all the article was very well written. Despite the writer stating a couple of times that this is based on a reliable source’s rumour, it delves deep into the possible part the character of Hugo Strange in the upcoming B3. I for one am a big Nolan fan, and would love to see how this villain will be portrayed especially after agreeing that Nolan will surely be heavy on the psyche-part for this character, after seeing his latest mind-boggling yet wonderful and awesome movie, Inception.

Btw, I would just like to take note on the (possible error?) on one of the lines on one of the last few paragraphs.

“I would love to ** him and Christian Bale throw down in their respective Batman outfits.”

uhm.. don’t you think there is a missing word on this sentence? please do correct me if I’m wrong. Though not a professional on this matter or something, i sometimes have a knack for spotting errors, then again i may have watched too much mind-boggling Nolan movies recently. lol

    • It was missing the word “see” – I added it in there.

Thanks for spotting the error ;-)

  10. I believe it should be harvey bullock. its weird, it could be bullock or hugo strange, the story prey has alot to do with both, i can’t wait to find out who it will be. i think the story line would fit better being Bullock honestly

  11. Any idea when we’ll find out who it will be?!

  12. Bronson is one of my favorite movies, and I even named my dog after the character, because I thought Hardy did such a fantastic job. This man can play crazy in every aspect (Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights!), and obviously has the ability to look like the character. Also, his voice is menacing yet likable. If he doesn’t get the part, I’ll be really disappointed.

  13. Speaking of Hugo Strange hes going to be in the next Batman Game Arkham City.

  14. Bane would be a pretty sweet villan for a final batman movie

  15. Tom Hardy is an excellent actor, but my vote for Hugo Strange’s part goes to Robert Englund.

  16. mark mark mark……. i agree! you truly are a fan, but please “STOP”…saying “fanboy” as a reference to us, … and loyal, comic nerds! ha ha ha ahh hah ha ha ha!

Nerds :)… its what we are. Isn’t it?

so to the point! mark is right to “not speculate, Via rumor”! but who can honesty hold their excitement! This is B3 We are talking about!

it’s been announced that Hardy is playing Bane, and Hathaway is catwoman!

    …..??????!!!!!”””””SURPRISE MOTHERF&(#ERS!:p :p :p :p

i KNOW I KNOW… you all like the sewing circle, that you’ve stitched around your theory’s of what to expect! I would too!…. BUT!

I BELIEVE IN NOLAN!… To deliver a unexpected, yet true to story!…ending that is deserving only to, THE ONE, THE ONLY, SUPER STAR OF ALL HERO’S….. BATMAN!

PS.. w/o Srange,… there is no bane!

  18. Thanks for any other informative website. Where else may just I
am getting that type of information written in such an ideal
means? I have a challenge that I am just now working on, and
I have been at the look out for such information.
