Toy Story 3Toy Story 3 is an animated sequel that I think pretty much everyone is anticipating (if you’re not, you’re dead inside…). The first one is my personal favorite, but on a purely technical animation level, the second is superior. It’s really the only Pixar story that warranted a sequel, simply because the characters are so great – likable, funny, charming, iconic and re-watchable. Seeing them in more films can only be a good thing.

Rumors went around for a while about a possible Toy Story 3 until it was officially announced, and with a little bit over a year away from its release date, it seems like things are moving pretty fast.

In a recent interview with Empire, Tom Hanks gave an update on the status of Toy Story 3 – specifically on his involvement so far. Here’s what he had to say:

“I have been in and done three big complete recording sessions and will probably have at least one more to do, possibly in about eight months. Then eight months after that I’ll do a mop-up and have three more sessions after that. Those movies are beasts.”

Hanks went on to give some pretty surprising and pretty neat info on what he (as well as Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger) has seen of the film’s development so far – it’s more than you might think… way more:

“They did an interesting thing on this one. They did not send us a script. They showed us a complete story reel of the entire movie, with storyboards moving from one to the next, and the people up at Pixar recorded some voices with some music and sound effects. Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger and I went in a movie theater, watched the reel and said, ‘This is great, let’s get to work!’”

Wow.

I’ve never heard of storyboards being presented as film in itself: CGI animatics combined with visual effects, music and dialog. They didn’t see a script but rather got to sit down and watch the entire movie in animated storyboard format?

Oh those lucky, lucky Hollywood people!

So clearly the folks at Pixar have a firm grasp on what they want to do with Toy Story 3 (as I believe they do with every film). The guys over there are the absolute best at what they do, and for that to be possible and remain the case, they have to be on the ball before the rest of us even know there is a ball. For example, I believe when Ratatouille was still in development, they had already started working on WALL-E… that’s how prepared they are as a studio.

The first two Toy Story movies are a couple of the most well received (both critically and by movie goers) animated movies ever made. They both hold 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes – and adding to that the fact that combined they have made almost $850 million worldwide made another movie being added to the series almost inevitable.

This was the concept that introduced us all to the wonders of Pixar’s animation, and I have no doubt the third film will just be another piece of animation excellence to add to the list.

What are your thoughts on them making a third movie? Should they leave well enough alone or add to the adventures of Woody and Buzz?

Toy Story 3 is currently scheduled for a June 18th, 2010 release.

  1. cant wait for this

  2. I’ve never seen them, don’t know why. I think I missed them when they were out and never got around to seeing them. I’ll have to rent 1 and 2 some day…

  3. Really? I’m dead inside for not anticipating Toy Story 3? I guess I have a lot to learn about good cinema, like enjoying movies aimed at 5 year old audiences!

  4. Hey smartass, animated movies are aimed toward the whole family, I love animated movies… Oh, hey, your name is smartass also, I was just calling you that… :-P

  5. First time i saw the first and second movie i’m going to admit it but i saw the bootleg versions. Not entirely my fault though… But i was living in another country and bootlegs were the only version that were shown in the theaters. Since i was living there… I did not think i’d come back here to the states…so yeah saw several movies there like that. Being the movie lover that i was and still am… I’m sorry but i wasn’t going to miss out on movies because of right and wrong. So i ask screenrant and everyone else… What would they have done in my situation…? Would you have still gone to the theaters or would you have waited to see if you would ever have the chance to go back to the U.S to then start a new and watch non bkotleg movies…?

  6. I personally don’t like them that much (Toy Story), but I agree they are pretty good, so I think I’ll be watching this one.

  7. I don’t support these lame kid cartoons ?

Dead inside? That’s your opinion. I feel the same way when I see mindless hordes of zombie like consumers flock like seagulls to these mindless films.

Who’s really dead inside Ross? :-P

  8. Toy Story is anything but mindless.

And as for you, “SmartAss”, do you really think a movie has to have a rating of at least higher than PG to be good? Do you think blood, guts, and strong language are what make a good story? No, though they can enrich them. So can rich characters and charm, two things both Toy Story films have.

  9. Yah, if only they had gold loving aliens and 40 minute car chases that lead nowhere in them, then they wouldn’t be so mindless… :-D

  10. Can’t wait! All I want now is a Incredibles 2! Toy Story and Incredibles are my two fav Pixar franchises.

  11. Films like Toy Story and Up, and basically all the Pixar stuff, is mindless to me.

Alot of people like it and hey you know what a lot of people like American Idol too,,, :-)

I just don’t support those films.

  12. Yah, American Idol, har har har, well, I don’t really watch that, but ok. I wonder what level of show or movie Terminator 3, The Spirit, or Battlefield Earth equates to? I don’t know but I bet Paris Hilton is in it… :-P

  13. You remind me of a spite full x-girlfriend Ken J you just can’t let some things go…

Your hatred for T3 is hilarious, bordering on obsessive.

Go ahead and defend Toy Story,,, a film you admittedly haven’t even seen,

    Go girlfriend,,, :-)

  14. I will definitly watch it!

  15. EnglishGavz, that’s totally cool, thanks for not personally attacking me for having an opposite opinion. I hope you enjoy the film. :-)

It sucks when you have one or two people get off on attacking commenters because they have attention needs that they don’t get fulfilled in the real world…

My basis for even commenting on this thread was Ross’s statement that I didn’t have a heart because I don’t have a warm fuzzy place in my soul for Toy Story 3,,, that’s really a pretty biased statement that I felt deserved a reply.
I wasn’t attacking anyone else here, and my statement on American Idol is a fact. Check the ratings… :-P

Just wanted to clear that up,,, Ross, what makes you say that I don’t have a heart ? I’d like to hear some reasoning behind that one. :-)

  16. LOL 790, there you go again, not recognizing that you had that coming to you. Just like the other time you got pissed at me, lol. I personally can fully understand if something simply isn’t your thing and you have no interest in it. I disagree with the “you’re dead inside” comment. But after you compared people who like animated movies to American Idol watchers and how you’re saying that they are “mindless,” thus people who watch it are “mindless.” Yah, I’m sure you didn’t just personally attack a bunch of people all at once. Oh no, innocent you meant no such malice in your comment, lol. At least I personally attack one person, thus fitting the term personally, lol. :-P

Oh man, and it really gets to you too, that’s the thing, man… :-D If you keep doing that I won’t be able to hold myself back dude. Just know that I am just messing with you man.

But anywho, I personally like a lot of animated movies because they don’t rely on gimmicks to sell their story. No need for excessive violence, gore, nudity, harsh language, DRAWN OUT CAR CHASES, or any of these things. Just a well thought out story carried by colorful characters with strong character developments.

  17. Justify your existence anyway you want. Like most drama queens I’m going to let you have the last comeback, cause I could really continue to chip away at you all day long but I have more respect for Vic and SR…

    Your pretty pathetic ken.

  18. I have complete faith in Pixar in continuing Toy Story for another movie, but I think for integrity sake, they had better stop on the third. I look forward to this as well. My kids grew up on these and we use little dialog from it all the time.

  19. Rofl

Pixar usually has some pretty cool/morbid sociological and psychological outlooks on human condition in their films ( A Bugs Life, The Incredibles, WALL-E, and yes, Toy Story ).

This Synecdoche, New York fan will be seeing it =)

  20. Hey guys, just to clarify – my “dead inside” comment was meant to be “wink wink” sarcasm, not actually being deadly serious.

I guess text on the net isn’t suited very much to conveying sarcasm…

    And @SmartAss,

You think Pixar’s movies are aimed at 5 year olds? Did you watch another set of movies pretending to be Pixar’s work? They make animated movies that are for the whole family – sure there’s stuff that the kids will enjoy more than the adults, but there’s plenty in there for the parents and others to enjoy, too. Not all animated movies are for kids, you know.

  21. I will definitely be seeing this film, as I thought the first 2 were examples of great story telling and wonderful animation. Much like Shrek, the voice actors were picked perfectly for the characters.

Also, I have to agree with Whoaly, Incredibles 2 needs to be done!!

  22. This annoys me. How can you still have slinky without Jim Varney???? They should have taken him out of the movie. I will see it as I saw the last 2 in theater, but that will piss me off and possibly ruin it for me as he was always one of my favs.

  23. We’ll see. The first one didn’t look like it needed a sequel but got one just as good. Can they equal the second movie? I don’t know.

I think they are well made movies with strong stories. I’ve seen most of the pixar movies and I have to admit that by the time Ratatouille came out, Pixar stories started to become a bit predictable (haven’t seen wall-e).

  24. @vid
I agree that Ratatouille was predictable, which was disappointing for me as it had great character at the beginning but failed to deliver an ending with same quality as the start. Wall-E was also predictable at points, but it’s nice that Pixar seems to returning to its original, and some times wacky, but enjoyable type of films, i.e. Up.

Also with the whole discussion between 790 and Ken J, I’d have to agree completely with Ken J

  25. @ Ross, yah, I kind of figured you were joking, thus why I didn’t really comment on the “you’re dead inside” comment from the beginning. I recognize it from the Watchmen thread and figured you were just poking fun at that. But some people took it seriously, and I do disagree with the assumption that people HAVE to be interested in so-and-so, but still couldn’t resist poking fun at someone named “smartass” and then 790 after he insulted fans of animated movies. Plus, his reaction to me goofing around is usually pretty hilarious. So I can’t help myself. :-D

  26. @ Sock, I enjoyed Ratatouille though. Although I didn’t really find it predictable because I wasn’t really thinking about how it would end, I was just watching it. The only times I actually sit there and think “hm, I wonder how this will end” and try to predict it are usually more serious movies or movies that looks like they are trying to trip you up with twists. Those movies COULD be good, but they could really suck if those twists are predictable. But I didn’t really find myself doing that during Ratatouille so I guess I’m not even too sure if it was predictable for me or not.

I also didn’t really enjoy Wall-E but for other reasons. I guess you can say it was predictable, you know they will have the happy ending, they go to earth and fix it blah blah blah, but I disliked it for its blatant social messages and also because of what annoyed Vic so much. Why the heck did they go back and forth between CG and real people???

  27. lol Ken J. Why do people have to be so mean to us when we try to defend other people?

  28. I find your comments amusing as well Kim J, like that little korean dictator. You always make me laugh with your little tough guy comments and your love for weapons and insults. Go girl,,,!!!

    (Sarcasim alert)

Ross thanks for clearing that up, :-)

    (Sarcasim) alert

Personally Ross, (I’m not talking to anyone else here) I disagree with your point of view on Toy Story. I’m know for sure that others agree that Pixar kick ars and Toy story is not only brillaint cinema its enjoyed throughout the known universe, but hey I’m not talking to you…

    Thanks Ross, got your reply.

    Ghesshuss.

  29. lol 790, you just keep egging him on huh? then when he insults you, you cry. Im amazed you didnt get it was a joke to begin with. But then you go and say the people who like the films are mindless lol Arent you also insulting people?
